DEDICATION 1 O Jacksonville State College—where we live, love and learn— our school with its picturesque campus set among the hills and of to itself, as if to shelter our way of life. When years have passed, and we must rely on our memories to revisit her, what will come to your mind? A portrait of Bibb Craves with its sun-glinted windows when the dogwoods are blooming? Or perhaps you favored the lighted Bibb Craves at night, standing aglow at the crest of the horse shoe. And as you remember, you will see the rest of the building family: the library, where we crammed so hard for those exams; the dorms, our homes away from home; and of course, the S.U.B. where we relaxed and played. Perhaps then, the gaze of memory will fall upon the stadium, and once again you will feel emotion swell within you, just as it did when the Camecocks ran onto the field in their red and white array or when The Southerners burst into their exciting Fanfare. Oh to be there in that circle of buildings once again! Yet. buildings would just be buildings without the warmth of friendship that encircles those of Jax State. The friendliest campus in the South and how well she deserves that name! Remember the gab sessions under the gossip tree, in the dorm rooms, and around a fable in the ‘Grab’’ Yes. these will be our favorite memories, for while we are here, only rarely do we realize the depth of our feeling for Jax State. But as we leave, each to pursue his own paths in life, a part us will remain with her, and we will remember. No, we will not forget though wc be far, far away. 4

PROLOGUE T HE MIMOSA is an expanding example of the students and their abilities here at Jacksonville State College. This book is representative of the school and of its students. It is even rr ore true this year than in past years because all students attending Jacksonville State College are represented within this cover, and the Mimosa, itself, is dedicated to the college it portrays. It must be remembered that a college is not only the buildings of brick, mortar, and steel, but also its faculty and administration whom we find shadowed behind the materials. We find many types of people On our faculty; men and women of different religious beliefs, different political views, different nationalities, and different schools of learning. We cannot say that a faculty member should fit into a certain category or possess a certain way of teaching, for each is an individual wifhm himself. However, Dr. Emmett Price would be our example of the type of faculty member who does so much to build and advance any college. He is a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, has a Doctorate of Philosophy in Biology, and is considered to be one of the foremost parasitologists in the world. In acquiring these distinctions he obtained not only a vast knowledge, but also a genuine understanding of mankind. Dr. Price's understanding and knowledge serve as a light in the darkness to lead his students from the depths of innocent ignorance to the realization of a more enlightened and richer life. It is faculty members like Dr. Emmett Price who are a vital force in the growing institution that is Jack-sonville State College. 3

A TRIBUTE TO OUR MASCOT FHE Gamecock is a feathered warrior, noted for the stoic valour, unbelievable courage and obstinate spirit with which he fights to his death. It was with these characteristics in mind, that the students of Jacksonville State Teachers College, in January of 1947, voted to make him their mascot. Since that time, many teams have borne his name and earned his colors with the courage and spirit of the warrior for which they were named. His caricature has become a symbol of loyalty, to bring pride to the Jacksonville State College students and unity to their cause. It graces the sweatshirts, the notebooks, the windshields—all that is part of the school for which it stands—OUR GAMECOCK! Isn't it only fitting that he should be chosen as your guide through the 1964 yearbook? Now go along with him to tour your campus and review your school year, !963-’64, as depicted by THE MIMOSA. 5
