Text from Pages 1 - 176 of the 1975 volume:

MES PLAY concentration 9 — 14 1295 hours of the year are spent in school and most of that time in CLASS! go to the head of the class .......................... 15 — 34 The class of 75 has been anxiously awaiting this year. 1975 is finally here! follow the leader ................................... 35 50 Underclassmen learning from the mistakes of the upperclassmen (and sometimes taking the rap for them!). Follow happily, underclassmen, for you soon will lead. aggravation .......................................... 52 — 84 Pressure, frustration, and exhilaration are all included in sports. Aching muscles, rigorous workouts, and sacrificed time are things of the past when the game is won by your effort. Businesses generously donate funds to help finance our yearbook. They also donated many friendly faces! SPIRIT —GOT IT! SPIRIT —GOT IT! ’74-’75 was a year filled with spirit and involvement. The whole school, students and faculty alike, worked together to make dances, spirit week, student government week, sports events, and scholastic programs a great success. The fun was enjoyed by one and all, to say the least. Although the students had a lot of fun, they did accomplish a great deal of important work for the school and the student body. HONK FOR? [IGHTY concentration Here’s a look at the lighter side of the least discussed subjects at Jacksonville High School. Between the sports, the activities, the clubs, the fun and the frustration, one comes upon that favorite (?) topic — Academics! The students know how important education is, that’s why they take their work so seriously. (Ha! Ha!) From the academics at JHS, the students get a taste of life. They know the thrill of an “A” and the agony of a “D”. Another thing they learn is that a study hall can be a great relief from the drudgery of a full schedule. Jacksonville High School offers its students a variety of subjects from art to history to music to witchcraft. (So far, not too many witches have been seen flying through the halls.) 10 CRIMSONS Most of the main departments attempt to provide project centers for students involved in that department. Here, the students work independently and progress rapidly well, they progress. The English department furnishes a student with the basics — good grammar, a good background in different literatures of the world, and lessons in spelling. The second floor of the D.P. building is a most amazing place. While strolling near this place, one hears many odd sounds. What are these sounds? (You ask) Why of course! They are the sounds of foreign language in process. Let's see now, four plus six times the square root of the product when you take the cosine of the absolute value function for which x = 1 3y is true if and only if the triangles are congruent. What a problem! However, our math instructors are ready to help at all times. Did you ever want to learn how to dissect an earthworm? Our science teachers, who hold a mean razor blade, can show you with expertise. And then of course Physical Education displays everyone’s great physical ability to break arms, legs, fingers, and necks. What about typing and all the other business courses. Everyone learned how they were all thumbs when it came to typing. And what about that “Tempelman Shorthand” and all the squiggles? And good old History! Wasn't learning about the Civil War thrilling? And what about all those dates to learn that you always forgot the day after the test? Art was always a blast. It was a lot of fun throwing paint and clay, and tangling oneself up in yarn while in Crafts class. Many people found skills in themselves that they never knew that they had. Many of the guys developed new skills or improved old skills in drafting, woodshop, welding, etc. There were more girls in vocational classes this year then before. Paul G. Abbott “I'm as free as a bird now. And this bird cannot change.-' Lynard Skynard Matthew Adams Truth is generally the best vindication against slander. The 1975 Academic School Year is a most exciting and interesting period for the City Government of Jacksonville. We have now entered into our 151st year as a municipality — Jacksonville was founded April 26, 1825. The Sesquicentennial is truly an outstanding memorial to our total community progress. We as citizens of Jacksonville are celebrating this Sesquicentennial year in many fitting ways, but of greatest interest is the completion of the decade’s work on our new Central Park Plaza and the continued construction of more modern and better means of transportation into and out of our City. Certainly the next 150 years will be as bright as the last 150 have been.
