The Tigers, trailing 3-0 following a 23-yard Danny Kemp field goal, put seven points on the boards with an eight-yard pass to split end Mahaffey and then took a 10-3 margin on a 41-yard field goal by Green. Jacksonvilleâs TD came on a one-yard sneak by Doc Lett with 0:52 left. Lett engineered a long drive to set up the score, but a gamble for two points and a victory was stoped short. 118 JACKSONVILLE 41, WESTERN CAROLINA 14 The Gamecocks, still rolling from their big win over Southeast Missouri, hit an excellent Western Carolina team with a barrage of big defensive plays and combined the effort with another top offensive performance to down the Catamounts 41-14 at Jacksonville. Boyce Callahan and Herby Wientjes, JSUâs crack pair of tailbacks, gained 78 and 58 yards respectively to pace the victory while Bobby Marcum caught a 29-yard TD pass from Doc Lett. Gary Godfrey, linebacker returned an interception 18 yards for the final points. Western Carolina could manage only 78 yards rushing in the game. SAMFORD 31, JACKSONVILLE 21 Samford hit Jacksonville with 21 quick points and used the burst as a lever for a 31-21 victory in a game played in a heavy down pour in the second half at Jacksonville. The Gamecocks snapped back for two second quarter TDâs to close the gap to 21-14 at halftime, but a 100-yard kickoff return by Samfordâs Emmett Lewis and the heavy downpour killed the Gamecocks' hopes in the second half. Jax quarterback Doc Lett, hit fullbacks Eddie Radford and Gordon Knowlton with a pair of long TD passes for the Gamecocks first pair of scores. 119 Eddie Radford-FB Gordon KnowltonâFB Randy Hurst-FB Bobby Marcum-WR Mike Munhall-WR Terry Owens-WR 120 Darrell Burlison-WR Gary Formby WR Roger Hibbs-WR Mike Hobson-WR Steve Cotney-WR 121 David WebsterâSE Bobby Germany-SE Ricky BrothersâSE Bruce NichobâT Henry Hobbs-T Wayne CarrollâT John Chancy-T Royce Collins-T Sam JohasonâT Ron Bcaucham-T George Porter-T Johnny Teague-T Gary Stedham-T Jimmy Martin-G Terry Collins-G 122 CHEERLEADERS 124 Linda Eisamen Gary Northrup Rhonda Hubbert Terry Earley Ricky Leach Jimmy Rogers 125 Mike CundiffâG Ralph PenningtonâG Mike CanadaâG Alan PascurâC Roy ShaddixâC Barney WilsonâC Mike Echols-C Sindo Mayer-C Gene Preskitt-E Ralph Murphy E Randall DeaversâE Rickey WeemsâLB Bill AbstonâLB JACKSONVILLE 31, DELTA STATE 14 Jacksonville State University held a potent Delta State offense at bay and used the running of Boyce Callahan and Herby Wientjes for a 31-14 victory over Delta State in the final home game of the year for the Gamecocks. The first half was a nip-and-tuck contest, but the Gamecocks hit the visitors with 17 points in the third period to break the game open. Hassell Wallsâ 37 yard return of a Delta punt for a TD iced the game, though Delta made a fine showing with a 100-yard kickoff return and an 83-yard punt return, both for scores. JACKSONVILLE 30, TENNESSEE MARTIN 10 Jacksonville's perfect homecoming record remained intact with a 30-10 HC victory over Tennessee Martin, a team rated to win the Gulf South Conference at the time. Boyce Callahan, with 100 yards rushing and two TDâs, Herby Wientjes, and Doc Lett combined their talents to pace the offense while the defense was superb, holding UTM to 123 yards rushing. The Gamecocks led 21-0 at halftime, and were never in danger in the second half. David Radford LB Ralph Clayton-LB Charlie Me Roberts LB De Cumbaa-LB JACKSONVILLE 60, FLORENCE 7 Florence State scored first, but it was to matter little as the Gamecocks came close to the all-time point production record of 67, with a 60-7 victory over Florence in a game played at Legion Field in Birmingham. The game was sponsored by the Kiwanis of Birmingham with proceeds going to their Drug Foundation Center. Bobby Marcum caught eight passes for 116 yards to set a new season record while a grand total of eight different figured in the scoring for the Gamecocks. Jax had 601 yards total offense in the game. 12S 4 Above Lett to Right: Scotty Marcum-LB Gary Godfrey-LB Buddy McCay LB Willie Robinson-LB Masse I Walls-DB Wayne Carden-DB Greg Parris- DB Ben Peters-DB TROY STATE 42, JACKSONVILLE 28 Troy State, for the first time in six years, changed its offense from the pro set to a multiple attack, and used the plan for a 42-28 win over the Gamecocks in a game that was decided in the final quarter of play. Troy scored 13 points in the final quarter for the victory. The big gainer was Troyâs best weapon against the Gamecocks. Quarterback Kenny McClain ran for 37 yards and one score; while running back Johnny Grimes weaved his way 38 yards for another. The Gamecocks fought back all night long and looked set to pull out another victory, but it wasnât in the cards. Bobby Marcum caught seven passes over 81 yards for the Gamecocksâ top effort. 129 JACKSONVILLE 57, S.E. MISSOURI 0 Jacksonville bounced back from the opening season loss in a grand manner, walloping Southeast Missouri, 57-0, for the biggest margin of victory in JSU history in a game played at Jacksonville. The Gamecocks scored with ease in the contest, taking a 37-0 lead at intermission. Herby Wientjes gained 120 yeard rushing to pace the Gamecocks while Don Lett threw for TD passes of 30 yards to Steve Cotney and 37 to Bobby Marcum. The Indians could only manage six first downs for the game. JACKSONVILLE 20, S.E. LOUISIANA 14 Boyce Callahan led an unbelievable comeback for the Gamecocks at Hammond, La., to give his teammates a 20-14 come-from-behind victory over Southeast Louisiana, a team which went 0-10 for the year. Trailing 14-7, the Gamecocks scored on a six-yard run by Callahan in the final three minutes, but a try for the two points by Callahan was stopped short. With the count 14-14, the Gamecocksâ hopes for a win were very slim. However, an onside kick by Danny Kemp was recovered by Lee Chaney and the Gamecocks were back in business. A few plays later found Callahan cracking over again for his third score and a 20-14 victory. Wayne Simmons DB 131 Coaching Staff: Charley Pell. Head Coach; Clarkie Mayfield. Jacksonvilleâs regular season mark was 29-3 overall and 17-2 in conference play, same as titlist Livingston. The South Alabama squad was awarded the crown on a rules interpretation. Gamecocks making all-conference were first baseman Eddie Isbell, outfielders Tommy Cason and Larry Foster, catcher Benny Bunn, infielder Charles Mansicalco. and pitcher Barney Wilson. Craig Edge was an all-conference player in 1970 and also nad a fine year in 1971. Cason led the nation in runs-batted-in while Foster finished second in homers with 13. Maniscako and Cason also finished in the top 10 in homers for NAIA schools. Foster, Cason, and Maniscako also dominated conference statistics in homers, runs-batted-in. and batting average. The Gamecocks averaged nine runs per game. Following the season. Cason was drafted by the Boston Red Sox and signed a professional contract with that club. 149 SPECIAL RECOGNITION 150 COACH TOM ROBERSON Coach Roberson enjoyed an 18 year career as head basketball coach and retired with a record of 262 wins and 159 loses. During these years between 1953-1971, he turned in Alabama Collegiate Conference Championships from 1965 through 1969 and his teams were A.C.C. tourney champions in 1960 and 1964. As a conference honor Roberson was voted Coach of the Year for 1966 and 1969. In 1969 the Birmingham Post-Herald elected him Coach of the Year for the state of Alabama. His teams have included eleven All-Conference Players in the past 10 seasons, several of whom made all-conference more than one season. Terry Owens made Little All-America in 1965 and Buddy Cornelius in 1968. Pro players from his teams include Terry Owens with the San Diego Chargers, David Robinson with Kansas Chiefs and Buddy Cornelius was signed by the Atlanta Hawks. On a tour to South Africa in 1968 Coach Tomâs team record was 11-0. Roberson coached players have been voted the top honors for a single individual award three times (MVP-Alabama Small College) in the Post-Herald pollâBill Brantley, Buddy Cornelius, and Wayne Wigley. In addition to this remarkable basketball record, Roberson has quite a record in football, having coached from 1952-1964 as assistant to Coach Don Sails. He coached offensive backs with teams that won ACC championships six straight years. The 1955 team went 10-1 and won the Refrigerator Bowl Game. In his final year as football coach, Jax won the ACC title, scoring 107 points while allowing 7 in conference play that year. Robersonâs best offensive team scored 99.7 points per game for 26 games in 1966-67 and his best defensive team allowed 58 points for 18 games. When all is said and done, the mark of a man is determined by his influence on young people with whom he associates. Coach Tomâs influence is reflected by a statement by one of his former football players, âIf I could have two fathers, I would want Coach Tom to be the other one. 151 TRACK TEAM Distance Men David Hodge Robert Walker Rick Player Stan Hodge Charles Martin Dave Newton Gary McBay, Trainer (Not Pictured) 152 Pole Vaulters Pictured above left: Rickey Samms Mike Morrow Ken Kenny Sprinters Pictured above right: Randy Cornelius Mike King Danny Taylor Bob Jones Rodney Trimble Mike Williams Javelin Pictured at left: Mike Morrow Richard Roberts Mike Williams 153 Mile-Relay Broad Jump Pictured Above Above Right Danny Taylor Randy Cornelius Charles Martin Mike Morrow Mike Williams Robert Doctric Rodney Trimble Hurdlers Below Right Robert Doctric Rickey Basdon John White 154 440 Relay Randy Cornelias Mike Williams Rodney Trimble Bob Jones Field Men Mike Morrow Rodney Trimble Robert Doc trie Rickey Basdon David Newton Lee Burger (not pictured) 155 MARCHING SOUTHERNERS Jacksonville State University has long considered the Marching Southerners one of its major assets. The Southerners were organized in 1956 by Dr. John Finley as a new concept in marching bands. The Southerners incorporate the sounds of the bugle corps and stage band with a Latin American flavor all within the influence of Southern tradition. The result has been the Southernersâ increasing popularity throughout the United States. David L. Walters is the director of the Southerners. Mr. Walters is a well known composer-arranger, and he is responsible for the repertoire of the Southerners. 156 157 BALLERINAS Johnnie Lou Payne Melissa Caine Kathy Hamilton Donna Johnson Glenda Arrington Susan Clifton Sandy Jones Paulette James Charlotte Key Darlene Braswell Joy Gilreath Roxanne James Janice Kilpatrick 158 Sandy Kendricks Jill Mathis Susan Wainscott Sue King Sharon Musick Wanda Williams Lana Musso Sandra Tyson Kay Willis Reniel Myers Karen Waters Charlotte Wilson Alan Arnett David Arnold Ellen Bell. Just to name a few of our many contributions to campus life, the Phi Muâs can claim ROTC sponsors, ballerinas, fraternity little sisters and a fraternity sweetheart, beauties, dorm officers and AWS officers. With the advantages of our way of life, the student gains memorable associations and profitable contacts with fine young men of varied personalities and interests. In finding his place in Alpha Tau Omega, three great principles are imbedded in his mindâBrotherhood, Religion, and Scholarship. By striving for perfection in developing a well rounded gentleman, a major step in the pathway to success is achieved. Alpha Tau Omega is unique among fraternities in that it was founded upon Christian principles with Christian ideals as its goals. ALPHA ATC2 TAU OMEGA 175 Epsilon Pi Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta was the first womenâs sorority on Jax Stateâs campus. It was colonized Nov. 15, 1967, and chartered March 2, 1968. Since that time we have been active in all phases of campus life. However, Alpha Xi Delta is more than that. It is the feeling we have for one anotherâ warm, mutual, confident, strong and enduring. It is the spark that flashes when we meet a sister from miles distantâor years away in age. It is the devotion we feel toward our fraternity ideals. It is the common bond of understanding which creates friendships in a strange land. STAFF 251 When a man communicates with his peers, he is fortunate. When a man communicates with the younger generation, especially with those over whom he is in authority, he is miraculous. Such a man possesses enthusiasm for ideas, knowledge of the great cultures of the world, insight and understanding of human nature, and compassionate acceptance of those around him. For these qualities for your sincere interest in us and your unselfish consideration of us in ways too numerous to declare, we salute youâ HOWARD PRICHARD 25? We know that at first you will find each of our errors and complain loudly about them. The realization that this volume will become a cherished possession which will offer you a link to the past has given us the strength to work together with a few dedicated staff members to finish this book. We believe that you will find much to enjoy and appreciate as you scan these pages. Now that we are finally finished with this monumental task, we find that we can also remember the work with pleasure and pride. I2 v4 ' icll J 336 .
