The 50 MIMOSA marks the end of a turbulent half century, wvhich saw two world wars, two booms, a recession and marvelous inventions and techniques For Jacksonville State Teachers College it marks fifty years of expansion and progress from a small college offering only degrees in teaching to a modern institution offering various degrees and pre professional courses This MIMOSA also marks the entrance of a new half century, and the speculation of what if holds m store causes us to receive it with an attitude of hope and prayer for progress toward peace and prosperity I OR. .mifS II. Professor of Foreign Languages Di Jones initiated and has maintained the International Program and its • ampus center, the International House, and this, wc bebeve, is the most signifrr mt advance made at Jacksonville during the past half-century The International Program lifted Jacksonville from the status of a school among Americans to that of a school among nations, it actively illustrates the world wide effort to promote understanding among nations, and peace among men; under rfs present conscientious leadership .it is destined itself to have an influential part in the exchange of good will Because of his tireless love and devotion to Jacksonville, the International Program, and people everywhere, wc respectfully and affectionately dedicate the 50 MIMOSA to Dr James H Jones 4 DR. JAMES H. JONES B VI 1 II n Not Ionf’ before the end nf summer school I,1st August, the school and the community were shocked and saddened by the news of the death of Mrs Leone Cole, wife of our President Her absence from our midst has left a gap impossible among her acquaintances, to be filled As students we knew her as a tender, kind, and gracious being, ever ready to counsel and to help easy of access and quick in sympathy We knew her as a devoted wde and understanding mother Wc recognized tn her a person of equable deposition, of sound judgment and of wide vision, a being serene in the knowledge of a life well lived We only gradually became conscious of the courage that her outward serenity betokened The President s H me. which she so largely planned, remains with us as an enduring monument to her impeccable taste m life The new Leone Cole Aud'torium. m its beauty and fitness, is but one expression by the community and state of the respect and affection wh ch wc also wsh to express in thir edition of THC MIMOSA PRESIDENT S HOME LEONE COLE AUDITORIUM 7 iivh B R.O.T.C. SENIOR CLASS THE The atmosphere of an institution is the subtle spirit quality which lives in memory and in history long after the material memories have crumbled into dust. College spirit, traditions, and atmosphere are caught by every generation of students. Atmosphere belongs to the college itself. It has been created by the generations of students who have lived and learned and loved in its halls Here the faith of parents in their sons and daughters mingles with the high ambitions and Sturdy efforts of their young. Here is hope tinged with doubt, losing itself in victory or defeat—for many have won but some have lost. Here too is charity—suffering long but kind—in students and faculty alike, for the path of learning is not always light Here are scholarship and artistry and craftsmanship. Here are friends and friendship, youthful aspirations and heroes to emulate. Activities, too—-football games, an autumn long affair; music and a college dance: lessons to do—hard chores at worst, creative acts at best; customs to be acquired.and used; traditions to be respected—the spirit of our J S T. C.. the atmosphere of our college, the medium in which we live. Live in it, acquire it, contribute to it to maintain it. FIRST ROW ABNEY, BYRON C.; Albertville; B.S..
