They did not make any spectacular records during their season, but they came out a fighting aggressive team every game. The team faced one of the toughest schedules in the school’s history, whcih can be seen in their record. The team was led by the strong play of captains Paul Leib and Danny Griffin, and the outstanding performance of Chris Williams. Quarterback Steve Cully displayed a strong arm and showed great promise for the future. Turner led the team to a 17-1 record in dual action. The team placed well in the capital conference and in the district tournament. The golfers, led by Brad Goben who was low for the crimsons, narrowly missed advancing to the sectionals. Goben advanced to sectionals as an individual and performed well against the stiff competition. With many of the linkmen returning again next year, 1979-80's golf team should be successful. % Capts. Unfortunately, their record did not show this. A few bright spots could be seen throughout the season. Greg Havlin scored 45 points in the Crimsons rout of a strong Venice team, and Mike White and Paul Elsome turned in high point games of 36 and 32 respectively. The Crimson squad also turned in a fine showing against State runner-ups Quincy in the regional tournament. Paul Elsome held the team’s best field goal percentage for the season while Steve Roustio claimed the top free throw percentage and most assists, and Mike White had the most rebounds. The team was well supported even through their struggling season, and all players gave one hundred percent. Defying gravity and braving the hot summer weather, the seniors worked hard every day for two weeks; and despite the throwing of paint and rooftop games of tag, the class of '79 produced the best field-house J.H.S. has ever seen. 1978 HOMECOMING PARADE 123 R-O-W-D-I-E 126 Another homecoming at J.H.S. has come and gone, leaving fond memories for all. We will remember it as a week of laughter: Joe Potter giving his speech in the commons; guys doing anything to break the silence on hush day; the senior guys window-peeping at the senior girls’ overnight; and the snake dancers running through the 9:00 show at the Illinois Theater. It was a week of rivalry: the senior guys pulling the junior guys into the mud at the tug-o-war; the senior girls removing the junior girls’ truck from the Parade; and especially the junior girls’ tradition-breaking upset of the senior girls in the annual powderpuff game. It was a special time: for Jayne Verhoef, who was crowned 1978 homecoming queen; for the football team, who played their best; for everyone at the 1978 bonfire; for the sophomores who experienced their first homecoming; and for the seniors, who experienced their last. When all the craziness died down and the game was finally over, everyone dressed up in their finest and headed to the bowl for the annual homecoming dance. Girls carried red and white mums (a little battered after enduring the game), and guys fished through their wallets for the tickets that would get them through the front door. The bowl suddenly no longer a basketball court, was transformed into an awesome sight of red and white. Upon arrival, couples descended to the floor, ready to follow the latest craze to disco and boogey down. After the week was over, the Crimsons looked back on it and knew it would be one for reminiscing ... 127 THE. BE The J.H.S. music department's annual production donned a new look this year. The theme of the '78 show was The Best of Broadway,” and it featured musical excerpts from Broadway plays- past and present. MacMurray College extends best wishes to the 1979 graduates of J.H.S. We hope that those of you who are still making your decision about where to go to college will seriously consider MacMurray. On our campus are quite a few former J.H.S. graduates. We asked some of them why they chose MacMurray. Here are their comments: Tony Stevens, class of ’78 — I chose MacMurray partly because it has a good soccer program. Also I plan to get into vet school and the college has a good chemistry department.” Bob Clary, class of ’76 — I looked at the size ot tne school and I liked the student-teacher ratio. Everyone — students and faculty — seems to care about you. My teachers have also been very helpful in guiding me for when I grauate.” Lana Ecker, class of 77 — “I knew I wanted to get into elementary education and heard that Mac' had a good education department. I also picked 'Mac' because it has a good sports program.” Rick Baumgart, class of 76 — I'm into wrestling and I knew that 'Mac' could offer me a good wrestling program. I also feel that I'm getting a better education than I could get from many other colleges.” Dave Blanchette, class of 78 — The college had the courses I wanted and offered me a good financial aid package.” Sheri Mitchell, class of 77 — There's a certain friendliness between students, teachers and administrators that I like at Mac.' I feel comfortable and relaxed with my teachers and feel free to express myself. Steve Perkins, class of 75 — It's a small college and I like the personal attention. .Cl I I “ I MacMurray is a private, four-year liberal arts college which is fully accredited, co-educational and church-related.
