SENIGRS PRESENT I-IIT PLAY. MCNEIL, ALLAN TAKE LEADS IN CGMEDY, HWHAT A LIFE On March 13 and 14, forty eight Seniors, in two casts, presented What cr Life , under the direction of Miss Frances Lee Richeson. The plot re- volved around the well-known Henry -sl.-vw Aldrich and his frequent visits to the principal's office. Because of the wide difference be- tween the characterizations of the two casts, the effect of two separate plays was given. Both performances were well attended. Everyone who was in the play agrees that, although the practices were hard work and took up a great deal of time, they were lots of fun. How often the auditorium walls echoed with Take it againl , I can't hear youl , or No talking back stage , and when there was talking, the culprits were summoned forth for a lecture with, Cast, front stagel A touch of romance was added by the love affair between the secretary and the assistant principal. The love scenes, as can be imagined, were a source of amusement to the cast mem- bers at rehearsals. On the whole, the play was greatly enjoyed by every- one, both off stage and on. Although it is somewhat difficult for the mid-year Freshies to adjust them- selves to their new routine, this group of students soon became accustomed to regular high school life. Looking back over their two years' record in Iunior High, we found many achievements. One worthy of mention was the interesting pageant, America For All , staged at their graduating exercises. The patriotic theme was presented with Betty Freitag as the Spirit of America and Gloria Bentley as 'lColu1'nbia wit h l'Liberty , Peace , Iustice , and other ideals be- ing represented by other members of the Class. Betty Freitag and Boy White were the two students honored with the American Legion and Auxiliary awards. We fully expect these two students and their classmates, while in I. H. THIS YEAR President ELIZABETH THURMoN Vice-President MARTHA HAIVIM Secretary BETTY ROGERS Treasurer I WINIERED MUTCH For the first time in the history of I. H. S. We have a Freshman Girls' Chorus. . Due to the size of the Iunior Choir, the Freshmen girls were separated fromthis Choir to form an organization of their own. Here they have taken much interest in the activities engaged in by the Iunior and Senior Choirs as Well as having furnished several musical pro- grams of their own. They have proved their value to the other organizations by participating in the magazine sale and also by lend- ing a hand in the selling of tickets for our opera, The G-ondoliers . In this club the members receive ex- cellent instruction Which will enable them to continue their Work in the Iunior and Senior Choirs. The choral Work which they study is of the same four-part type that the members of the older clubs sing. I The musical activities of the next few years should bring out the ability of these songsters. 67 Pres. V. Pres. Sec. Ass't, Sec. Treas. Ass't. October 24 - Reclining Holland slaps make-up rattling down the street October 2-With good juggling and lousy jokes as a standard, Mr. DeMotte gave us an impressive hour this afternoon. The Freshmen went wild on the jokes. The rest of the student body just went wild. October 3-4 - Oh joy! Oh bliss! All the world seemed rosy this week-end. October 31 - Mr. Moore 83 school for a change and I just flit around for two whole days. - October 7 - Days of the old South were brought back to our imagination by the Old Plantation Singers. Memories of former Homecomings were also recalled and cries of- we want a homecom- ing -were prevalent. October 11 - My little utweet tweet was drowned out by the Illinois Symphony Orchestra this after- noon. It sort of hurt my ego. More inspiring was .4 the football team's successful conquest at Virginia. C19-147. The regular Friday special didn't fail us. CDoggone ith. October 17 - Even birds lose their memory. We did have an assembly but my poor little brain doesn't recall what it was. Would you call my lack of memory bad - or could it have been the assembly? October 18 - Oops! The foot- ball boys slipped again. Lin- coln gave us a 35-O licking, but there is still plenty of- fight left in the team. The spirit seems to be rising all the time. October 23-24 - The Metro- politan Opera hasn't anything on our high school chorus! Why? Because their annual opera, Gilbert and Sullivan's The Gondoliersn, gave us no end of pleasure. October 25 - Eureka! At last we see cr good home room m ovie. The picture was March of the Presidents. The stars werwthe Presidents. October 31-Harvest Day, Har- vest Day. Miss Richeson, Miss Sheppard, the Tettes all turn- ing in first class performances. And the team tied the strong Rushville eleven. And the pa- rade-I flew as high as I could and I couldn't see the whole thing. All in all it was a grand success! V November 1-l rested my wings today while the teachers attended school in Champaign. I need the rest after poking my beak into everything that has been going on around here. Eleven of my fellow classmates are also up there singing in state chorus. I wish I were there, but when my twittering does the deciding, I find myself resting-in lacksonville. November 5 - Election day-Democrats and Re- publicans are after each other, and the air is really blue-not a very good day for flying. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few black eyes tomorrow. 84 A very good program was presented this afternoon. An excerpt from the life of Abe Lincoln- Prologue to Glory -was nicely done. It's certainly a shame that Lane, Cohen, Alexander and some of the rest of our male main-line students don't have seats on the front row. November 6 - Fair and warmer-Ruffled feathers, but no black eyes. Maybe I won't have to go South after all. November 7 - Great geniuses! The Athens of the Middle-West really t u r n s them out. Mr. Brown, a local f college graduate, gave an in- teresting demonstration of mem- orizing numbers on dollar bills. The younger Heneghan boy seemed to have lots of money to give away, calling off num- bers right and left. The catch was, if he called your number, he got the dollar! November 11 - Brr - wrong again! I should have gone South a long time ago. First day of real winter' we have had. If it keeps up long, they'll find my wings frozen to me and I won't be able to strut up to get my diploma. We had a very interesting pro- gram this morning, patriotic in theme. L. K. Gilchrist talked on the Armistice and showed a movie on The Story of Our Flag . Amid snow flurries and a freez- ing wind the varsity tied the annual Armistice Day football game with I. S. D. 6-6. Was it ever exciting! , November 12 - Goodness - another assembly. Iust the kind of week I like, a little en- tertainment along with the work. A program of accordion music was presented with an added extra for the boys: one of the young ladies danced. December 3 - The girls were all excited tonightg William Campbell of the Canadian Royal Mounted talked to us about his adventures up North with the Eskimos. He said they had only two deliveries of mail in a year. I'm afraid it would be pretty hard on some of the offspring of this school. They might settle it by applying for wings like mine. December 5 - The Peoria Con- cert Band gave a very nice program this afternoon: they played several popular num- bers. If I don't learn how to whistle Down by the O-I-Ii-O , I'm going to to be put to shamep in fact, I won't even count around this school anymore. The varsity played basketball with Roadhouse tonight. We really gave them what they didn't want-a good beating. Score, 26-l7! December 7 - Another bas- ketball game with Murrayville on our own court. The boys are going to town. I bet if they gave me a chance I would really make these wings of mine clatter just like my teeth have been chat- tering. Well, the team went to Spring- ' field tonight to show Feitshans who was good. lt seems the main idea of the trip was dis- missed, lost, or stolen some- X where between here and Springfield. Anyway we lost 13-33. Ianuary 6 - Goodness mel Did l ever hate to go back to school? lt was cold and my feathers are a little bit thin. You ought to be honored to think that in this cold weather ' I would stay up here and write school chatter for you. Ianuary 7 - Boy, I'll bet you get tired of reading my basket- ball write-ups, same old thing every time. The boys played Ierseyville tonight on our floor and guess what? The score was 27-15 in OUR favor. Ianuary 10 -J Well, we're back into the swing of things again with our first assembly of the New Year. Iack Briggs, an ar- tist, was to give some im- promptu painting. Something happened and a man whose name my lame brain doesn't recall was the pinch hitter for him: he did a fine job. With a demonstration of a bachelor sewing buttons on a coat, he kept us all in stitches. The basketball team played I. S. D. tonight and the score was 26-19 in our favor. Ianuary 16 - Carl Maslowski broke the silence of a dull Week by talking on Ornithology. They're either practicing or playing all the time. They played in Winchester last night. We lost 40-15. I'm certainly glad I didn't fly over to that game as I had planned. Icmuary 18 - Still at it. The team played in Deca- tur last night and we lost again 37-23. Ianuary 24 - I-low nicel Grrrr. Semester exams- you know, before this week I thought school was all work and no play but now it's all work. If I don't pass I them I'll be here another year. I Icmuary 28 - And I thought I j had worries with examsl The basketball boys have to worry about losing games along with grades. They played in Rush- ville tonight and won 49-29. Very well done, I would say. February 1 - When Captain Cooley McDorment began his lecture this morning I thought he was going to talk about my clan. Much to my disgust he ended up by talking on air- planes. February 4 - Basketball seems to have gone pretty well up to now, but the boys are doing a little unnecessary fluttering. They should leave that to me. They played Pittsfield here to- night and lost 44-28. February 7 - Another movie on Territorial Expansion of the U. S. Very good if you like history, but otherwise stay away. Basketball, basketball. We played Brownstown here to- night and lost 47-26. February 11 - Hurrahl We won a basketball game. The first in weeks. The score was I. S. D. 30, l'ville 38. I hope we continue to win. February 14 - It's no wonder those boys have such a hard time winningg about all they do is play. They never get any rest. We played Clinton here tonight and lost 38-33. That's the hardest fighting on our boys' part I've seen in ages. February 18 - Have you ever seen Blanche Eades in a basketball suit? No? Boy, you have some- thing to look forward to. She and the l'ettes pre- sented a fine operating room scene this morning. It seems Blanche, alias I'ville , came through the operation with flying colors, but-we lost the Win- chester basketball game tonight 28-18. By the way that isn't my idea of flying colors. 86 February 19 - Lanphier from Springfield got trounced tonight when our team did some fancy jumping and shooting. The score? 33-20 in our favor. February 21 - We had some very good yodeling and accordion playing: this afternoon. Of course it doesn't compare with my twittering, but then I hate to brag. All bragging aside though, B. Fraunfelder, Sr., and his three children did a fine job. February 25 - Guess what? We beat the Ierseyville five tonight by a score of 28-23. February 26 - Doggone itl I talked, too soon. We lost to the Pittsfield five tonight by a score of 28-25. March 5 - Captain Frank Crilley entertained us with a talk on deep sea diving. How entertaining? March 10 - We had a gentle- man play something called music on bells. He also gave a lecture on those same bells. He didn't seem to know what it was all about, but then I have lapses of memory myself so I'm not one to chatter. March 13-14 - The two casts of Seniors really did justice to their play, What A Life . Rich- xx ard and Mac were both good N as Henry, though they were as N different as anything. I won- R der if our principal's office seems like that with teachers QL and students running in and E out all the time? Even better than I, and 5- that's saying a whole lot. The Iuniors presented the an- nual Prom Skit this afternoon. I might add that Vicki Cincis and lack Mathews look fine in burlap sacks. March 20 - Did I get hungry this afternoon? Please don't remind mel That movie on cit- rus fruit kept everyones mouth watering. March 21 - I'd better admit that 'from now on, and possibly before, I'm not responsible for what has been discussed. I just wrote it. May 5 - Goodness me, but that was a fine assembly. A lecture demonstration was given on liquid air by Iohn Sloan. He froze a banana so hard you couldn't break it. May 8 - The annual May Fes- tival came off this evening. It was very artistically and for- mally done. When I say for- mally, I do mean formally. I'ETTES, NEW ORGANIZATION PROMOTES S C H O O I.. SPIRIT! The newest and one of the most ac- tive organizations of I. H. S. is I'ettes. This group was organized in Septem- ber by Misses Louise Sheppard and Frances Richeson. The membership of the club consists of sixteen girls elected from the student body and in- cludes six seniors, 'five juniors, three sophs, and two freshies. Throughout the year very clever stunts were staged by the I'ettes. A great deal was added to our pep meets through their efforts. They appeared at our games dressed in attractive red and white outfits which added much to the atmosphere. Two outstanding events sponsored by, the I'ettes were Harvest Day and Sadie Hawkins Day. Harvest Day was held in October and was started with a pep meet followed by a parade and football game. A dance was held in the evening. In April, Sadie Haw- kins Day, with 'Lil Abner and Daisy Mae styles predominant, was enjoyed by everyone, Both celebrations were new in I. H. S. and the girls deserve much credit for their success. 92 FIGHTING CRIMSONS MAKE COMEBACK, ALL BUT FOUR RETURNING NEXT YEAR Coach Frank Walker was faced with the dual problems of no returning line- men and the absence of a quarterback. Perhaps the outstanding game of the year was with Urbana, the 1941 state runner-up. The I. H. S. cagers led most of the game but finally fell by six points. Another thrill came at the Winches- ter tournament. This year's team was the first Crimson team to reach the finals since 1925. Horace Stringham was elected cap- tain of the '40-'41 squad. Other return- ing lettermen were D. Hudson, Fry, and B. Hudson. Dysinger, Lynn, Nealon, Bradney, BHSHE Ketner, Day, and Cincis were new to the squad, Dysinger was high-point man with 152 to D. Hudson's 141. The Crimsons defeated Murrayville in the first round of the Regional Tour- nament but were nosed out by New Berlin in the semi-finals. The New Ber- lin team had won Z5 consecutive games. At the basketball banquet Darrell Fry was elected captain of the '41-'42 squad. The starting five will all return with the exception of Dysinger. The following boys received letters: Dy- singer, Ketner, Bradney, B. Hudson, Stringharn, Ery, D. Hudson, Day, Lynn, and Nealon. COACH RUSSELL SAREF GUIDES RESERVES THROUGH SUCCESSSFUL SEASCDN Coach Sarff had a big turnout at the first practice, but he lacked tall men. All of last year's veterans had gone to the varsity. However, he did pick fif- teen boys who were able to beat some of the bigger teams they played. No captain was elected, but Wayne Foote acted as captain most of the sea- son. The oddest game of the year was with I. S. D. The game went into three overtimes, and they were forced to call it a tie because the referee was too tired to finish. The following boys played in a ma- jority of the games: Foote, Rust, Sum- mers, G-raubner, Evemeyer, Young, Williamson, Birdsong, Edwards. MEMBERS TAKE PART IN INTERESTING 61 VARIED SPORT PROGRAM! ' Meeting on Monday and Wednes- day of each week, the G. A. A. mem- bers enjoyed an active sport program this year. Twenty-five girls under the capable leadership of Miss Dorothy Whitaker were members of the club. Early in the fall after the club officers were elected, the girls enjoyed a picnic and later in the year were entertained at several parties. A This spring some of the girls were privileged to attend the playdays in Beardstown and in Petersburg. The climax of the activities of the club was the presentation of the awards which the girls earned during the year. These awards are earned by acquiring points in various ways such as keeping daily health charts, participating in programs, and by at- tending meetings regularly. The first award is the numeral which is given for six hundred points, the second is the red and white requiring twelve hundred points. The letter I , stand- ing for Illinois, is given when eighteen hundred points have been earnedg and the highest, which is the map of our state, is given to any girl who has accumulated two thousand points. Qlzfif , QL m d.4.46.4 Although not so conspicuous as those of the boys, the girls' sports have nevertheless enjoyed popularity. This year, intra-class competition Was held in many sports. Those best liked in- doors Were basketball, volleyball, and relaysg outside in the spring, softball. 103 Another favorite of many Was the game of bombardment. ' As has been the custom for the last two years, instruction in both folk and social dancing was given for a short time. Very beneficial health charts were kept by the girls. These charts require the adherence to numerous health rules and are very helpful. Miss Doro- thy Whitaker Was the very capable instructor. Inclulging in a varied sports program, the girls enioyecl especially those pictured.
