TO THE GRADUATES OF JUNE, 1938 Dear Girls and Boys: As one who is somewhat prejudiced in its favor, I think Jamaica High School is an ideal place with which to be connected. There may be schools with higher scholarship, but there are none with finer types of girls and boys or a finer corps of teachers. If there is one quality which characterizes this school above all others, it is the happiness of its students. And this is as it should be. We want you to be happy. We want you to look back on your high school days as the happiest in your lives, days when you worked hard and played equally hard, days when you formed lasting friendships. You boys and girls have been cooperative and easy to manage. In these days when youth is apt to question authority, to be inconsid' erate of others, you have been easy to guide. I appreciate your attif tude. If you will allow an old friend to give you a last word of advice, let me urge you to cultivate a pleasing personality. You will find that there is one quality more important than the ability to make a favorable impression on the people you meet, whether they be friends, teachers or employers. A pleasant smile, good manners, careful speech, good posture and neat appearance rank equally high with ability. More jobs are lost by lack of personality than by lack of ability. If in the years to come you are ever in need of a word of advice, a friendly pat on the back, or a cheerful greeting, remember that my oiiice door will open to you as readily as it did when you were a stud' ent in this school, and that I shall be just as glad to see you. Grant, adniinistrativc Assistant of jamaica High School yet, within this quiet, spacious room, most of the strings of the Seniors' education are controlled. Littlcfpuhlicized, Mr. Grant is literally the hackfhone of all the Senior classes. Starting in the year 1912, he has made over fifty programs for the school and taken upon himself the task of looking over all prospective graduates' records. Born on a farm in Vermont, he went to an ancient little red school house for his primary etlucation. I . , . l , iireek and Latin, Coming hack to the United States, he hecarne principal of a couple of small high schools, taught at Fisk University lor three years, went to DeVv'itt Clinton for seven years, and then came to Jamaica. His adventures have heen varied and include a hike ride across England and Holland. Basehall, chess, and travel are his chief hohhies during his leisure. Most conspicuous of his personality traits, however, is his grand sense of humor.
