Riis High School The Jacob August Riis High School is the only junior vocational high school ex- clusively for boys in Los Angeles. Even though it lies in the southern area of the city, it attracts boys from all districts, some traveling as many as sixty miles a day to attend. The regular enrollment is five hundred, this year, however, five hundred and fifty were admitted. There are approximately four hundred on the waiting list. A boy's desire to go to Riis is easily understood. Here he finds a practical edu- cation. In a well-equipped shop he receives actual work-experience in his chosen ca- reer. Here he finds academic training suit- ed to his nccds. from the non-readers' Spe- cial Training Classes, remedial English and Mathematics, to private tutoring in basic subjects for entrance into reputable junior colleges and universities. Here he learns to love the history and traditions of America and California because of the manner in which these subjects are presented. Here he finds there is room for him in a variety of sports: football, basketball, baseball, track, gymnastics, and swimming. His health habits recieve careful considera- tion. Through enteresting devices, he dis- covers what type of highway courtesy he possesses. The customary routine of school work is relieved by weekly films, library visits and frequent trips to Los Angeles's many centers of interest: Plan- etarium, General Motors, Harbor, Animal Compound, etc. The faculty members a boy meets here are truly his friends, kindly, understand- ing, and ambitious for his improvment.
