DR. R. O STOOPS L The Jacksonville High School is dedicated to the youth of this community. Here a steadfast puhlic provides adequate equip- ment and excellent instruction to create the proper environment for mental and social growth. And it is all as free to our youth as the air they hreathe. l.et us here, as students, lay the foundation of sound scholar- ship and worthy character, with a firm conviction that, in this man- ner, we can create wealth which 'Old Man Depression cannot deplete. In no other way can we show ourselves so appreciative and So worthy ot' the sacrifices of time and money which a gen- erous community has invested in this school. Student citizenship of this type creates a school spirit which hest serves the present, and to which we can look hack, in the future, with genuine pride. R. O. STOOPS . . JOSEPHINE HITTE After recording Dramatic Club, Tri-Y, and Glee Club to Iosephines credit, we found that they were for a few years back. Ioddy re- turned to school this fall, but with no new activities. BAYARD HOPPER To look at him you would never imagine such peaceful activities- but look at what he told us. Glee Club, Choir, and parts in three operettasll lt couldn't be that Bayard would deceive us? JOHN HOPPER Surely you know Iohnnyl After seeing him display his talents in A Midsummer Night's Dream and several short plays, one might guess with reasonable accuracy that he was in Dramatic Club RICHARD HOPPER ls there a musician in the crowd? Oh yes, Fat comes ambling lazily to the front to claim this prodigious honor, A clarinetist, and a bass singer who charmed us all-that's Fat. ROBERT HOPPER Bob was a prominent member of the Football squad, class Presi- dent, and also Vice-President, member of Glee Club, Dramatic Club, in two operettas, and in National Athletic Scholarship Society. IDELLA HUDSON On investigation we found that ldella's skill with the basketball in G.A A. approximated that of her famous brother-and that, we tell you, is no mean achievement, I W a DORIS HUFF Not satisfied with taking five subjects, Doris was in Pep Squad, G.A.A, Glee Club, Y's Girls, Speech Club, and several operettas, not to mention holding offices in aforementioned clubs. ARTHUR HULL Despite the fact that Arthur had his skull a trifle bumped this fall- we assure you that he recovered. fNot fully enough to hand in a blank-yet he graduated with us all.J ROBERT HUSTED Fat went out for football for three years and was on the verge of success this year when he had an accident and couldn't play. Lavern handed in no blank and no picture-- hence the lack. LUCIE ELIZABETH SEEGAR Participation in two musical clubs at the same time is quite a feat, but Betty took it in her stride, and had time lett for Commercial Club. Zastrow, Young - OUR JUNIOR FRIENDS SOPHOMORE CLASS First RUWvBI'E'1lIl7'lll, Mutt-h, Nichols Second ROW'-flfllllllfll' The Class of 1938 started its Sophomore year by electing' Mary Frances Gaumer, Presidentg Eleanor Brennan, Vice-Presidentg lieatrice Nichols, Secre- taryg and Helen Mutch, Treasurer. Two representatives, a boy and girl, from each home room met with the officers and Miss Evans once a month in the class council. llere all class prob- lems were settled and ways ot' increasing' the treasury for later years in high school discussed. There seemed to be something' mysterious about the class because the council decided upon the magical way of raising money-to bring a inagician to Jacksonville High for a five-cent assembly. The class dues were twenty- five cents. In October all the Sophomores packed picnic suppers and went gaily out to Gravel Springs for a picnic. Everyone had a grand time and decided that it was a good way to start the year out right. ln writing a class history of this year we must not tail to mention that a Sophomore-Wintield Chinowith-was one til' the outstanding football players on the team. Perhaps it would be fitting' to say that tIhinny has been elected football captain for next year. The class president-.Vlary Frances Gauiner-has shown great possibilities in debating. ln fact, the whole class seems to be up and coming' and the Seniors wish them lots of luck. Contrary to custom, the play was bre- sented on .lune 2nd, the day before gratiuation, thus being a regular part of the Senior week activities. What happens when inexperienced young' men take over the inanagenient of a Girls school was cleverly revealed as The Charm School unfolded in the 6 . liantis of the following eiiaracters: Austin Bevans, portrayed by Dick Hartman, who, in the one-act play contests, won the distinction of being the best actor in the districtg David MacKenzie, liill Lucasg George lloyd, Pete Riggs, Tim Simb- kins, liayinonti Gordon, Homer Johns, ,lolin iiopperg Elise Melburn, Frances Wallsg Miss Hawes, MarU':ti'et Eilinrftong Miss Curtis Connie Kin-r' Sallx' iiovi , A N v ' .xv V ,kv M'l1'y Hempliillg Katherine llongiity, Isabel Stoobs: Muriel Stafford, Mar Nor- buryg Lillian, Wilma Ross. This group of girls really lived up to their name in supplying pep and enthusiasm at all our football and basketball games. This was a new thing' for high school and badly needed, for the school spirit had been steadily waning, and they made the students school-spirit conscious. Early in the basketball season red sweaters with white ls appeared, adding color and sparkle to this group. Meetings were held quite often for practice. Becky ltantz, Patty Norbury, Betty Brown, and Grace Wood were their Cheer Leaders. Only the girls who proved their interest by attending these meetings were members, for there were always some who were waiting' to be admitted. Towards the close of school a very novel idea was carried out in a pay assembly. A style show was cleverly presented, showing both new and old styles. These girls deserve a great deal of credit for what they have done. At many of them were there lu encourage the team. Even in the most bitter weather while many of us were litiggiitg' fires, they braved the cold to CVSYX gillllif come and cheer our boys. .leanne Rantz as president and Doris Hutt as secre- tary led this group very successfully. MAY FESTIVAL On May first, following the age old tradition, Mary Butler was crowned Queen of the May in a delightful ceremony in the auditorium. Preceding this event, the various musical organizations of the school under the direction of Miss Lena Mae Hopper presented an enjoyable and varied concert. The stage setting, typifying an outdoor scene, furnished an appropriate background for the charming ceremony. The Queen's coronation was heralded by gay May-pole and garland dances given by members of the different clubs. Her attendants, headed by Ann Spink, the Maid of Honor, were: Betty McClel- land, who had the distinction of being the first maid, Catherine Stevenson, Win- ona Cocking, Margaret Ellington, Frances Moxon, Louise Driver, Wilma Ross, Jane Dunlap, Catherine .lane Allen, Roberta Brubaker, Betty Trabue, and Mary Roach. These girls were all dressed in dainty pink formals, making a truly pic- turesque setting for the Queen and her Maid of Honor. Barbara Butler was crown-bearer, and Mary Roach and Miriam Lowery, pages. The Queen and Maid of Honor were respectively president and vice-presi- dent of Treble Clef and received their places by vote of the club. The maids were likewise chosen from the Junior and Senior members. The numbers sung by the Treble Clef were: 'tLove, Like the Dawn Came Stealing tCadmanJg Dawn CCurranlg Lift Thine Eyes tMendelssohnj. Forwards were liol'lWy Hamm, who led the scoring for the year, his favorite shot heing a left-handed hook which accounted for most of his pointsg and Elmer Lukeman, who, though a great long shooter, was also yalualile under the basket. During the first semester l.ynu Ferguson, one of the main-springs of the Crimson attack, played at forward, hut was eliminated when he hroke his collar hone. Another forward who played during the second semester was Alhyn Ketner. A fast man, he always contributed his share of points. This simple slogan tells the whole story of the .lack- sonville High School Intramural llepartment. Under the ahle guidance of Mr. J. M. Hollowell the work is carried on by a sports administration cluh, an organ- ization created last year. The department offers sports to any hoy in high school who cares to take part. The program includes team games such as touch-football, haskethall, hasehall, longhall, softhall, and volleyball, and indi- vidual sports such as tennis, ping-pong, golf, horse-shoes, punting, hasket- shooting, and riflery. Each Spring a class track meet is held, the classes competing against each other. Last year the Junior class won. All details are attended to by the sports cluh. The haskethall tournament is the feature of the winter season, a rather extensive schedule heing attempted. The greatest turnout of the year is always evident in this sport. The club members conduct and officiate all games and tournaments. The Officials Emhlem is awarded to those earning Soo points in So games or more The cluh also assists in conduct- ing grade school and David Prince ath- letics. 'limi the players a regular J is given for too points in participation. At the end of the year medals are given to the three graduating Seniors with the best record. PAGI i.l 'illl Y E'I'.
