Sally is reminiscing: David is look- ing ahead. Compound the two mes- sages their thoughts reveal, and you've discovered the secret of a great nation, for undeniably, a nations strength lies with its youth. Turn back the pages of time, Sally, tell us about itl I. H. S. 1941 That was the year of slam-books and really fine 'lspecial assemblies . We were bewildered little freshmen then, stumbling from one thing to an- other with increasing amazement at this intriguing new worldwours to con- querl Those were carefree days- An excited mob of chattering, jab- bering, unsuspecting little freshies, their faces flushed with eagerness at what lay ahead flittle did they knowl was inching its way toward the inter- ior of ye olde auditorium. A stam- pede was never like thisll Far above the din of scraping feet, hearty greet- ing, pushing, shoving, bumping shoul- ders and elbows fto say nothing of hipsl, a persistent high-pitched voice was heard in a desperate attempt to hail a fellow classmate some two hun- dred students away. Who else but our own Shorty Holmes, attracting everyones attention but his confeder- ate in crime, Pretty-boy Shumaker. just behind him Bo Kumle was cling- ing protectively f?l to carrot-topped Barb Hopper. The four horsemen were holding their own not too many feet in the lead. These gay, giggling, georgeous gals ffiguratively speaking, of coursel included Charlotte fthe eld- est of six-or was it five-or is it four- well, anyhowl Deem, Pauline fthey call me giggles l Walihan, Ieanie- with the deep blue eyes-Wilkinson, and curvacious Maurita Cthat's her real namel Wessler. Inside, the hub-bub was even worse than out. Helter- skelter we dashed, regardless of whose feet were supporting us-our own or our neighbors Maggy Sevier and Frankie Reeve made a wild dash for a couple of unoccupied seats in the back of the auditorium flllll, and by some twist of fate landed precisely on the same spot. Then out of the calm and quietuia ghastly scream arose from one end of the jammed room. Ooooooo-me wittl' foot-you hurt me wittl' foot. Billy Drake stood spouting apolo- gies all over Donald f l'm nobody's baby -Tand no wonder-D Due, who was caressing the tortured toot- sie as if it were breakable-or al- ready broken fWilliam just doesn't know his own strengthl, Over in a far corner a scene such as this would inevitably be enacted: Act li Beulah Baker, eyeing Ieanie Fortner from a distance: Hey, chums, get a load of the latest-now that's what I call a hair-doll Nita Busey's dubious, Are you kidding? then followed by this bit of feminine logic: x'Shut yo' mouf, honey chile- you're just jealous. gushes into the picture, picks up a stray hair-pin flncidentally, still at- tached to the hairl and pleasantly ex- claims, You dropped something. Oh Murderl Shorty Cruzan's con- tribution to the conversation-and a fitting note on which to leave this touching little scene. But let's turn our attention to the stage, shall we? A dignified proces- sion is now mounting the steps. lt's the freshman class officers, led by president Bill Delfrates, with Charlie fstop me if you've heard this onel Aguar close on his heels. Winnie Mutch, our able treasurer is crossing the stage now from the far side and- excuse that rumbling- Cow-L Boy just came tripping flllll forth. She and Bill reversed the order this year-due to unavoidable circumstances, he sits on her lapl This is the same stage that sup- ported such rousing entertainment as our little 5 by 5 Enselman's Baby Snooks act with Daddy Hollowell in the annual Minstrel of 1940, and those simply terrific skits presented by the newly organized l'ettes. Will you ever forget the day Liz Indian Thurmon CSome nickname, eh, I told her not to cut her hair? got the giggles and took up the remaining five minutes of the program all by herself? Two weeks later Spence fDorisD, our favorite comedienne, made her debut on the stage quite successfully as Marryin' Sam in the Sadie Hawkins Day skit. Ohhh-what she did! flt was a big black cigar-and it was litl Need I say more?D Well, spring came soon, as spring inevitably will, and the increasing tempo of freshman antics slowed down to the charm and intrigue of soft looks and audible sighs. Birds twittered and hearts palpitated rapidly for secret lovers known to the individual alone. But we could guess when Ruthie Mey- er began making eyes at Melba Pot- ter's big brother , it was the thought of Hank Messer's band, not Carmen's voice, that was fanning the flame in her heart. Yes, midst trumpets and fanfare, it finally arrived. The thrill of a lifetime-the lunior - Senior Prornl And we, the freshmen class of 1940, were invited. There ensued much con- niving on the part of freshman girls and squirming on the part of freshman boys Knot to mention the upperclass- men. who quite suddenly found them- selves hopelessly entangled in our snares-Iokelll Among those in this sad state were such confirmed old bachelors fof that day, at leastl as Frank Slug Slagle and Iohn lug- head Marshall fwho, in recent years have changed their views to the ex- tent of openly declaring girls as their main interest in High School. Myl Myll The fact is we now have a regular ros- trum of bashful, backward, bachelor boys fdare you to say it fastlj that have gathered through the years. Ahhl Theirs is a tragic plight-to have missed the joy and happiness of knowing the fairer sex fjust think of the dough those jerks must have saved by nowf. Well, here they are, girls. Quit shovin', will ya'-the line forms to the right. CLASS OFFICERS President, Charles Agucxr Vice president, Wayne Foote Secretary. Charlotte Deem Treasurer. Ruth Meyer 22
