Ex Libris it •Stf fftvraffon flbmftufom b Ob' Qaraffon J tsa r EIIIC A T EII h I IS EN11)Ei T III)I STll NILE We respectfully dedicate this first issue of The Mimosa to a former student who has returned to lead ably our college with the progressive force and friendly cooperation which comes from understanding. The increase in enrollment and the extensive building program have added much to the complexities of his office and yet he still finds time to know students and to discuss their problems with them. In the five years he has acted in this capacity, President Cole has won a high place in the admiration of students, members of the faculty, alumni, and friends. P R E S1IIE IT ’ S MESSAGE Memory and imagination are two of the greatest mental assets we possess. Imagination is the forerunner of change and progress. The recollections of yesteryear are provided by memory. In the years that are to ccme, this issue of the Mimosa will serve to remind you of pleasant and blessed experiences of yesteryear. Its pages will bring back to you faces and events you have known during your college experience. This publication is destined to provide for our students a retrospect of pleasant associations. I congratulate the staff whose untiring efforts have made this issue possible. HOUSTON COLE CAFETERIA LIBRARY mm THE GOVERNOR An ardent supporter of education and youth is Governor James 0. Folsom, Alabama's youngest Chief Executive. His untiring efforts to roise the educational standards of our state is evidence of his campaign pledge to give Alobomo a sound and progressive administration. The faculty and students of J. S. T, C. were honored recently by the Governor's visit to the campus. DR. AUSTIN R. MEADOWS Dr. Austin R. Meadows, a groduote of Jacksonville State Teochers College, was recently elected to serve Alobomo as the Stole Superintendent of Education. Dr. Meadows hos served in various capacities in several of the school systems of the stote, and since 1929 he hos been a member of the State Deportment of Education. Many of the leading educators of the stote hove complimented highly the work already accomplished by him in the educational field. THE DEAN Claude Rudolphus Wood serves Jacksonville Slate Teachers College in a commendable manner as dean and as a professor of mathematics. As dean. Dr. Wood finds many responsibilities resting upon his shoulders. He discharges these duties in a very capoble and efficient manner. His pleasing personality and business-like manner are respected and well-liked by everyone who has had contact with him. Dean Wood is largely responsible for the high academic standing which the college maintains at the present time. RAMONA MIDDLETON WOOO GENEVA STEPHENS PYRON R. LISTON CROW The famous quotation, Well done thou good and faithful servant, must here be said of our college administrative officials. They have worked diligently to keep the innumerable departments of our institution operating smoothly and closely integrated. By their sound Judgement these officials have aided immeasurably the growth and development of Jacksonville State Teachers College. Through their keen foresight a greater institution will most assuredly be realized. SELF (OLLEGE HIGH ALTA LUCILLE MILLICAN Social Studies SCHOOL The College High School faculty is on integral port of our college. Under the efficient leadership of Mr. Robert Gilbert, principal, these supervisors are ably discharging their duty: training future teachers for service in the field of secondary education. They are well qualified for the important positions which they hold. By participating whole-heartedly in the activities of the college and the community, these supervisors have gained the respect of both the students and the citizens of the community. EUGENE O. MALONE JOHNNILEE HARPER MARY ETTA STEPHENSON There is o dire need for teochers of the elementary grades who are qualified to guide students in meeting the problems of living in our present day society. DILLON ISS BEATRICE JONES STEVENSON WEATHERLY HALL Ike CLASSES SENIORS! The thrill oI the word! The gcol is in sight! We ore reody to go out into the world ond moke our dent in it. For many of the seniors this marks the end of four long but happy years at J. S. T. C.; for many others it marks the end of several years of anxiety and hope broken by the rumblings of war. To all, however, it brings the sad note of parting and the feeling of regret that we must now leave the halls that we have trod so long, the atmosphere of eternal friendliness that we have come to recognize as a tradition here. Many of the seniors who got into the swing of things back in the years when they were freshmen are now recognized as the leaders of the campus. This year, for the first time in the history of the school, the senior class brought a big-name orchestra (Dean Hudson' here to play for the grand event of the year, the Senior Ball. There is alwoys an increased tempo among the members of this closs, for after they poss the half-way mark, they are ready to take over the big jobs being vacated by the graduating seniors. Among the juniors are usually found the politicians of the campus, seeking the high offices in the Student Council ond other organizations while there is yet time. Like the seniors, the juniors represent a varied group. Many of them have returned with the expressed determination to graduate after their studies were interrupted by the war. The loyalty of the juniors to the school is shown by the fact that they always enter wholeheartedly into all campus activities. The highlight of the year for the juniors is the onnual dance which they alwoys sponsor, the Junior Prom. 9«50 I II II GlaU CLASS OFFICERS FRANCES STRIPLIN CATHERINE TROTTER JIM STRONG RUTH HAND SARA COX President Vice-President Secretary . All sophomores sigh with relief when they think about all the turmoil they went through that first year . . . English themes, speech classes, examinations, rat week, and one hundred other things that all good little freshmen must tolerate if they ever expect to become sophomores. After having completed their first year, however, the members of this class are always eager to dish it out to beginning freshmen, and in this wsy add much to the spirit of the student body. The more ambitious sophomores run for offices in the Student Council, and in this way lay the foundation for their success during the junior and senior years. Eager, energetic, and willing, the sophomore class always puts over with a bang the Sophomore Hop, its annual dance. s ii p ii o m (i it e eiaM CLASS OFFICERS President ..................Vice-President .......................Secretary ...................... Tired of being under the constant strain of ormy life, this group adjusted quickly to college life and joined in both the work and the ploy on the campus. Freshman activities ore numberless. Hardly a week posses that does not offer o dance, picnic, boll gome, or some other activity sponsored by members of the cbss. They enter in with groups of upperclassmen to plon all sorts of entertainments and programs for students and visitors. The program for the annual Spring Fiesto was sponsored by o group of talented freshmen, and what a gola affair it turned out to be! The freshmen con always afford to strut with pride at the never-failing success of their annual dance, the Freshman Frolic. Pog« 70 74? C. instituted at the beginning of the foil quarter a unique study for the advanced French students. The program worked out is the result of the arduous efforts of Dr. J. H. Jones, professor of French, Following this plan, the students study in small groups of four or five under French exchange students, who conduct the classes in French. Part of the doss period is spent in textbook study, part in conversation, and the remaining time in the discussion of the semi-monthly newspaper to which the students subscribe, or in discussing related reading. In addition to the activities of the class period, further opportunity is given the students to speak French at the meals served twice daily in the French dining room. Frequently an informal songfesl featuring French folk songs or a lecture on some phase o( French civilization follows the evening meal. Another feature of the program is that of celebrating holidays of both countries. The regular meal is supplemented by specific dishes required for the occasion and by group participation in the rituals. The French students and other members of the group present frequent programs for the civic clubs and schools of northeast Alaboma. These programs include an explanation of the project, talks by the French students on French culture and Franco-American relations, and French folk songs and dances by the girls in native costumes.. During their stoy here the exchange students, in addition to their teaching, ore making a study of Americon civilization. These student-teachers include Mesdemoilles Odette Michel and Simonne Repus-sard and Messieurs Robert Humbert and Fernand Morty. The hostess ond dietician is Madome Andree Alvernhe.
