This book is representative of the school and of its students. It is even rr ore true this year than in past years because all students attending Jacksonville State College are represented within this cover, and the Mimosa, itself, is dedicated to the college it portrays. It must be remembered that a college is not only the buildings of brick, mortar, and steel, but also its faculty and administration whom we find shadowed behind the materials. We find many types of people On our faculty; men and women of different religious beliefs, different political views, different nationalities, and different schools of learning. We cannot say that a faculty member should fit into a certain category or possess a certain way of teaching, for each is an individual wifhm himself. However, Dr. Emmett Price would be our example of the type of faculty member who does so much to build and advance any college. He is a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, has a Doctorate of Philosophy in Biology, and is considered to be one of the foremost parasitologists in the world. In acquiring these distinctions he obtained not only a vast knowledge, but also a genuine understanding of mankind. Dr. Price's understanding and knowledge serve as a light in the darkness to lead his students from the depths of innocent ignorance to the realization of a more enlightened and richer life. It is faculty members like Dr. Emmett Price who are a vital force in the growing institution that is Jack-sonville State College. 3 DEDICATION 1 O Jacksonville State College—where we live, love and learn— our school with its picturesque campus set among the hills and of to itself, as if to shelter our way of life. When years have passed, and we must rely on our memories to revisit her, what will come to your mind? A portrait of Bibb Craves with its sun-glinted windows when the dogwoods are blooming? Or perhaps you favored the lighted Bibb Craves at night, standing aglow at the crest of the horse shoe. And as you remember, you will see the rest of the building family: the library, where we crammed so hard for those exams; the dorms, our homes away from home; and of course, the S.U.B. where we relaxed and played. Perhaps then, the gaze of memory will fall upon the stadium, and once again you will feel emotion swell within you, just as it did when the Camecocks ran onto the field in their red and white array or when The Southerners burst into their exciting Fanfare. Oh to be there in that circle of buildings once again! Yet. buildings would just be buildings without the warmth of friendship that encircles those of Jax State. The friendliest campus in the South and how well she deserves that name! Remember the gab sessions under the gossip tree, in the dorm rooms, and around a fable in the ‘Grab’’ Yes. these will be our favorite memories, for while we are here, only rarely do we realize the depth of our feeling for Jax State. But as we leave, each to pursue his own paths in life, a part us will remain with her, and we will remember. No, we will not forget though wc be far, far away. 4 A TRIBUTE TO OUR MASCOT FHE Gamecock is a feathered warrior, noted for the stoic valour, unbelievable courage and obstinate spirit with which he fights to his death. It was with these characteristics in mind, that the students of Jacksonville State Teachers College, in January of 1947, voted to make him their mascot. Since that time, many teams have borne his name and earned his colors with the courage and spirit of the warrior for which they were named. His caricature has become a symbol of loyalty, to bring pride to the Jacksonville State College students and unity to their cause. It graces the sweatshirts, the notebooks, the windshields—all that is part of the school for which it stands—OUR GAMECOCK! Isn't it only fitting that he should be chosen as your guide through the 1964 yearbook? Now go along with him to tour your campus and review your school year, !963-’64, as depicted by THE MIMOSA. 5 BIBB GRAVES HALL LIBRARY The Ramona Wood Library was named for the first librarian, Mrs. C R. However, when the campaign was over for both powers the two clubs had once again tied for the AlC championship. JSC and Florence both whipped Livingston and Troy, two AlC clubs, in the regular season and as a result gave both the Gamecocks and Lions identical 2-0-1 marks. Jax State and Florence repeated a performance that was the same as last year when Jacksonville and the Lions tied 7-7 at Jacksonville and tied for the crown. Round end with Marler! CO-CHAMPS AGAIN! 98 EUGENE GRIEP ZACK ROBERSON RONNIE HARRIS LARRY JOE DAVIS DONALD VINSON A toe was the difference . . . Jacksonville State’s trip to Cape Giradeau, Missouri, proved to be a long one back as )SC fell to host Southeast Missouri by a 10-7 margin. The Gamecocks, on the top end of 7-3 score going mto the final minutes of play, fell apart on defense and opportunist Missouri went to the air lanes to get the win. The loss was the first of the year for jSC against one tie. the 0-0 battle with Florence. j L PASS JACK CAULDIN Give me just one more block! Delta downs Jaxmen in thriller.. 7-6!! Delta State invaded Jacksonville September 21 and used rain, mud, and an extra point to turn back the Gamecocks, 7-6. JSC, behind the fine running of Ray Vinson, rallied to narrow a 7-0 lead to 7-6 in the second half, but a blocked PAT by the Statesman prevented J'ville from tying the score. Tommy Smith's blocked PAT was the last try for a JSC score and the Jaxmen saw their bid for an upset go down the drain. The loss was the second straight for the JSC eleven and total margin of difference between win and loss in the two setbacks was a total of four points. CARTER ROPER T0NY ADAMS CARTER HOWARD y L Jacksonville State used the fine running of two freshmen Tailback Ray Vinson and Wingback Bill Mills stole the show at Troy and the Gamecocks picked up their first win of the year by whipping the Red Wave, 15-7. Mills sped 42 yards for one JSC touchdown and Vinson tallied on a seven yard marker. The Gamecocks' tough forward wall stopped the potent offense of the Red Wave time and again in the second half when it looked like Troy would pull out the win. BOBBY WELCH TOMMY CARPENTER JOE MARLER H5Jfe44l Around end with the Preacher!! Homecommg is happy affair—we won! Arkansas Tech fell victim to a fired-up Jacksonville eleven at Jacksonville and JSC took the visitors, 22-7. on Saturday, Sept. T2, This was homecoming as it was supposed to be. The visitors struck on the first play of the game to score on a long touchdown pass, but their lead was short-lived as the Games-cocks kept coming and before the evening was over Arkansas was throughly trounced. For the Gamecocks it was their second straight win of the year and sent their won-lost mark soaring to a 2-2-! record. BILLY PETTUS BENNY STRIPLIN Louisiana College victim of JSC defense The Wildcats of Louisiana College ran into more than they could handle on Saturday night, Oct. 19 as a rock-rib Gamecock defense crushed their attack and buried them, 21-15. The sterling play of Tackles Paul Beard and Gary Tucker was the highlight of the contest as JSC ground out a 21-0 lead in the first half before sitting back in the second half to cruise in for the victory. This was the third straight win for Jacksonville. ,Q at FRANK DEAN )iO Al TERRY HARRIS JOE TURNER 103 PHILLIP JOLLY JOE KINES 4 After firmly trouncing three clubs ir a row Jacksonville took on powerful Chattanooga. However the cards were not stacked for a win at Chattanooga as had been the case in the last three and a high-powered passing attack by the Moccasins blanked the Gamecocks 1 4-0. End Ronnie Harris played one of his finest games of the season m this battle, but his efforts were not enough to turn back the tough host team MIKE MANN Bill Mills goes for yardage against Chattanooga The Gamecocks in a hard fought game were dropped by the Mississippi Choctaws. This was the second year that the Choctaws handed the Gamecocks a defeat. Tipton stopped by tough Choctaw To close Out the season in style, the Jaxmen dropped Livingston 13 to 7. The Tigers were leading the Gamecocks 7 to 0 at half time, but the determined Jaxmen came back fired up and closed out the season with a 4 4 1 record. RAY VINSON Ray is probably one of the few athletes as a freshman to break into the starting eleven. He not only was a season starter, but he led the Gamecocks with 1 200 total yards rushing.
