Chickering, distinguished head of the Classical Language Department of Jamaica High School, is completing his fortieth year as a teacher in jamaica High. Dr. Chickering was horn in New Hampshire, attended Phillips Academy, was graduated and entered the University of Vermont, which he attended for one year. There he won his Hrst prize in Latin which was prohahly the incentive which started him oil' on a career as a classical scholar and teacher. He received his B. A. and his M. A. degrees at Yale and Harvard Universities respectively. Before coming to jamaica High School in 1898 the Chairman of the Classical Department taught lviathematics, Latin, and Creek at a private school in Concord, Under his direction the Latin and Greek Department has grown with leaps and hounds, Largely through his efforts jamaica today boasts the largest Creek department in the New York City High Schools, Several memhers of the present faculty have heen students under him. His chief diversions are stamp collecting and golf. He is a devoted philatelist, having collected stamps since hc was a very young man, He also is a rahid sports fan. He played hoth foothall and hasehall while at college and during his first six years at jamaica High he guided the fortunes ofthe hasehall team. Among his many outside activities, he has written several hooks on Latin and Creek, has held the olhce of Vice- President of the N. Y. Classical Cluh, in which he is particularly active, and has received the degree of the Ph, D. at Columhia University. He has served in the capacity of college adviser for Senior hoys lor many years. Top, left to right WILLIAM SEATON ESTHER DOCTORVITZ REBECCA NAHMIAS Bottom, left to right HELEN SALTZ MARTIN MARKOWITZ FOREWORD Culminating six years of publication this, the twelfth issue of the Senior Year Book of Jamaica High School, has been compiled with the primary purpose of remaining, in the future years, as the principal means of perpetuating those memories of friendships and pleasures enjoyed by the Senior Class during their school career at jamaica. If our aim has been successful it is due to the indispensable and unceasing efforts of Mr. Harold A. Brown, Senior Class Adviser, and members of the Year Book Staff, who have given invaluable assistance. We present this year book to the senior class with the sincere hope that the reaching of their First major goal in life will be only a spur to further ambition and success. K J ff' af -f - v r ,Q 14 TO THE GRADUATES OF JUNE, 1938 Dear Girls and Boys: As one who is somewhat prejudiced in its favor, I think Jamaica High School is an ideal place with which to be connected. There may be schools with higher scholarship, but there are none with finer types of girls and boys or a finer corps of teachers. If there is one quality which characterizes this school above all others, it is the happiness of its students. And this is as it should be. We want you to be happy. We want you to look back on your high school days as the happiest in your lives, days when you worked hard and played equally hard, days when you formed lasting friendships. You boys and girls have been cooperative and easy to manage. In these days when youth is apt to question authority, to be inconsid' erate of others, you have been easy to guide. I appreciate your attif tude. If you will allow an old friend to give you a last word of advice, let me urge you to cultivate a pleasing personality. You will find that there is one quality more important than the ability to make a favorable impression on the people you meet, whether they be friends, teachers or employers. A pleasant smile, good manners, careful speech, good posture and neat appearance rank equally high with ability. More jobs are lost by lack of personality than by lack of ability. If in the years to come you are ever in need of a word of advice, a friendly pat on the back, or a cheerful greeting, remember that my oiiice door will open to you as readily as it did when you were a stud' ent in this school, and that I shall be just as glad to see you. I hope your lives will be full of happiness, hard work and success. Sincerely your friend, CHARLES H. VOSBURGH, Principal, jamaica High School. Roscoe A. Grant Very few students have crossed the threshold of that rcclfcarpcted sanctuary niarkccl 'llfvening School Olhceu the workshop of lwlr, Roscoe A. Grant, adniinistrativc Assistant of jamaica High School yet, within this quiet, spacious room, most of the strings of the Seniors' education are controlled. Littlcfpuhlicized, Mr. Grant is literally the hackfhone of all the Senior classes. Starting in the year 1912, he has made over fifty programs for the school and taken upon himself the task of looking over all prospective graduates' records. Born on a farm in Vermont, he went to an ancient little red school house for his primary etlucation. Alter gracluatiiw from Wt'sle 'an Universit f he won a icllowshiw to the Berlin Llniversit' and there studied is . 5 5. I . , . l , iireek and Latin, Coming hack to the United States, he hecarne principal of a couple of small high schools, taught at Fisk University lor three years, went to DeVv'itt Clinton for seven years, and then came to Jamaica. His adventures have heen varied and include a hike ride across England and Holland. Basehall, chess, and travel are his chief hohhies during his leisure. Most conspicuous of his personality traits, however, is his grand sense of humor. SENIOR CLASS OF JUNE, 1938 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Martin Wilkins ................................................ WILLIAM RYAN, Sponsor SENIOR ALWAYS seen with a book under his arm and a characteristic tongue in cheek attitude, Mr. William Rooney Ryan, English teacher, is known throughout the school as an expert on contemporary literature. Yet few of his friends know of his striking talent for making a home livable. His wife, also an English teacher at Jamaica, stated that at home, Bill's arrangement of flowers and furniture is always novel . Born in Manhattan, he is a typical New York sophisticate whose will' ingness to oblige and whose broadfminded opinions have caused ref peated requests by students to enter his classes. As proof of his gen' erous nature, Mr. Ryan is always willing to lend to both students and his faculty friends books from his quite extensive library. His idea of recreation in the summer is complete leisure while taking sunbaths. One of the richest personalities in the school, Mr. Ryan is famed for .his good taste in clothes, his worldly views, and his satirical humor. In teaching, his creed is: i'Teach the high school student independence, individuality, and tolerance, and he will be educated --a belief which is the very keynote of his own character. HAROLD A. BROWN, of the Classical Language Department was born in New jersey, but came to New York City at a very early age. After the usual course of instruction he came to jamaica High School in 1923 as a Latin teacher and has been adviser to the Senior Class since 1929. His main interest outside of school is his family which includes three lively little girls, A rabid golf fan, he also likes to putter around in his house and garden. He's had lots of experience with year books and seniors in his eight years as adviser. The first year book appeared in 1932, and although smaller, it had the same essential features as the year books of today. Although his work with the Seniors takes every free moment of his time and causes all sorts of headaches, Mr. Brown always manages to look calm and easyfgoing. If a caricature were to be drawn of this tall, wellfdressed, classical- looking teacher, it most certainly would depict him worrying over figures and seniors who don't do things as they're told . MR. HAROLD BROWN, Adviser . BORN in Boston, Mrs. Sophie Sorkin wouldn't live any other place ..., . V A f 5 1 LLM-- - .J ten MRS. SOPHIE SORKIN, Sponsor but in the heart of New York City . Determined at Hrst to be a teacher, she soon decided to concentrate on her own language first and after four energetic years at Hunter College, during which time she was active in dramatics, she emerged as a husky-voiced teacher of speech. Ranking high among her likes are the movies and theatre. Curiously enough, as proof of her contradictory nature she likes the sophisticates such as Katherine Cornell as well as Pluto in the silly symphonies. Best known for her grand sense of humor, Aunt Sophie once pretended a case of laryngitis for a period to get a class quiet. Coming straight to jamaica after college graduation, Mrs. Sorkin soon organized the Junior Dramatic club and is still sponsor of the group. Her success as a teacher is due in part to her creed of try to under' stand the difficulties of the student and appreciate their friendship . Endowed with reddish brown hair, expressive gray eyes and a warm smile, her sincerity and understanding nature are qualities which have enriched her personality to the fullest extent. ADVISERS SINCE she was born in New York City, it was only natural that Miss Ellen Acton should attend Hunter College-after deciding she wanted to become a teacher instead of a landscape artist. When Jamaica's present building was opened, Miss Acton, who had recently been grad- uated, became one of the regular staff. The thing that impressed me most then and still impresses me now is the spirit which pervades jamaica-that of friendliness and whole' someness--qualities in the students which have made it a great pleasure to act as adviser, she said. Truthfulness and sincerity are outstanding qualities of her character. This kind and friendly person advises that we be cheerful and couragf eous. She believes that we have a better chance for advancement and opportunity than had the graduates of a few terms ago. Though always a resident of our city, Miss Acton has by no means confined herself to staying in New York but has traveled extensively to many parts of the world, a pleasure she hopes we will all be able to .g h . ' ' J. f - . n tv iff fm: :. r 4 M, MISS ELLEN ACTON, Adviser I enjoy in the coming future MISS MABEI. BERNHARD, Dean of Girls g ff,li, : 'fl'-f 'Sf' 'V ff . Bur ima.. 94969-, MISS BERNHARD seems to be just about the busiest person in the school. Pass her office in the main hall at any time of the day and you'll always find a line outside waiting to see her. A ready smile and a quiet, gentle manner are always ready to greet you. Miss Bernhard came to Jamaica High School in 1919 as a history teacher. She says that history is her first love and she misses it greatly now. She graduated from Syracuse University, taught in various schools in New York and New jersey and was clean of a boarding school before coming here. She once taught trigonometry but, she says, she had to study very hard to keep ahead of the students. Housefplanning is one of her greatest interests outside of school. She studies magazines and books on this subject in her leisure time and some day hopes to make over the old homestead in a little town in New York State where she was born and which is still the family home. MR. TORD HOLMBERG, senior adviser and mentor of the physiogf raphy department, came to jamaica High School eight years ago, and thus is well able to give his opinion of the male populace of the school. Accoring to Mr. Holmberg, his boys, at least some of them, will in the near future be the leading citizens of New York City. We have some of the finest boys that Jamaica High has ever turned out. Mr. Holmberg received his secondary education at the Manual Train' ing High School, and then attended the Maxwell Training School for Teachers. Finally he received an appointment at a Brooklyn Elemen- tary School where he taught for seven years. Then he went to N. Y. U. and in 1930 entered the portals of jamaica High School. Travelling has occupied some of his time for he has travelled in Westerxi United States and also in South America. - And he still lives in Brooklyn. '-lv-rr-f --1 MR. F, MARTIN WILKIN President Wg Wea MARIE BROWN, VicefPresident z ll Fellow Graduates: It is with mingled emotions that we approach the end of our high school career. We are sad at the thought of having to leave the scene of our happiest days, then again we are glad because we have reached our first major goal-High School Commencement. As we reminisce a moment, we ind that we have formed everlastf ing friendships and have attained a greater educational background. I hope that your instruction in high school has helped you in four ways: that it has strengthened your will power, developed your ability to distinguish between right and wrong, sharpened your judg- ment, and created in you a deeper sense of responsibility. There is nothing that stands out in a person as much as his ability to give an honest, unbiased decision, one that is the result of his own thinking and not that of others. So now, as we are about to leave high school and step out into the world, let us all try to remember to be a little more in the giving business and a little less in the taking business . , Sincerely, F. MARTIN WILKINS, Pres. of Senior Class, june, 1938. y Dear School Friends, How suddenly does the realization come that one great eventful chapter of our lives is at an end. We can only hope that the next will begin and end as happily as did this one. Side by side for four short years we have walked through these alls of jamaica High with our friendships growing stronger and more vital to each and everyone of us. We entered these doors as children and strangers. We grew up together amid happiness, sorrow, victories, and losses. We leave these doors instilled with a prayer-our bond in lasting friendship dedicated to the love and loyalty of Jamaica High. THE CLASS HISTORY ERA ONE ITH their eyes almost popping out of their heads, and their faces twitching with curiosity, some one thousand five hundred freshies entered the portals of one Jamaica High School. After several months at Jamaica, it was evident that they had gained some knowledge. Martin Mar' kowitz discovered, after standing in front of the school clocks two hours every day for seven months, that they don't work. Hewitt Gurnee found out that the fountain in the park did not get its water from the Goose Pond, and in addition it was free of charge. After studying for approximately three weeks, some fifteen hundred freshman discovered that they didn't have to take regents. And with these startling discoveries, 950 educated freshies turned Full Fledged Sophomores. ERA TWO R HREE years to go. We make it or bust, was the battle cry of the undaunted nine hundred. One Bill Roeder decided that he wanted to know where the detention hall was situated, and after wandering around the halls for several days he was finally given a detention for unnecessary loitering in the corridors. ' Walter Appleton and Charles Devine had a terrific urge to learn how to row, and since the only lake in the vicinity was the Goose Pond , they started their venture on it. The next day Walter Appleton and Charles Devine were absent from school, The second day both sailors returned, more adhesive tape than flesh showing. Q And five months flew by. Some nine hundred freshies minus fifty snubbed up their noses, for now they were juniors. ERA THREE AVING finished one half of his school career, in a normal and same manner, Larry Hamsley suddenly decided to become a sharpie . As the next step in his development, the aforementioned Mr. Ham' sley decided he must have a flute. He compromised with a tin whistle. The baseball team won the city championship and Joe Dooley was given a trip by the New York World Telegram with the Brooklyn Dodgers as the most valuable player. It was somewhat unusual, since Mr. Dooley was noted for his excellent pitching and not for crazy base running antics, while the Dodgers were known for crazy base running and not exceptionally fine pitching. Esther Doctorvitz squeezed into Arista with about 180 points. fOnly 85 above the minimumj. Bonnie Brown, Ken Kinnes, and Marty Wilkens became politicians and were elected to the student council. James Anderson began piling up the hundreds in his regents marks. Soon the teachers became wise and started to count his errors, thus giving him marks of zero instead of hundred. flt looked differentj. ERA FOUR N September, 1937, the class remains the only one in the school to have over one thousand members. By February this one thousand thinned out to eight hundred and fifty who are still striving to reach their goal, graduation. Bob Trimborn was elected VicefCommissioner of Police, and held his post for a weekfend, Some- body then found a few extra votes for Ken Robinson who took over his job on Monday. A disastrous performance of a quartet occured at the senior assembly. Lew Sutter's baritone sax was out of tuneg Bill Baker's trumpet was out of time, and Ed Avril's drums were just plain out , The other member of the quartet was the only one in . Many prominent seniors were seen at the Peace day strikes, at which a war was held and after which the speaker's clothes were in pieces, and they in the lake. The Junior Prom was, as usual, patronized by seniors who wished to practice for the Senior Prom. A strange incident occurred when Wally Appleton and Mr. Laherty walked in with a prize cup which the Hill' topper had won. Sixty couples crowded around the two, necessitating the discontinuance of the music fthere were no more dancers leftj. At the Arista dance quite a lot of comment was heard about the fact that there were no wallflowers . Another person remarked, With whom is Ken Robinson dancing? And then on graduation night, we, the largest class in the history of jamaica High School, having sucf cessfully beaten off the attempts of the Board of Regents to keep us in school for another term, did graduate. eighty'one SENIOR ESSAY -- FIRST PRIZE Adventures in Music By RUTH BLOCK You may know her-that girl next door, who, during the whole summer, drums away at that one Bach Prelude, make ing the same mistakes in the same places, time after time. You sometimes wonder why someone doesn't strangle her fper- haps she wonders, tool. It happens that she has heard that prelude performed with the most exquisite lightness, deftness and effortlessness. She will never play it like that, and she knows it, but for a long time she will try pretty hard. Why then does she continue in this apparently futile effort? What is there so intriguing in this vain pursuit? I call it vain and futile, and yet I wonder if it really is so. In struggling toward a goal, no matter how impossible that goal may be, is not the most ininitesimal bit of progress worth that struggle? Besides, she has tasted of the delight, the comfort, the companionship that music offersg she has found one friend she will never lose, one friend she will never forsake. Until three or four years ago, I had always supposed that I was quite fond of music, and indeed I was fond of it. I had heard it regularly all my life. My mother has always played the piano. My parents scarcely ever miss a broadcast of the major symphonic orchestras. Still, I had never really listened to most music in the sense of hearing and appreciating it. Of course I had my favorite pieces and there was some music which delighted me, but I Cannot say that I ever paid much attention to anything symphonic. I remember very clearly the sunny winter afternoon when I experienced my nrst adventure in music. It began quite inauspiciously. The warm, bright light was streaming over my shoulder, making queer shadow patterns on the floor from the rug. I was lazily, and without any show of concentration, trying to get my Math homework done. The radio was on, and if I had listened I might have heard the announcer say that the next number was to be the Romeo and Juliet over' ture by Tschaikowsky. I did not hear him say anything. I only know that I suddenly became conscious of the most ecstatic, most exquisite sound I had ever known. It is difficult to describe that feeling, when in thrilling oblivion, one is lost to all but the surging melody. I realize now that much depends upon the moment, upon the degree of sensitiveness of which one is capable at the time. I have since heard that overture many times, and I love it now and always shall, but still I do not think that I've ever heard it twice with the same sensations. So it was that I was inaugurated into the mysteries of symphony, and learned to listen to music whenever I could New doors were opened to me, new paths to follow, new discoveries to make. Some paths I have since forsaken, some I shall travel always, and others there are that I have not yet found. Brahms, the profound, the towering, the majestic-what end is there to learning and loving his music? Yet, was it not I QI recall it with shamej, who said to my mother of his Sec-ond Piano Concerto, Understand the Second? Why it's impossible. The First is at least clear and melodious, but the Second is unintelligiblen. Well, everything takes time, and the time came when I stood before the radio, rapt, lost in the intricacies of the second movements of that very concerto, amazed at its brilliance and power, at its intense bold flight, at its magnificence. Still, while understanding one part, I missed another. lt took many months more before I understood the calm beauty of the third movement. And how much this introduction to Brahms has meant to me! Chamber music which had never before appealed to me, now appeared enchanting. His symphonies were revealed to me in all their nobility and strength, their melodies interwoven with such craftsmanship, that now, for me, there is no surpassing Brahms. It has been the same with every piece of music I have come to love, and often now, when I do not understand a composition I think of it as a future happiness, as a mystery that only time and patience can solve. Music and memories are often so closely associated that it is hard to think of a favorite composition without having some incident or occurrence recalled to one's mind. For instance, whenever I think of the Chopin Fantaisie I remember King Richard the Second . Last year my mother studied the Fantaisie intensively, and on the morning that I left to see Richard the Second she was playing the buoyant, hopeful march that precedes the ilnale, I left the house, thinking of it, but I had forgotten it by the time we reached New York. I have never enjoyed any performance as much as I did Maurice Evans' King Richard . On the way home in the train, in that exhilarated mood that follows a pleasant experi' ence, I thought about the play. Suddenly I noticed that I was listening to the rhythmic turning of the wheels of the speed' ing train, beating out the exultant measure of the Fantaisie . Such feelings of enthusiasm and happiness are not soon forgotten. And adventures, indeed, are those few joyous occasions that I so eagerly anticipate:-concerts. I was taken to a concert, a piano recital, for the first time when I was about ten years old. It is rather strange that I should recall the trip, remember sitting' near the stage so that we could only see the pedalling, even remember the bronze plaque outside the build' ing, and yet the only composition played that I remember is the 'IRide of the Valkyrie . Its wild, dramatic sequences must have made a very strong impression on my childish mind. My reactions when I go to a concert now, however, are quite different. I am usually familiar with the music I hear, and I certainly carry away more lasting impressions. Naturally my enthusiasm is greater for some works than others, and I venture into different realms of music with different anticipationsg but the religious mysticism of Cesar Frank, the sometimes barbaric strength of Sibelius, and the flow' ing melodies of Rachmaninoff, though they are so different, all have equal beauty for me. As far as music goes, I am an amateur, I shall always be. However, the word amateur means not only novice , but also one who loves , and with this second meaning I am well content. - eighty'two SENIOR ESSAY -- SECOND PRIZE Security or Freedom By DORIS MERLIN Security is the goal, the safe harbor, the freedom from worry, for which men have striven since life was begun. It is the rock on which we in fancy, moor our destiny until death makes earthly security worthless. Freedom is the breaking away from orthodox forms of existence. It is the force that spurs us to leave the convenf tional highway of life and seek new fields to conquer. Men have fought and died in defense of this freedom and have cherished it as one of the greatest legacies given to them by God. A History's pages form a fascinating study of the desire of tribes and nations to win freedom and hold it securely. The spirit of freedom never dies. Truly the immortal lines of Byron have applied through the centuries: Hereditary bondsmanl Know ye not Who would be free themselves must strike the blow? We read of the tribes of Israel trekking from their bondage in the civilized Egypt to the vast wilderness, in order to be free. We read of the nerce struggle for Grecian liberty, the revolting of men against the bonds of feudalism, the fight against the stony darkness of the age of the French revolution. Then we read of our own. forefathers throwing off the yoke of the Old World with all the security it offered, to become a free, independent nation. To illustrate the point we might contrast the lives of brothers in a typical New England home in the infant years of our country. One remained at home and, under the watchful eyes of the vigilant soldiers armed with bayonets, tilled and reaped on the farm. He and friends of his type founded the factories which were to establish in security some New Eng' land town as a manufacturing center, The other brother saddled old Betsy and set out across the plains of the West. He tramped beside the prairie schooner, fought Indians and founded a new empire, the glorious West. The spirit of this brother, the spirit of freedom, discovered gold, He planted the first field of wheat which was to become, in later years, one of the chief industries of our country. Not so long ago the Lone Eagle soared aloft in the gray dimness of an early morning and through the ice and sleet challenged the swirling Atlantic and landed safely in Paris. His independent spirit and courageous manner gave to the world a mastery of the skies but, greater than this, a freedom from the earth. 1 Turning to Nature, we see the fledgling bird tended carefully by its mother until, at an early age, it is thrust ruth- lessly out into a world of space. After a few blundering efforts, it learns to Hy. It sails off gracefully into a world of free' dom, free to roam far from its secure nest and at liberty to settle where it pleases. I hope soon to leave the security of my school life. I want to become independent with the money I hope to make. I shall he free in the business world to forge ahead as did the warriors of old. But shall I be altogether free and unfet' tered? When I enter a position I shall be given a number. This is my social security number which guarantees me security in my old age, provided I pay a certain part of my salary weekly to the government, remain unmarried and live to a ripe old age, I can not seem to imagine the forceful Daniel Boone or Davy Crockett being given a number and assured of an old age pension. Personally I feel that freedom must be the goal if the world is to continue in its stride toward its millennium. I see dictators and laws of totalitarian states regulating political opposition and free thinking and I ask myself the questions, Are the arts and sciences, too, to be regimented along restricted avenues? VVill any young people ever reecho Patrick Henry's words, 'Give me liberty or give me deathl' This is a problem to be answered only by the youth of today and tomorrow. Which will he choose, security or freedom? Security is safety. Safety often kills initiative. When one is safe, there is little desire to explore unknown fields. Yet if the spirit of Columbus had been satisfied with the scientific data of his time, he would not have had the dar' ing to hurl his belief against the geographical laws set up by the learned men of his country. However, his active mind sought freedom from the accepted theory that the earth was flat and he declared our planet of a rounded Contour. He pleaded his cause for freedom of thought, and gave to the world a new continent. The Pilgrim fathers sought to break away from the old world's intolerance of religious beliefs other than those des' ignated by the rulers. Their spirit found freedom in the bleak, barren fastness of our New England coast. Their desire for freedom of religion was the beginning of a new and mighty nation. i America, even today offers opportunity and fame to those who will dare to break away from tradition and give new ideas to improve the republic, science, or medicine. Faced with the crisis of today, I feel sure that Young America , composed of the graduates of our high schools and colleges will rise' to the occasion and prove equal to the task of continuing the driving spirit of our ancestors. Moreover, freedom may mean security to many. The poor but ambitious immigrants' huddle together by the rail of the ship, eager to catch the first glimpse of the new country which they are entering. Unspoken questions fill the air. Will this new country offer to them a haven of security? Would this tedious, heartrrending voyage from their native land be justified when they are absorbed into the great United States? Their mute appeals to the heavens are answered when the Statue of Liberty is sighted. It is a symbol of the freedom of the country, standing there straight and strong amid the churning waters of the harbor. Yet to the minds of these men and women it conveys the blessed throught of security. Its arms and hands seem strong and kind enough to reach out and cradle the children of all nations protecting and defend' ing them for as long as they wish. These people then enter the country, strong in the conviction that the future is bright for them. They have freedom but with economic security. They have security but with spiritual freedom. Soon they and their children will intermingle with us. Their voices will rise joyously with ours in the national anthem. We, citizens of the United States, free and independent, secure and happy, facing a glorious golden future as free individuals in a free nation ring out the climax of the song together: For the land of the free and the home of the brave. eightyfthree East i11e111h 1251111112111 wp The Senior class of june, 1938, being of comparatively sound and disposing mind and memory, and considering the uncertainty of this lazy life, do make, publish and declare this to be our last and as follows, hereby revoking all other and former Vifills by us at anytime made.
