That they have been happy years, I feel sure, but whether they have been years profitably spent, only you and your experience in the years to come can determine. Judging by the success of the many graduates of this school who are filling positions of responsibility, I feel quite certain that you also will succeed. Your success, however, will depend not on what you have already accomplished but on your continued growth. The purpose of existence is growth. Life is dynamic, not static. It is ever moving forward, not standing still. For the past four years I have watched you grow in body and mind, in character and personality. These four years have been years of training and preparation for the growth which is to follow. If you are satisfied with the training you have received, you will become static. If you decide to build on the foundation which we have tried to give you, you will become dynamic and a -useful citizen in the community. The niche, after all, will be subjectively determined, and so be likely to conflict with conventional, external modes of thought. In such cases, what will be my guiding principle, you ask. I say there can be no general principleg each conflict must be settled on its own merits, after all factors have been weighed. Yet, in respect to each case, it would be well to bear in mind a simple truth: That it has always been the characteristic of society and the community implicitly to believe in and to fight for that which is old. An idea becomes sacrosanct with age, for the mass of society at least, and what is different and new be- comes sinful, odious, and blasphemous. Furthermore, it would be well to recall Epictetus' saying that men are made afraid not so much by things themselves as they are by their opinions of things, and then to recollect that opinions inculcated since childhood are no more than motor habits. To be objective, I must not allow my mind to fall into a rut, my thoughts to travel on a merry-go'round. No one group shall become my special interest, nor shall I ever delude myself into believing I travel in an elite circle-a mere camouflage of the truth that I've become narrow and have fallen into an unchangeable orbit of existence. Development is the highway that leads to completeness. Organs of the body lend themselves to development through exercise. So does the mind. It was of this fact that I had to convince myself when I first conceived of improving my position in life's parade. Although at that time, three or four years ago, I knew nothing of biology, psychology, or an' thropology, I did seem to recognize instinctively that the mass of nerves and cells called the brain was as capable of devel' opment as my biceps. I have tried conscientiously to expand my mind. Sometimes I slip, and at other times I seem to stagnate for long periods without advancing. Sometimes I temporarily lose sight of my goal, and get onto the wrong track. Within me has been developed, during the last year mainly, a terrible, burning, unquenchable desire to know, to know all and everything. Thus books enter the picture. Reading maketh a full man, it is said, and that is true. I would like ever so much to read every good book that was ever printed-yet I know I cannot. Life is short, moreover, a living has to be madc. There must also be a parallel road to knowledge and completeness. Friends, teachers! Yes, that is it. I conceive it of the greatest importance to cultivate friendships wih the right type of people of my own age, with teachers and older persons. Perhaps it is selhsh of me, yet it is true I interest myself only in people from whom I shall get something-new knowledge in any guise, whether it be a new way to play the harmonica, or a new slant on life. As I look back over my high school years, I see perhaps five or six teachers who stand out from the rest-landmarks, By these I was stimulated into fresh modes of thinking, given new concepts of life, made to understand the vitality of subjects I had, in ignorance, considered dull and dead. By these teachers, these landmarks, I have a way of reckoning development. Emerson truly said, Every man's progress is through a succession of teachers, each of which seems at the time to have a superlative influence . Development, however, is not alone a matter of external contacts. There are innate faculties which can be expanded only from within. No one can teach me how to understand art, or develop an appreciation of nature's beauty. These things must come through concentration, and long acquaintance. I have set: up my prospectus. I have resolved into its component parts my conception of living with myself . As my ideal, I have created the Complete Man. There is one further principle which I recognize: that growth of all things comes slowly. I do not expect to build myself into a rounded being in a year, or even in a dozen years. They were all there, kept clean in the dusty carton's tissue lined interiorg the playthings without which no child's life is complete. They were all there: the huge books of fairy tales whose profusely illustrated contents interested the mind not yet trained to readg the smug little leadfbased HumptyfDumpty, his green suit as bright as ever, who couldn't be tipped over: the beautiful, fatuously smiling doll with real hair, blue eyes, and lacy dress, with whom one was scarcely allowed to play, for fear she'd mussg the books of adventure on land and sea- tales of hardy pioneers and swashbuckling pirates, and innumerable variation on the theme Fair maiden and fearless heron: the rusty cap pistol that, beginning its career one memorable Fourth of july, had for many years been gripped alternately by sinister bank robbers and hard-riding, lariatftwirling cowhands. They were all there. Nothing was missing. My collection is not unique-it is duplicated in a thousand dusty boxes in a thousand attic corners-and in some spacious repository where the world keeps its outworn ideals. For the world and I have both been growing up. We've reached the same stage in our education. We began our thinking lives the same way-believing in the simply and beautifully expressed theories that were held out to us, and that gripped our budding imaginations, I poured over countless tales of folk and nature lore. I frol- icked with Robin Goodfellow through countless forest glensg I was an honored guest at Prince Charming's balls: there was a fairy who substituted a dime for a tooth hidden under the pillow. The world found its first interest in the Paganism that has come down to us in the ancient myths. This world could not ponder mysteries-it could only see Thor hurling his hammer at the vengeful giants of Iotunheim-Aphrodite appearing full grown from the waves-Jupiter supreme in cloud- wreathed Olympus. HumptyfDumpty was an early favorite of mine. Here was a fellow who, regardless of world conditions, was always right--and knew it. He was wonderful for instilling confidence-up to a point. Suddenly one grew tired of the monot' ony, tired of seeing him do the same thing over and over, and wanted a change. The world had its Humpty'Dumpty of tradition for a good while. At Erst it helped a good deal in this raw, new, uncertain system of things to have an old cus' tom that had always proven right, and would serve as a guide whenever a decision was uncertain. It was reassuring to have something to hold on to, But the world, one day, tired of making a fetish of tradition and realized that the traditions in a changing world must change also. Francine was a wonderful doll, with a wonderful capacity for being admired. This was fortunate since one rarely had a chance to do anything else to her. She was indeed much admired-but scarcely loved. Any rag doll who could be undressed, fed, put to bed, was better than this smiling emptyfhearted wretch. But I played with her one day and found her wonderful above all things-she was then a true favorite. For a long time the world kept its great Art and Literature in a showcase, like a fragile doll, where people could stop to admire it while they went on reading trash and appreciating art not at all. Then one day there was a change. Through cheap reprints of books, through magazines and libraries, people began to learn that literature was not eternal without reason, and that the best sellers ofthe ancient world were still good reading today. Great paintings were moved from private galleries to public museums and began to be appre- ciated. Stories of adventure fill a great need in the life of the average child. There comes a time when another day of school is not to be endured. Then must one seek the extraordinary--perhaps the impossible-to reawaken interest in life. Monotony in school can be endured when one rushes home to prowl the jungle with Mowgli and watch Bagheera pounce on his prey. Jules Verne with his fanciful inventions opens a whole world for exploration. So while a youthful mind was, through adventure stories, given new fields to roam, the world toyed with adventure itself. The old continent was growing stale and uninteresting-therefore it Sent Columbus to discover a new one. The results were more than gratifying. Man after man followed to seek riches, fame, the new life: and there was a new zest to the world's doings. There was always my temper to be controlled, always a time when a door had to be slammed to give vent to sup- pressed anger. These were the times when a wild game of Cops and Robbers was in order. The maddening dash up and down the block with cap pistols spitting bullets no less lethal because they were imaginary, left one dead-tired, but with a certain feeling of calmness. There were other tights too, when epithets were hurled like hand grenades, bursting at the feet of the foe and showering them with insults-and times when we fought for lack of something better to do. Temper has been one of the world's greatest burdens, and it has found an outlet for anger and desire, in much the same way. But the crackling of a cap pistol is drowned out by the shrieks of falling shells, the staccato rattle of machine gun fire, and drone of airplane motors. International namefcalling is one of the world's great vents for fury. Still, we are both learning to control our tempers and let the cap pistol and tank, for the most part, rust together. We've been making great strides and outgrowing the trappings of childhood. We've lost faith in fairies and Paganism, but they served their purpose. They awakened us to the possibilities of the world about us, and paved the way for a stronger faith to follow. We've learned self-confidence, but to a safe degree. We can see how Humpty-Dumpty works, and realize why he is infallible thou h we are not. We realize that we and the old ways are not perfect and that both must improve: that in progress lies perfection. We appreciate our great Art and Literature not merely because it is pretty to look at, but because it is great. We know now that it is the accumulated treasure of the ages, from which we must learn. We seldom seek refuge' in tales of adventure but those tales opened our minds to the possibilities of exploration. We go now from the possibilities that lie dormant in far lands to those secrets that are held in science and in the human mind. We are ferreting out the answers to the problems whose removal will better our living conditions. We've grown much more sober-we don't let loose at the slightest provocation. We've learned to think in most cases before acting, though unfortunately, in many cases, a major catastrophe provokes a major uprising. We've not quite learned the futility of fury, but we're becoming more and more educated to it every day. Yes, the world and I have almost finished our formal education. We're almost ready to begin living according to the rules we've been formulating and learning. We've spent good times at school, but I'm convinced that the old saw is wrongg the happiest days of our life are still ahead, . . sixtyfnine SENIOR YEAR BOOK SENIOR ESSAY -- FIRST HONORABLE MENTION Living With Myself MURIEL FRANKLIN As a child my thoughts and I were of another world -a world of fantasy, makefbelieve, pleasantry-a childhood paradise. Emerging gradually from the all encumbering stage between infancy and youth, I found myself engulfed in an overwhelming sea of adolescent idealism. But combatted by an insatiable desire for knowledge and a realization of conf ditions as they truly exist, this sea has been forced to recede. While wise ideals of the past have broadened into discerning philosophies for the future, their erroneous neighbors have begun to decay. As Charles Leland so loudly expounded: My Life will be lengthened while growing, for Thought is the measure of life. The environment of the baby, they say, is a colorless, meaningless vapor of feelingg or as William james expressed it in one of his inimitable phrases, a blooming, buzzing confusion . Having entered the bewildering realm of babydom, I too had to form a world out of the chaos. Barely had I time to clear up the confusion and climb out of my play-pen, when childhood was truly and terribly upon me. But the true and the terrible turned out to be the sweet and the gentle, for here certainly was a land of paradise. All was beautifulg all was real. Witches, elves, giants, and all the carefree creatures of my imagination took the same status as material things, like cookies, toys, dogs, people. The kit.en on the playroom wall was real, but so was the wet cat on the backyard fence. My little penny bank was real, but so was the cave of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. Equally real were Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Tom, Tom, the Piper's son, the Cow that jumped over the moon, and a rich variety of others. It has been truly said that in this golden age the lion of fact and the lamb of fancy lie down together . The tranquil hours of childhood were slipping fleetingly away. And with the thirst for knowledge came the closing of the gates of paradise forever. With more profound understanding came keen disillusion. Wider experience brought with it greater disappointment. Intense introspection wrought extreme confusion. Never before had I been caught in such a web of conflict. Perhaps the greatest source of disillusionment was in the field of music. What disapointment when, in approaching what I had anticipated as the delightful experience of making tunes come out of the piano, I was brought up against the astounding realization that taking music lessons didn't mean any such thing. On the contrary, it meant cramming my brain with all kinds of unfamiliar and quite meaningless facts about little dots and straight lines, that held no earthly inter- est for me. It meant cramping my fingers into painful positions and using them in unfamiliar ways until they ached. Little did I kow then the sweet repose, the quiet peace, which only music can bring. The seething desire, the excruciating torture, the supreme exultation, which the composer depicted-these were all dead to me. If I had only discovered, if someone had only told me, Beethoven might not have been merely a name on the outside of a selction, called Fur Elise . But the burning passion, the depth of despair, which the genius attempted to portray in this musical epistle of love, might have been known to me. A crescendo in the climax movement would not have meant merely loud, vacant tones, but would have taken on the fuller meaning of an emotional crescendo in Beethoven's life. What wide' eyed interest I should have shown if the dissonant chord had been likened to the lover's quarrel. Tears of sorrow would I have shed, if the lamentable and meditative theme of Massenet's Elegy had been revealed to me. If my teachers had realized their spiritual duty as musicians, as well as their technical duty as instructors, my appreciation and love of music might have been skilfully nurtured instead of lying dormant a.l these years. just recently I discovered what the ancient Greeks had meant when they said that music harmonizes the souls of those who pursue it and makes them kinder and more just in their relation to others. However, in our materialistic world we often pass by many beautiful things in a hurry. Music, to be beautiful, cannot be hurriedly passed by. It must be looked for, and once found, it must never be abandoned. One need never be lonesome if he can play or sing, for the joy and interest of creating beautiful sounds keeps all thoughts of loneliness away. Verdi's operas, Toscanini's wielding of the baton, Lily Pons' thrilling coloratura, Beethoven's etherial Fifth Symphony -these exalt life. Surrounded by so many influences, both good and bad, I find myself a bit dazed in trying to End out all that is right, all that is fine and worth attaining in a practical world. I do not seek that type of philosophy which may be found in textbooks. If I did, my wish would be easily satisfied. But I don't want a readyfmade, cutfandfdried, triedfandrtrue for- mula. Rather I prefer that theory which will best enable me to carry the virtues of truth, beauty, goodness, and justice to a point where they will no longer be considered trite ideals but will be perfected realities. I am willing to accept the world as it is, but I want to see the whole of things, the tendencies toward what the world may be in the future. I am willing to agree with facts, but still I can be discontented with them. I do not choose to criticize our way of life, yet I can do much to make mine fuller and more complete than my neighbor's. Essential, however, in the attainment of my ends will be outside help. For this, I shall go to the really great thinkers of the world. If I no longer End St. john and St. Paul among them, there is Plato, whose works have been called the Bible of the edu' cated. 'There are the great modems, Leibnitz and Spinoza, Locke and Berkely, If I dislike technical philosophy, there are the great philosophical poets and essayists, Dante and Goethe, Coleridge, Wordsworth, and Browning, Carlyle and Emerson, nearer still William james and Santayana. Childhood fantasy, adolescent idealism, mature philosophy-of these things have I tasted. Each, in its turn, has served to make life a little richer, a little more worth living. All in unison, have entrusted to me, the possessor of that life, an excellent foundation for selffbetterment and the betterment of the world.
