CAROLINE EDWARDS The paintings of Caroline Edwards arc a key to the character of the woman. Full of quiet beauty and dignity, tasteful and deeply genuine, they express her own graceful adjustment to life. It is significant that her best known work was in portraiture, for in this medium she revealed her abiding interest in human individuality. So was she also as a teacher of art—personally interested in her students, eager that each should discover his or her own creativity, and quick to offer expert and gentle guidance. Trained at Sophie Newcomb College and the Art Institute of Chicago, Mrs. Edwards had been associated with the Jacksonville faculty for four years before her untimely death on July 25, 195T The college mourns her loss with gratitude for that part of her which still remains with us. DR. One of the finest things that can be said of a teacher is that he compels his students to think. Such a man was Dr. Cayley, who died on May 17, 195d. Tough-minded and keen of speech, he approached each class as a kind of combat in which the weapons were intelligence and information, the field w'as the accumulated experience of mankind, and the victory was Truth. His students remember how it feels to be hemmed in, driven to the wall, and forced to examine ideas in the light of evidence. Thus was built a select and devoted following which is a living monument to his career. Dr. Cayley was broadly educated at the Universities of Toronto and Manitoba, and at the University of Chicago where he received the Ph D. A member of the Jacksonville faculty since 193 4, he was, at the time of his death, head of the political science department and chairman of the social science division. His special pleasure was the preparation of pre-law students, a field in which he earned notable recognition. The college can pay him no f;ner tribute than to preserve his veneration for “scholarship,” which was to him the greatest word in the English language. ji 15 DEDICATION In Jacksonville's greatest single year of building expansion, it is appropriate that the MIMOSA be dedicated to the men who are chiefly responsible. Dr. Cole, our president, Solon Glover, our business manager, and John Duncan, our superintendent of buildings, have commenced or finished eight new buildings and additions, including a science building, two new dormitories, a home economics laboratory, an all-purpose building, and an expanded elementary school. As further tokens of their astute guidance — and Jacksonville’s rapid g been projected fc rth — five more buildings have Our Appreciation to Mr. Opal R. Lovett The Mimosa would not have been possible without the wrork and cooperation of our photographer. He worked in the mornings, noon and into late hours of the night shooting and printing pictures. He many times forgot about his health and neglected his family just to see the Mimosa grow and become the finest of all annual publications. Knowing him as we do, we recognize and appreciate his contributions, not only to the Mimosa, but to the campus activities as a whole. APPRECIATION ADMINISTRATION 18 9 President and First Lady A happy combination of dignity and friendliness is the rare quality which distinguishes the college’s First Lady. Deeply genuine and always cordial, the gracious hostess of The President’s Mansion continually attracts the respect and warm regards of the student body and faculty. Thus she shares in her husband’s work by fostering the spontaneous unity which is an important and pleasant mark of the Jacksonville campus. 20 as a public speaker are measures of the privilege ].S.T,C. enjoys in having him as President. Widely known throughout Alabama and the South as an expert on college problems and constantly in demand for conferences and speaking engagements, he still finds time to maintain a keen interest in student affairs. His deft talent for constructive personal and public relations is a major key to the re-markable growth the college has undergone during his thirteen years as chief executive. The Dean DR. C. R. WOOD The thirty-four-year tenure of Dr. Claude Rudolphus Wood as instructor and dean has been characterized by fidelity to duty and loyalty to the college. His long acquaintance with other college deans and administrators has made him a force not only at Jacksonville but throughout the state. THE DEAN S HOME IS J.O. Only the University of Chattanooga and one of the best teams in the history of rival Florence State managed to stop Al Woodham, Freddie Casey, Billy Hicks and other great hacks, running behind a big Une that was outstanding from end to end. This time they were rating the new Jax team as good as the boys who built fame at Pensacola. The Moccasins took a 24-0 win, but even Chattanooga scouts admitted that there wasn't as much difference in the teams as the score indicates. A 58-yard run by Chattanooga's Dick Young put the first score on the board in the first quarter, and the Moccasins used two more.long runs to run up an 18-0 lead at the half. Another Chattanooga touchdown in the final period accounted for all of the scoring as the Moccasins failed to add an extra point. The Gamecocks suffered through their opening game without being able to get an offense started, an ailment that was to continue until they returned to home grounds. The Four Horsemen! 103 GUS STEFANU GAMECOCKS—14 MARYVILLE—0 The Gamecocks scored when the game was six minutes old, and then added another touchdown in the second period to down Maryville’s Scotties, 14-0, in the second road game of the year. A1 Woodham scored the first counter on a 12-.yard run after a pass from Paul Thompson to ‘ Springy'' Clark put the ball within striking distance. Pistol' Bentley added the extra point. Freddie Casey scored the second touchdown on a 30-yard belly play, but the officials blew the whistle when they lost the ball completely. Casey made it for keeps three plays later, after Woodham and Big Bill Hicks had moved the ball closer. Bentley again added the point. Although the Gamecocks had to overcome three 15-yard penalties for their second scores, the yardage stepped off against hem hurt in an ill-fated drive during the final quarter. Jacksonville's offense was strong enough during the first half when Thompson was sending Woodham, Casey and Hicks for good gains. The second half failed to net much yardage as the Gamecock offense stalled within sight of the Scottie goal. Carl Harrison's kicking kept the Gamecocks out of trouble most of the night, while an outstanding defensive game by Bob Coley, Bull'' Bailey, Joe Roberts and Alex Mandli kept Maryville backs bottled up. TRAVIS WALKER Center BOB COLEV End ROY ’ BULL' BAILEY Tackle 104 G. B. BEASLEY Gu4fJ PISTOL BENTLEY Guard GAMECOCKS—7 CARSON NEWMAN—0 Jacksonville’s offense showed its usual early-game form as Bob Coley recovered a Jax fumble in the first quarter to score the only touchdown against Carson Newman in the third consecutive game with a Tennessee opponent. Wood ha ms touchdown came after Bob Coley and Alex Mandli partially blocked an Eagle punt and Jacksonville took over on the 35 yard line. Casey picked up five and Wood ham shook loose for a 2 5-yard run. Bill Hicks clipped another yard from the distance before Woodhai: crashed over and fumbled in the end zone. Coley’s alertness saved the day as he fell on the ball for the points. Bentley' added the point. Jacksonville’s big line made the game complete with a brilliant goal-line stand in the first period after a fumble gave the Eagles the ball on the Gamecock 20. The threat ended on the one-yard line as Coley, Mandli, Roberts and Travis Walker rose to the occasion. The offense ate up the yardage in mid-field during the second half, but never managed to click within the ten-yard line. Woodham, Casey and Lyle Darnell were the top gainers for the night. PAUL THOMPSON Quarterback BILL CLARK End JOE ROBERTS Tackle GAMECOCKS—46 LIVINGSTON—0 AL WOODHAM Halfback The Gamecocks went through their third consecutive game without allowing an opponent to score as they toppled Livingston, 46-0, in the first home game of the year. Billy Hicks started the riot against the state foe when he raced 31 yards for the opening touchdown in the first few minutes of the game. Bob Coley set up the play by recovering a fumble on the Tiger 34. Jacksonville drove from the mid-tield stripe for the second score as Hicks again crashed over Coley set up another tally late in the first quarter when he recovered his second Livingston fumble. A pass from Gene Hanson to Bill Clark and a lateral to Virgil Holder put the ball on the four, and Holder went over for the points. Wood ham scored the only tally of the second quarter, with help from Casey and Bill Hicks. The fifth touchdown was Travis Walker's responsibility shortly after the second half began. He blocked a Tiger kick to give the Jaxmen the ball on the three. Casey hit center for the score, and Bentley kicked his second point of the night. Hicks scored again in the third quarter, after racing 46 yards to the Livingston 19- Two plays later he was over for the touchdown. The final Jax tally was left to Darnell, who put the finishing touches on the game with a spectacular 88-yard runback of an intercepted pass. RAY CAMPBELL F.n J 106 Queen Joan reigns for a day. GAMECOCKS—38 TROY—7 Jacksonville rolled to its fourth straight win, the second over a rival Alabama team, when they ran up a 38-7 score against Troy’s Red Wave in College Bowl, It was the first time in four games that an opponent had been able to score against the Gamecocks’ strong defense. Harold Pistol'’ Bentley and Bob Coley led the hard-charging line that bottled up Troy’s offense on all but one play. Other defensive standouts were Bill Clark, Ray Burgess, G. B. Beasley, Bull Bailey, Joe Roberts and Alex Mandli. Woodham accounted for the first score with a dazzling 43-yard gallop in the first quarter. Bill Hicks smacked over for the second tally after Coley had recovered a Troy fumble, and a 39-yard pass from George Kecch to Freddie Casey was good for the third. The Gamecocks scored the first time they had possession of the ball in the second half when Woodham crossed the goal to climax a steady drive by Casey and Hicks, Chester Skates rammed across another score in the fourth period after Paul Thompson and Carl Harrison, with help from Skates, put the ball on the five. Charlie Grisham added the final tally during the closing minutes. CHESTER SKATES Fullback CHARLIE GRISHAM Halfback CARL HARRISON Halfback 107 GAMECOCKS—14 AUSTIN PE AY—14 Gene Hanson threw one down the stove pipe and Ray Campbell was there to make a brilliant catch which gave the Gamecocks the chance to gain a 14-14 tie with Austin Peay in the dying minutes of a road game. The pay-off pass came when the Tennessee team held a 14-7 edge over the Jaxmen with less than thirty seconds to go. Campbell caught the 14-yard heave in the midst of two defending backs to put the ball on the one-yard line. Freddie Casey scored the points on a quickie, and Pistol' Bentley made the kick that tied the game. Jacksonville completely dominated play during the first quarter, but was unable to punch over a score. It was left for the Governors to light up the score board, They did it during the last minute of the first half when John Martin went across. The Gamecocks tied the score near the middle of the third quarter when A1 Woodham raced 62 yards for a touchdown, and Bentley added his first extra point. Austin Peay scored again early in the final period when Martin threw a 45--yard pass to Bobby Way. Jacksonville took the kick-off and marked up four first downs behind the quarterbacking of George Keech. Hanson then came in to make his desperate toss. Roy Bull’' Bailey, Travis Walker, and Joe Roberts were the defensive standouts for the visiting Gamecocks. GEORGE KEECH Quarterback 108 VIRGIL HOLDER Fullback WILSON HICKS End GAMECOCKS—63 SOUTH GEORGIA—12 Jacksonville scored 22 points in the first quarter and rolled up a total of 429 yards in total offense to completely hum ble a South Georgia College team, 63-12. Freddie Casey gave the fans a preview of what was to come when he took the opening kick-off and raced 90 yards for the first score. After that it was all offense as Carl Harrison, Billy Hicks, Jerry Cole, Charlie Grisham, Ray Burgess, and Gene Hanson had a field day in the biggest scoring spree of the season, Harrison's score came after he had intercepted a Georgia pass and returned it to the Tiger 42-yard line. Two first downs and Harrison’s climax run accounted for the points. Bentley converted to make the score 13-0. Bailey blocked a punt on the Georgia 30-yard line and Joe Roberts carried it to the eight to set up the fourth score, which Hicks made on a five-yard run. Cole accounted for two points when he tackled a South Georgia runner behind the goal. Grisham scored the next two Jax touchdowns, one on a three-yard plunge and the other on a 12-yard run. Hulon Davis was mostly responsible for the second of Grisham s scores when he raced 70 yards to set up the play. South Georgia scored first in the third quarter after the Gamecocks had fumbled on the 12. The second score came on a 12-yard pass. A1 Woodham set up another Jax score when he returned the kick-off to the Tiger 29. Hanson then passed to Burgess for the pay-off play. GAMECOCKS—37 WEST GEORGIA—0 Gamecock regulars retired early against West Georgia as the Jaxmen crashed to a 37-0 decision at College Bowl. The first string played only one minute, while the reserves put in their busiest night of the year against an outclassed foe. Charlie Grisham opened the scoring in the middle of the first quarter, climaxing a 65-yard drive. Grisham’s score came on a 17-yard end sweep and furnished the only score of the opening, period. The Gamecocks opened the second quarter with a drive from the West Georgia 35. Zenoy Jolley carried over, after the Jaxes picked up a first down on the 25. The Gamecocks didn’t get up full steam until after the intermission. When they did get started, they rolled up 25 points as Virgil Holder, Hulon Davis, Wayne Murdock, Johnny Johnston and Grisham figured in the scoring. Holder made his points on a 35-yard break through the middle, and Grisham ran the extra point. The Gamecocks marched 90 yards for the next score, and Davis accounted for the final ten yards, TwcrMurdock passes, one to Ray Campbell and the other to Johnston, put six more points on the board, and finished up the night’s action. Murdock and Gene Hanson had their passing clicking, with Campbell doing most of the receiving. Grisham. Davis, Holder, and Chester Skates carried most of the offensive load on the ground, while Jerry Cole and Joe Currie were among the defensive standouts. 110 BILL RODDAM Tackle Center HULON DAVIS Halfbaik JOE CURRIE Center GEORGE SIZEMORE Guard DON BULGER Center JERRY COLE Tackle GAMECOCKS—0 FLORENCE—21 Jacksonville lost its chance to claim the Alabama state championship when the mighty Lions of Florence, one of the best teams in the history of the rival school, crashed Gamecock hopes with a 21 -0 verdict. The Jacksonville offense was mostly brought to a halt by Florence's charging line, while the defense was spotty. Fumbles helped considerably in the Gamecock downfall as the Lions took advantage of miscues to score their first two touchdowns. Windell Taylor accounted for the first score after Jacksonville fumbled on the Gamecock 42-yard line. Taylor scored again in the first quarter after Florence recovered another fumble in almost the same place. Taylor managed to monopolize the touchdown parade by marking up the last one in the third quarter. Joe Brewer did the same for the point-after-touchdcwn department by kicking all three. Billy Hicks was Jacksonville's top star and ground out 52 of the Gamecocks’ 82 yards. Quarterback GAMECOCKS—32 HOWARD—0 The Gamecocks put the finishing touches to a great 1954 season by beating Howard, 32 to 0. The final contest saw a team that was well-balanced in offense and defense as Al Woodham set a new record in total offense for the Gamecocks, and the big line held Howard to a minus six yards for the afternoon. Woodham and Casey led the campaign that netted a total of 478 yards and accounted for at least one touchdown in each period. Casey scored the first touchdown on a 52-yard run and then added the second on a 30-yard gallop. Woodham finished the game with 186 yards to his credit, while Casey managed 146. The Jacksonville line and secondary allowed How'ard only two serious threats during the entire game. Once the Bulldogs reached the Jacksonville eleven, and moved to the Jax 28 on another effort.
