Dedication to Dr. Chickering In grateful appreciation upon the completion of 40 years of service to Iamaica High School and its Seniors This term, Dr, Edward C. Chickering, distinguished head of the Classical Language Department of Jamaica High School, is completing his fortieth year as a teacher in jamaica High. Dr. Chickering was horn in New Hampshire, attended Phillips Academy, was graduated and entered the University of Vermont, which he attended for one year. There he won his Hrst prize in Latin which was prohahly the incentive which started him oil' on a career as a classical scholar and teacher. He received his B. A. and his M. A. degrees at Yale and Harvard Universities respectively. Before coming to jamaica High School in 1898 the Chairman of the Classical Department taught lviathematics, Latin, and Creek at a private school in Concord, Under his direction the Latin and Greek Department has grown with leaps and hounds, Largely through his efforts jamaica today boasts the largest Creek department in the New York City High Schools, Several memhers of the present faculty have heen students under him. His chief diversions are stamp collecting and golf. He is a devoted philatelist, having collected stamps since hc was a very young man, He also is a rahid sports fan. He played hoth foothall and hasehall while at college and during his first six years at jamaica High he guided the fortunes ofthe hasehall team. Among his many outside activities, he has written several hooks on Latin and Creek, has held the olhce of Vice- President of the N. Y. Classical Cluh, in which he is particularly active, and has received the degree of the Ph, D. at Columhia University. He has served in the capacity of college adviser for Senior hoys lor many years.
