While there are many factors which bring about this change-home environment, religious associations, contact with one another - I like to feel that our training and the association with teachers and pupils in this school have contrib' uted largely to this change. We send you out with a diploma as a symbol that you have met our standards and we are proud to enroll you as a graduate of this school. I don't know what all of you are planning after grad' uation. A good many will enroll in college, others will begin looking for jobs. I think that for those seeking employment, there is a decided improvement in conditions. I have more inquiries from employers than I have had in years. Of course, the defense program is largely responsible for this and as more young men of the draft age are called, the opportunities of employment will steadily increase. I feel encouraged that a place will be found for everyone. Even though you are no longer enrolled as students in Jamaica High School, I want you to feel that we are still interested in you and anxious to help you establish yourself. My sincere congratulations and may you have the best of luck. Sincerely your friend, CHARLES H. VosBuRGH, Principal, famaica High School. WIELAND ALAN DUGAN Foreword We have tried to make this Senior Year Book, as representative of jamaica as possible, in that it is our last effort in this school. We trust it will be a pleasant reminder, in years to come, of the four years spent at jamaica. May it serve to bring back memories of the friendships and assof ciations so shortly to be broken in many instances. We take this opportunity to express our gratitude and thanks to Mr. Morris Perman, the Year Book sponsor and to the staff members who have contributed in the production -of this book. In closing, we wish our fellow graduates success, happiness and good luck. SCVCD Class Sponsors l To the Graduates of january 1941: desire. Now it is your responsibility to make the most of your training Upportunities which have not been present for many years are avail ahle for those who are conscientious and willing to try. I wish that each of you may have the success and happiness you Sincerely, MADELINE F. Haaals, Senior Class Sponsm .v-s, 'QQ MISS ELLEN ACTON MR. MORRIS PERMAN MR. ALBERT L. MORRISON Grade Advisers MISS ELLEN ACTON is rounding out her thirteenth year of teaching at Jamaica High School unafraid of the old superstition, for she said, 'iThis is my lucky year . Miss Acton got her B. A degree in Hunter College and immedif ately launched upon her career as an English teacher. She taught for a year at Evander Childs High School heforc coming to Jamaica in 1928. Miss Acton has long had an interest in student extrafcurricular activities. She is also interested in the writing end of literature, par' ticularly in poetry. These interests have heen comhined when Miss Acton hecame sponsor of the Poetry Cluh and founder of the Scrih' hlers' Cluh. THE SENIOR CLASS has many reasons to thank Mr. Morris Perman, Commercial teacher. In the capacity of Senior Class Adviser, he has many responsibilities. He selects the Editors of the Senior Year Book and supervises the editing and puhlishing of the hook. He acts as a hanker, holding the funds of the Senior class, and arranges for the selection of the class jewelry. After graduation from New York University, Mr, Perman taught at Alexander Hamilton High School. He then came to jamaica High School where he has remained for the last eleven years. Mr. Perman's school day is a full one, for hesides teaching in day school and acting as Senior Class Adviser he also teaches at night school. Mr. Perman's hohhies are handhall and howling, which provide a relaxation from the mental work of the day. It is entirely unnecessary to state that the Senior class is deeply grateful for the work done on its hehalf hy Mr. Perinan. MR. ALBERT L. MORRISON has heen a Grade Adviser for the class of January '41 for the four years it has heen in jamaica High. In the Commercial Department, Mr. Morrison teaches Accounting and Business Training hy day and hy night helps run the Evening School. His calendar is extremely full, for hesides his teaching duties, he is a Grade Adviser and devotes much of his time to heing Diseiplinf arian, which he justifiahly terms a thankless john. G A Columhia graduate, Mr. Morrison, has heen teaching at jamaica for the last nine years. The Senior class owes a great deal to Mr. Morrison for his untirf ing efforts on their hehalf. His advice as Grade Adviser has helped many to graduate on time with the correct credits for college or husif ness. And so for his advice and help, we, the graduates, extend our thanks to Mr. Morrison. I nine MR. ROSCOE GRANT tell MISS MABEL L. BERNARD Grey haired, benevolent Miss Mabel L. Bernard has presided over room 163 as girls' dean for over twelve years. Previous to obtaining this position, Miss Bernard for nine years, in both the old and new buildings taught history and algebra, has been a grade adviser and even was a boys' enrolling room teacher. This last one, incidenf tally, was the experience that she enjoyed most. She stated that the only thing she misses as girls' dean is not having a crowd of boys visit her office. Not that she doesn't like her job as adviser to three thousand female students. She really does. MR. BENJAMIN THORPE If you have ever glanced inside the G. O. store, undoubtedly you have seen Mr. Thorpe seated before the vault. A teacher in jamaica High School for forty years, he has exercised his ability to the degree of grade adviser, Arista Senate member, G. O. treasurer, and English teacher, He hails from Flushing, and is a graduate of Hamilton Col' lege. He thinks J. H. S. is one of the finest schools in the city due to its countryflike appearance. He declared that the students consisted of favorable and unfavorable types, but in his pleasant manner he reconsidered, saying that most of them were earnest and sincere. Whether Jamaica students change their programs, fail three sub' jects or just graduate, Mr. Grant, the Administrative Assistant has a record of it. Mr. Grant grew up in Vermont. Graduation from Wes- leyan University was followed by a year's study in Berlin on a fellow' ship. His early ambition to teach was recognized at De Witt Clinton High School where he taught for seven years, and at Fitch University where he was Professor of Greek. His experience includes acting as principal of several small high schools in Vermont. He came to jamaica at the request of Mr, Mitchell, former principal, in 1912. His grand sense of humor has made him a favorite with Jamaica students and teachers alike. MR. ALBERT L. MORRISON jamaica's heartbreaker, Mr. Albert L. Morrison, has abandoned most of his Accounting and B. T. classes for the thankless position of Disciplinarian. He feels that since he is a married man with two children and had been a grade adviser for four years, he is well quali fied. After graduating from Columbia University he went into the business world for one year. He has now finished his ninth year at jamaica High School. To all those graduating, he wishes to state Do all that you are capable of, and you will be doing all that is ex pected of you . MR. TORD HOLMBERG Mr. Tord Holmberg is not only a teacher of physiography to you aspiring science students, but he also is in charge of absence and late ness and has previously held the office of Senior Class Sponsor in 1938 and has served as grade adviser. Before coming to J H S in 1930 he taught in elementary school for 7 years. A graduate of Manual Training H. S. and Maxwell Training School for Teachers he holds a B. S. degree in education and on M. A. from N. Y U He is mar ried, has one son and lives in Brooklyn but won't be quoted on the Dodgers' chances for next year. Nw A -,,.. BENJAMIN THORP came to Jamaica High School in the Fall of 1901 when jamaica High was situated on Hillside Avenue where the Vocational school is now. A resident of Flushing, Mr. Thorp came to Jamaica after graduating from Hamilton College. Mr. Thorp has been an English teacher for his entire career of forty years at Jamaica. He is active in extrafcurricular activities, for he has been a Senate member of Arista and has been a Grade Adviser. One of his most important positions has been that of Treasurer for the General Organization, After these many years of distinguished service to Jamaica, Mr. Thorp has decided to retire from active teaching. But we will carry away a pleasant memory of him for his genial philosophy and his worth to jamaica. Therefore, the Senior Class in passing, salutes Mr. Benjamin Thorp. K. Quia AFTER HAVING SEEN as many students pass through his classes as populate jamaica's main buildingfat one time, Mr. Henry I. Foley is ready to retire. Mr. Foley is a graduate of St. Frances College and taught at De La Salle Institute, New York, before coming to Jamaica in 1922. The tall, thin, distinguished looking Mr. Foley is a familiar figure around the halls of our building. He teaches typing and calculates that over 5,000 students have been converted by him from the Hunt and Peck system to something more substantial and useful. Mr. Foley was born in New Jersey and lives in jamaica. He has sent four sons and one daughter through jamaica High School, all of whom have distinguished themselves in this school. Mr. Foley is, by profession, a typing teacher, but his hobby is the study of economics, which he pursues with great diligence, He prefers to be called a 'igood sport and one of the boys . And so the Senior Class wishes luck and happiness to one of the boys as he begins his vacation. iwrlx' U MR. HENRY I. FOLEY .-SRS Kg F xnxx -. Af:-.u'x': 2 N 2. K A H 1 .. .I . V 1 . As we look back on this great chapter of our lives we are stirred with conflicting emotions. We think back upon our happy associations with our teachers and fellow students, and upon our accomplishments, such as they have been. We find that the casual acquaintances made as freshmen have ripened into vital friendships and hope they will continue to grow after graduation. It is hard to believe this chapter has come to an end, but let us hope that the next one will enfold as many pleasures as did this. WILLIAM GORDON, President of the Senior Class. Dear Fellow Students: At last it has come. The occasion for which we have worked and waited for four years has finally arrived. Graduation is no longer a distant dream, it is a challenging reality. But now that our goal has been reached, I am sure we all deeply regret that it has come so soon. However, the fond memories we have stored, the valuable experiences we have gained, and the lasting friendships that have become a part of us, I sincerely believe will better equip us for our entrance into the world. Regardless of what field of endeavor we enter, or where our occupations take us, we will always keep a warm spot in our hearts for the years we have spent at jamaica. And so, with all possible wishes for success and happiness in fu' ture years, I say goodbye. JEAN MARVIN, Vice'President of the Senior Class.
