CO-CAPTAINS Ralph Richardson Norwood Crawford 49- jacksonville High School opened its 1957 football season with a new head coach, Andy Hewlett, who proceeded to whip the squad into shape with a full-scale, full-uniform scrimmage on the first day of practice. Many of the lettermen out for the squad remembering the 1956 season, couldn't quite understand Coach Hewlett's idea of such a terrific workout on the very first day. But, as they were soon to find out, only hard work produces success And, success is what the Cardinals enjoyed during the '57 season. Matter of fact, it was the most successful season the school has had in several years. Coach Hewlett, who brought his tremendous coaching knowledge from Burgaw to help get the Cardinals back on the winning trail, quickly singled out his returning lettermen and began to build a respectable eleven. Shortly thereafter, Richardson and Crawford were elected co-captains by their teammates. And, there couldn't have been a finer selection. Crawford turned in some of the most sparkling performances of the year on offense and few games on defense. Richardson was death to opponents from his de- fensive backfield berth, despite his lack of size. Northeast Conference coaches, in their annual meeting after the football season, elected both boys to the All-Conference team, along with Charles Pulley, johnny Waters, and Freddie Parsels. Pulley, Waters and Crawford were selected for first string berths. Coach Hewlett shifted his squad almost as much as he did his offense. He opened the season against Wallace-Rose Hill. But, by the time the season ended against a strong Washing- ton High School eleven, several boys were playing in both the backfield and line that weren't counted on much at the beginning of the season. The most notable of this group was hard-running Johnny Waters, who came into his own about midseason and proceeded to rip holes in opposing lines from his fullback position. An- other boy who did a good job in the backfield after playing the first of the season at cnd was Vic Garrison. In the forward wall, who can forget the fabulous playing of such stalwarts as Charlie Pulley, Hugh Burton, Billy Ven- ters, Jim Williams, Bobby Sells, Dick Burkhart and Billy Crouch? When the season ended, Jacksonville High had victories over Greenville and Roanoke Rapids, the first conference wins since the school became a member five years ago, Swansboro and Vanceboro. Four losses to New Bern, Kinston, Washing- ton, Wallace-Rose Hill and a tie with Tarboro, evened the season at 4-4-1. However, with any kind of luck the Birds could have ended the season with a 7-2 mark. Only the bounce of the ball ai- lowed Wallace and Kinston to beat the Cardinals, and Tar boro. Page Jacksonville's Jayvee team went undefeated during the 1957 season, lending support to the theory that in 1958, the Cardi- nals will have one of the best-if not the best-team in the Northeast Conference. WALLACE-ROSE 18 - JACKSONVILLE 6 Jack Cohen romped 80-yards with the opening kickoff to give the Cardinals a brief, but happy lead in the opening game of the year. However, Wallace's Willie Piner and Jimmy King, proved the difference as Wallace pulled the game out of the fire with their fine runs. Offensive standouts in this game for the Cardinals were Philip Simpkins, Norwood Crawford, Johnny Waters, Gary Smithwick and Jack Cohen. On defense, it was Ed Penuel, Bobby Sells, John Lowe, Hugh Burton, Vic Garrison and Ralph Richardson who excelled. JACKSONVILLE 15 - GREENVILLE 6 This was the Cardinals first Northeast Conference win in five years of competition. During the years, the Cards lost 24 straight conference games. So, it was one of the sweetest vic- tories of the year. Freddie Parsels scored all I3 points for J.H.S. However, it was a team effort which won. Norwood Crawford, Jack Cohen, Moe Simpkins, and Johnny Waters aided speedy Freddie Parsels on offense, while Bobby Sells, intercepted a pass and returned to the Greenville one, to set up the first score. Ed Penuel, Vic Garrison, Ralph Richardson, and Jim Stingley were bright light on defense. JACKSONVILLE I2 - TARBORO 12 Freddie Parsels scored one TD for the Cardinals on an 80- yard run on a pitchout from quarterback Jack Cohen and Moe Simpkins tallied from nine yards out to account for Jackson- ville's scoring in this game. However, an 85-yard kickoff re- turn by Cohen was an exciting play despite the fact the Cards couldn't captalize on the beautiful run. Ed Penuel's recovery of a Tarboro fumble set up the touchdown scored by Simp- kins. Timmy Eason, John Lowe, Lattie Warren, Billy Venters, Rip Van Camp, Jim Stingley, Billy Crouch and Charley Pul- ley were stalwarts in the Cardinals' line all night. NEW BERN 25 - JACKSONVILLE 6 This game went according to form. New Bern was supposed to win and they did with a beautifully coached squad. How- ever. Jacksonville had its share of stars on the field, too. Dan Edison played his best game of the year at quarterback late in the second half. He directed a I9-yard gallop after taking a handoff from Edison. KINSTON 21 - JACKSONVILLE 15 Tough breaks and a mid-season lull allowed Kinston to whip the Cardinals in the fifth game of the year, but before Page Eighty-One gg:-Q.. the game ended the Red Devils had seen enough of Jackson- ville for one night. Jack Cohen scored for J.H.S. on a 25-yard run off the option play. Ralph Richardson blocked a Kinston punt in their end zone and Vic Garrison fell on the ball for the second Cardinal score. John Lowe smashed enemy half- back Howard Dawkins down in his own end zone for a Cardinal safety. Gary Smithwick, Ralph Richardson, who did everything but sell tickets, Billy Venters, Billy Crouch, John Lowe, Charlie Pulley and Lattie Warren were tops on defense. JACKSONVILLE 20 - VANCEBORO 6 This was Norwood Crawford's game as he scored all three touchdowns on an 85-yard punt return, a 48-yard scampe: from scrimmage and a one-yard plunge. However, Dan Edi- son threw the key block to shake. Crawford loose on the 85- yard jaunt. His knife-like block took out two Red Raiders. Lattie Warren, Jim Fullwood, Billy Venters, Jimmy Chadwick, Bob Eisenman, John Lowe and High Burton excelled on de- fense. JACKSONVILLE 27 - SWANSBORO 0 iHomecoming Game! The Cardinals ran up their biggest score of the year in whipping undermanned Swansboro in the annual homecoming tilt. But this wasn't a one man show. Four Cardinal backs all shared the scoring. Norwood Crawford, Moe Simpkins scored on a two-yard blast and Gary Smithwick slanted off tackle and 17 yards into pay dirt. To add spice to his excellent de- fensive skills, Ralph Richardson kicked three of four extra points. JACKSONVILLE I2 - ROANOKE RAPIDS 0 Fullback Johnny Waters, quarterback Norwood Crawford, halfbacks Vic Garrison and Freddie Parsels and defensive aces Ralph Richardson, Hugh Burton and Gary Smithwick led the Cardinals in this relatively easy victory over Roanoke Rapids, giving the Cards their second win against two losses in con- ference play. Crawford scored both touchdowns on two-yard plunges. WASHINGTON 26 - JACKSONVILLE 0 lt took nine games and a very good Washington squad to blank the Cardinals. Washington's Pam Pack did what no other team was able to do through the tough nine game sche- dule-whitewash the Birds. Several brave goal-line stands by Jacksonville's strout linemen saved at least two other scores in the cold, rainy season's finale. Norwood Crawford, Johnny Lowe, Ralph Richardson and Hugh Burton were the stand- outs in the game. Crawford's interception of three Pam Pack passes was instrumental in holding the score down too. Y I Y - . , . . . . . , , . . . . . . , Class I-hstor We the graduating class of 1958 began our educational adventure in the fall of 1945 It was the beginning of a completely new world for us We felt deep wonder for the new events happening around us Just what was this thing called school' Our predecessors had left an impression in our undeveloped mmds that school was such a dreadful place to stay all day away from Mama' Yes that first year was a strange one We came to school for the first time in our lives During our first year there were so many new thmgs introduced to us We finally learned that school wasn t so bad after all We settled down and began learning to read and write We learned we couldnt get up and walk around and talk to all our little friends That was the biggest step we took during that first ycar learning to get along with so many other little children and learning to let the other per son have his way once in a while We started paving a way for our educational highway when we began reading writing arithmetic and working together We didnt realize at that time what an important stage it was in our lives Later on wc found that these years were the formative years of our education Some of us arc glad that we paid attention to our teachers Others wished they had' We finished the first three grades easily lt seemed im possible for we were graded on everything from writing and singing Cand singers we were'J to atomic energy We had at least a dozen grades on the report cards that we proudly displayed to our parents How proud we were to exhibit our genius' When the fourth grade came m view school was again changing Health was added to our schedule and geography Came IHIO our lives We began to realize the value of a good nights studying It was a little more difficult as we gradually began our extensive studies The English language was be gmnmg to be clearer than it had been in the previous years of introduction The fifth grade was nearing The time came for us to take a seat m the fifth grade We were gradually climbing the ladder and hoped soon to be on the top step The frfth We had the cleanliness banner which if won was kept for a week and the winners bragged to the other classes about it That is until it was lost again' These little thmgs such as the weekly banner and the party at the end of the year to the class with the most wins all these things are part of our memories of grammar school The fifth grade introduced us to history North Carolina was in the spotlight for that year We began research for collectmg material for our North Carolina Scrapbook We had so much fun compiling it' We feared we would never get all that maternal but in the final steps we came out with better grades than we deserved' We had a great deal of fun doing it The fourth and fifth grades played a most important part in our twelve years of school We experienced joy des parr, dtscouragement, hope and began to feel the sense of responsrbihty These years will never be forgotten but al ways remain in the memories of the 1958 graduating class of J H S The summer ended and we were in the sixth grade at the httle school We proudly displayed our science projects to the underclassmen, and freely gave them advice for the coming years It was in the sixth grade that our class became divided Some of us were sent to the high school, never to return to Thompson again, and some of us remained at Thompson A little rivalry was displayed bu that was soon forgotten and we still enjoyed seeing our friends when we had the op portunity Yes, the days of yesterday seem only a short while ago We pause to look back on those first six years, half of our school was gone We were silly, foolish, very prim, and even sometimes selfish We laugh now at the mischievous things our undeveloped mmds thought about These years were the carefree days of yester year Our seventh grade brought us to some of the nardest work yet At least that was the thought of many Never will be forgotten that big thick book called American Demo cracy That was the beginning of some real history for us This was the year that we had two teachers Gee, that was something to boast about to the younger children This year y as the vear that all of us were at the high school and we so wist ully that we could be in high school We toiled through the seventh grade, thmkmg that never again would there be any grade so hard as this one. The summer of the seventh grade came and all at once we realized that high school was just a short while away We felt we needed to dig or we would never make a go of it in high school The eighth grade came with plenty of excitement in store for us We did a much more Intelligent scrapbook of North Carolina We went to chapel programs just like the high school did' We planned our Raleigh trip with much vigor and enthusiasm We had a thrilhng eighth grade year Xvc successfully toured Raleigh with all the dignity in the world The close of the eighth grade was quickly coming We registered for high school Some of us taking algebra and others takmg the General Math course We were so full of excitement that we just couldnt wait until the mnth grade came But we did Our eighth grade graduation was one of the most solemn activities we had ever attended We were told that it was only the beginning of our education just the first step toward a fuller busier future This made us wonder what in the world we had been domg for the past eight years Now we see how rnght the speaker had been It was just the first step The summer passed and we assembled to gether in the high school auditorium with pounding hearts trembling hands and found that high school was so different We had so many teachers even a homeroom teacher Gads how did they expect us to do this without getting all con fused? We finally got the hang of high school after so many times of turning left when it should have been right going upstairs when we should have been downstairs and heaven help us if we ran into one of the superior seniors That was the last thing to do' We settled down and began to take part in the school activities Electmg class officers electing student council rep resentatives and doing so many things such as standing when the seniors marched down the aisles at chapel every Friday We knew that someday maybe wed get the chance to march down the aisles with every other class standing for us The freshman year was one of the most hilarious ones eyer Our sophomore year was much better We knew the We had a better choice of selective subjects and of course biology was a choice whether we wanted it or not We were a little wary of dissecting animals We preferred to stand back and watch someone else do that kind of stuff Wed never get through with that course Well we did We did and we dissected everythmg that was in the course Everyone for himself We shivered through the biology series hoping life wouldn t be quite so dangerous from then on Our Junior year came, packed with so much to do We had the junior Senior Prom to prepare that year We were surely going to make this the best ever We had a serious time with our junior float for the Homecoming Parade Never had we been so serious minded Our junior Play Father Knows Best was a tremendous success and ll was a gala time for the juniors We were very busy people just thinking that the next year we would be seniors was enough to consume a tremendous amount of our thoughts At lastl' We trod the halls of dear ole jayville Hn as semors Dignity was the theme of all thmgs Yes we were the seniors at last We will have the junior Senior given to us this year We have the thrill of walking down the aisles as the others stand We enjoyed producing the Senior Play We selected our superlatives We got our class rings much to the sorrow of the other classes for we proudly and un hesitantly showed off our new possessions We began our plans for the Senior trip Cuba being our hopeful destination Selhng magazines helped and also the Christmas card sale We look forward to the senior trip, which we will take the week after we graduate and above all the stanzas of Pomp and Circumstance as the graduating class of 1958 assemble together for graduation exercises We shall have spent twelve of the most important years of our hves upon graduatron These years will only be for gotten with the ceasing of existence What the future holds for us-who knows? We all wish for success and happiness We the Senior Class of 1958 extend our thanks to our parents without whom this would have been nmpossrble and to those teachers who have helped to make our paths through school a learning process and to all associated we gratefully say, Thank you for all the thmgs you have done for us We hope to be as impressive as you have been to us HISTORIAN Pat Evans . 9 5 u n . - - - ' ' ' ' ' . y I .
