CRIMSON “J” JACKSONVILLE HIGH SCHOOL 500 WEST STATE JACKSONVILLE, ILLINOIS 62650 LXVII 1977-1978 School days have once again begun at Newton Bateman Memorial ... and once again under a new administration; however some things are different. For the first time in 65 years, school started without the use of the David Prince building. The Farmers’ State Bank and the Methodist Church annex have served as classrooms in its place. Another unusual thing is that the varsity football team has had its first winning season in 11 years. But the biggest change yet has been the school spirit that has once again returned to the halls of Jacksonville High. 3 THE CRIMSON 7 AN AUTUMN IN SPORTS OF SPIRIT WITH CRIMSONS 15 Kimberly K. The members of this football squad turned the team around and gained new respectability for Jacksonville as they posted a 6-3 record. Although the team suffered three losses, they just missed getting into the playoffs for the first time ever. Jacksonville’s high-power offense was led by quarterback Jamie Woodward and running-back Mike Richards. However credit must be given to everyone as each member played a big part in this year’s winning campaign. In 1977 the Crimson Golf Team posted a 17-0 record in dual competition. This stands as the best record in golf history at J.H.S. The Crimson linkmen placed 5th in the Capital Conference, and fourth in District, missing Sectional by only one stroke. The golfers also placed an impressive sixth out of twenty-five teams in the Southeast Invitational, with Bob Knepler being the low individual medalist out of 125 players. Knepler also placed 4th in district and then advanced to Sectional. Another individual standout was Terry Waltz who was low for the Crimsons in the Capital Conference. Lee Ward. Tim Pilcher, Greg Turner, Lee Terhark The 1977 cross country team had some bright spots and some dim spots. The bad news was that the Crimsons were favored to win the conference, but a surprising Lanphier team and some illnesses wrecked the ship. The bright spots for the Crimsons were that Scott Simmons broke the old sophomore record by running a 16:03, 27 seconds better than the old record. Other bright spots included sending twins Kerry and Kevin Smith to the sectional where they finished 19th and 27th out of the 118 runners. Earlier in the year, the Smiths ran 15:00 and 15:03 to put them 2nd and 3rd on the all-time cross country list. Luckily, the Crimsons will have Scott Simmons, T.J. McKula, and Lee Terhark back to lead them next fall. Even though the winter was bad, with many school days being cancelled, this year’s Crimsons had a fine 8-3 dual meet season. The team was led by co-captains Senior John Jackson and junior Mickey Clarey. With only a few returning lettermen and a fine group of sophomore monogram winners in Phil Price, Keith Acree, Rick Rolson, Todd Thorson, Rick Nelson, DaveRiffey, and Dick Heise, the Wrestling Crimsons went on to another steller season. Individually, Fred Hayes, senior, was voted the Most Valuable Player by his team mates. Fred capped off a fine dual meet season by winning the 112 lb. Capitol Conference Championship. Junior letter winners who also had fine individual records and were awarded school letters were Rob Haley, Mike Pickens, Mickey Clarey, Chris Williams, and Dan Griffin. Student managers for this year’s wrestling team were Cindy Cremer and Dean Spray. 1977-78 Wrestling Record JACKSONVILLE 48 .. 43 .. 42 .. 42 35 .. 21 .. 38 .. 10 . 42 .. 36 18 Glenwood 9 Jerseyville 23 Carrollton 11 Alton 22 East St. Louis 30 Eisenhower 37 Southeast 21 Springfield 17 Macomb 15 Canton 23 MacArthur 36 WON 8 LOST 3 83 JHS TRACKMEN HAVE Front row 1-r Coach A1 Rosenberger, Kerry Smith. There will be some outstanding individualism the sprints, hurdles, and our relay team should be strong, according to head coach A1 Rosenberger, who is in twenty-first season, and Dan Moy, who is in his sixteenth season. Girls sports at Jacksonville High School are advancing tremendously. This year a new event was added the girl’s basketball schedule. Jacksonville hosted a Holiday Invitational Tournament. Quincy, Carthage, Lincoln, Alton, Pekin, Limestone, and Brussels were the participants, with Limestone being the victors. Jacksonville participated in the Carrolton Invitational. Jacksonville defeated Calhoun, then lost to Brussels, and finally came back to beat Carrollton to capture third place. Easton hosted the regional. Jacksonville defeated East Pike and Havana to capture the title. Jacksonville held it’s own sectional this year. The support given to the team this year was excellent. As J.H.S. defeated the Southeast Spartans, Lincoln Railers were beating Quincy. Jacksonville later lost to Lincoln in a hair-raising match for the title. Ruby Wilson goes up for a nice shot. (Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution) awards. In years past, the senior class has voted on which of their classmates should receive these awards. This year, due to a shortage in time, Mr. Freehill appointed a committee of teachers to do the voting. The teachers nominated students on the basis of leadership, participation, and grades. The names of the top nominees were then sent around to the committee for final voting. DAR Cathy Versen Cathy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Versen, attended Salem Lutheran grade school, Jonothan Turner Junior High, and then J.H.S. Cathy originated the girls Fellowship of Christian Athletes Chapter, serving as girl’s captain all three years. She was sophomore class secretary, junior class secretary, and served as senior class president. Cathy lettered in tennis all three years, played volleyball two years, and participated in track one year. In the summer between her junior and senior years, Cathy was a Girls State delegate, being sponsored by the Rotary Club. Cathy plans to attend Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana this fall. She will study home economics-fashion merchandising, and business-managerial. Cathy hopes to own her own fabric store one day. SAR Bert Lesley Bert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Lasley, attended various grade schools, Turner Junior High, eighth and ninth grades in Fitchburg, Mass., and J.H.S. While attending J.H.S., he participated in Student Government for two years, Key Club for three years, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes for two years. Bert played football for J.H.S. for three years while participating in baseball, wrestling, and track for one year each. He was an active member of National Honor Society all three years. The band was taken from the condemned D.P. building to the Grace Church Annex. As if the move weren’t enough. 125 students were scheduled for band, the largest marching band in the history of J.H.S. With this large of a group more problems came up. The first was a shortage of uniforms, so the Band Parents worked hard to raise the money to buy more. The second problem occurred when the band was making plans to go the Fort Madison Rodeo Parade. It took four school buses to take the whole band. As you can see from the picture below, even with four school buses it was a bit crowded. Another first for the band was the purchase of eight red and white lance flags. They were carried by eight female members of the band, and added a very colorful touch to the back-end of the band. Even with all the problems the band was a success wherever it performed thanks to the hard work of the director, Mr. James Welch. During the 1977-78 school year, 80 students have participated in this program. The C.V.E. student goes to school for half a day — 4 hours — and the rest of the time he fills a full or part-time job. This program helps the student learn to deal with the job world and how to save money. It must be working because over the past eight years the students in this program have earned over a total of $700,000. 140 ELECTRONICS CLUB Left to right: Ron Cruzan, Larry Black, John Mullens, Marty DeFrates. 2nd row Mark Hickey, David Schuman.
