Sally is reminiscing: David is look- ing ahead. Compound the two mes- sages their thoughts reveal, and you've discovered the secret of a great nation, for undeniably, a nations strength lies with its youth. Turn back the pages of time, Sally, tell us about itl I. H. S. 1941 That was the year of slam-books and really fine 'lspecial assemblies . We were bewildered little freshmen then, stumbling from one thing to an- other with increasing amazement at this intriguing new worldwours to con- querl Those were carefree days- An excited mob of chattering, jab- bering, unsuspecting little freshies, their faces flushed with eagerness at what lay ahead flittle did they knowl was inching its way toward the inter- ior of ye olde auditorium. A stam- pede was never like thisll Far above the din of scraping feet, hearty greet- ing, pushing, shoving, bumping shoul- ders and elbows fto say nothing of hipsl, a persistent high-pitched voice was heard in a desperate attempt to hail a fellow classmate some two hun- dred students away. Who else but our own Shorty Holmes, attracting everyones attention but his confeder- ate in crime, Pretty-boy Shumaker. just behind him Bo Kumle was cling- ing protectively f?l to carrot-topped Barb Hopper. The four horsemen were holding their own not too many feet in the lead. These gay, giggling, georgeous gals ffiguratively speaking, of coursel included Charlotte fthe eld- est of six-or was it five-or is it four- well, anyhowl Deem, Pauline fthey call me giggles l Walihan, Ieanie- with the deep blue eyes-Wilkinson, and curvacious Maurita Cthat's her real namel Wessler. Inside, the hub-bub was even worse than out. Helter- skelter we dashed, regardless of whose feet were supporting us-our own or our neighbors Maggy Sevier and Frankie Reeve made a wild dash for a couple of unoccupied seats in the back of the auditorium flllll, and by some twist of fate landed precisely on the same spot. Then out of the calm and quietuia ghastly scream arose from one end of the jammed room. Ooooooo-me wittl' foot-you hurt me wittl' foot. Billy Drake stood spouting apolo- gies all over Donald f l'm nobody's baby -Tand no wonder-D Due, who was caressing the tortured toot- sie as if it were breakable-or al- ready broken fWilliam just doesn't know his own strengthl, Over in a far corner a scene such as this would inevitably be enacted: Act li Beulah Baker, eyeing Ieanie Fortner from a distance: Hey, chums, get a load of the latest-now that's what I call a hair-doll Nita Busey's dubious, Are you kidding? then followed by this bit of feminine logic: x'Shut yo' mouf, honey chile- you're just jealous.
