These efforts have been accomplished only through the indispensable and unceasing assistance of our Senior Class advisor, Mr. Morris Perman, and members of the Yearbook Staff. It is our sincere wish that, through years of success and happiness to come, this book remain as the principal means of perpetuating those memories of friendships and pleasures gathered by the Senior Class of june 1945. One year was spent i11 Concord, Massachusetts, where he was an instructor of the Classics and Mathematics at the Concord School. On September 1, 1898. Dr. Chickering came to jamaica and joined the faculty of the Jamaica High School. There were at that time only 200 high school pupils, whereas in 1937 the school had grown to the point where it had a register of about 10,000-an amazing change in less than 50 years. Of course, in the old days, there were many more opportunities for closer contactlwith the pupils than there are now, but Dr. Chickering has never changed his attitude in the classroom-whether there are 15 or 50 in the class he is each pupil's personal friend. lVhen one is eager for increased knowledge and broadening he is never satisfied to sit by and take the easy road. Dr. Chickering studied for the First Assistant's examination and in 1907 was granted the license and became Head of the Department of Classical Languages. Four years later, he was awarded his degree of Doctor of Philosophy from Columbia University. His Thesis for the Doctorate, 'fOctavia Practextaf' was published in 19113 a textbook, f'First Latin Reader, in 19125 and two years later Beginner's Latin by the Direct Method. Dr. Chickering was a pioneer in the Direct Method field. During the summer sessions of 1915, 1917 and 1919 he was a Professor of Latin at Teacher's College, Columbia University. From 1922 to 1927 he was teacher in charge of the Annex which was held in P. S. 50, jamaica. For a number of years Dr. Chickering was coach of the Jamaica High School Baseball Team - which assignment he considered a delightful recrea- tion and another opportunity for teacher-pupil contact. And speaking of recreation-he has always been an ardent and skillful golfer, he enjoys swimming and diving, and unless you play bridge very well there is really no point in playing with him - unless you don't mind losing. livery well-rounded person has a hobby and Dr. Chickering's is philatelyg his collection of United States stamps is a very representative one and he derives many hours of joy from his philatelic investigations. Dr. Chickering is a member of some of the outstanding societies in this country, Sigma Phi National Fraternityg Phi Beta Kappa, the Scholastic Honors Fraternity: the American Philological Association: the Society of Colonial lVars: and the Society of Mayflower Descendants, through his descent from James Chilton on his mother's side and 1Villiam YVhite on his father's side. Now. as we say gooilbye to Dr. Chickering. who is being graduated with our class, we salute him as a charming gentleman, a learned scholar and a real friend. 145 5
