Page finir We enjoy assembly Three years ago our student council was organized. One of the first projects they undertook was to sponsor assembly programs. This was made possible by a fee charged each student at the beginning of the school year. This year we were entertained by a wide variety of programs, some humorous, some educational. Page five Page six ( J4rt l t i Accept responsibility School assistants play a very important part in the life of every school. Here at Roanoke it is very evident. The clean halls and classrooms, the delicious frag-rance of food, and the kids departing and arriving on time are proof of their importance. We, the Senioi ' Class of 1955, wish to express our thanks to the many people who have made our school days better days. We thank our teachers, especially Mr. Nicholas, who was our sponsor through high school ; Mr. Hinton, who has offered us guidance throughout our school days, and Mrs. Hudson, who has patiently directed both of our class plays and been our yearbook advisor. Page twenty-seven Senior Class History In the year 1943 A.D. 24 little darlings set out on a new and exciting experience β€” school. Our teacher, Miss Kemp, taught us readin ' , ritin ' , and ' rithmetic. Her successor the following year was Miss Ramey, who taught us more about the 3 R ' s and helped us along to Room 3. There waiting for us was Mrs. Williams who drilled us on our multiplication table. This year was supplemented with a few minor love affairs. In the 4th grade, we spent half of our time quarreling with one another while Mrs. Walters spent the other half handing out punishments and teaching us the rules of good behavior. Mrs. Fulhart showed us how to work with fractions and helped us make a map of the United States from different printed materials, in the fifth grade. Our last year on the grade side was spent under the leadership of Mr. Kitt, who taught us Doctor Doolittle. Page tiventy-eight After graduation from the sixth grade we moved from the grade side to the higli school side, where we spent our first few days trying to figure out which room was which. We chose Miss Michels for our sponsor for the seventh and eiglith grades. The most memorable event of this period was a hay ride. (Need I say more?) After many years of hard worlc we had at last made it β€” we were in high school ! For our sponsor we chose Mr. Nicholas who is still with us, bless his little heart. We toiled many hours selling taffy, magazines, Christmas cards, and school ties. We also pro- duced two plays and sponsored the Junior-Senior Reception. As a reward for our labor and for our years of good behavior, came our long-anticipated trip to Washington, D. C, and New York City. Graduation left us with many pleasant memories and a feeling it had all been worth while. No, three years of enjoyment and a Httle work is what Pete Smith and Butch Nine will t ell you, as they have held the position for three years. Page fifty-seven Surprisin ' Stonewalls Runner-Up in Sectional Leaxe it up to Roanoke to come up with something:! Roanoke ' s β–  ' Surprisin ' Stonewalls did just that by coming from a mediocre 10-10 season, to runner-up in the sectional. In doing this the Stone- walls avenged two earlier season defeats with a win over Lancaster 55-51 and over Union 54-49. In the iinal game it looked as though the Stonewalls had come up with enough to go all the way. They led Huntington Township until the last two minutes, but fell behind to lose 44-38. Three of this year ' s team made the all-tourney team, Dave Welker and Danny Markley placed on the first team, and Wavne Red McClure made the second team. I ' ll ye Hixty Coach Shawhan ' s Fourth Year at RHS During four years of capable coaching, Mr. Bob Shavvhan has estab lished a very enviable record for himself. He has guided the Stonewalls to two county baseball championships, a county tourney championship, a county conference championship and a county tracK championship. Twice under his leadership the Stonewalls have been runners-up in the sectional. His overall basketball record is 60 wins and 33 losses. Page sisiy-ove r Β« j-si A ' ' ( . .Ml. .McPheiien. coach. In addition, it encouraged good sportsmanship. Track 1954 The 1954 track .season came and went with the Stonewalls winning one of three regular meets and finishing a very close second in the county meet. In- dividual fir.st places in the county meet were: Wayne McClure, 220-yard dash and shotput; Jim Crawford, mile run ; and Tom Truitt, 440-yard dash. Saxmuri Staff Well, here it is, the 55 Saxmuri ! We ' ve tried to bring to you the highlights of this year in pictures and words. The editors of the Saxmuri are Pete Smith and Gerry Kaufman who attended the Indiana High School Journalism Institute at Indiana University last sum- mer. While at I.U. Pete and Gerry designed and made a dummy of the 55 Saxmuri which was second in its division in the state. The engravings of this year ' s Saxmuri were made by the Indianapolis Engraving Company, which also took care of the covers and printing. The pictures were taken by RS M Studio of Bluffton. Student Council The Student Council of 1954 and ' 55 started its sessions September 22 un- der the leadership of Mr. Dinius. The members meet on Tuesday every other week. Among the many ques- tions brought before the group were the programs for next year, the fan Inis for ball games, and changes in the school cafeteria. Sunshine Society The Sunshine Society has really lived up to its name this past year by spreading- sunshine to those not only hi need but to the whole student body. Among the many things done to spread this happy feeling were Smile Week, a basket for the old folks home, and the Sweetheart Dance. Page secenty-one Cho rus Pnrje xeventy-ttvo The choir under the direction of Mr. Nicholas has done much to make RHS a better school. They have sung: before the PTA, the student body, and at class plays. They have also been working hard sponsoring two concerts each year to buy new robes. The band and Band Parents Association have sponsored many worth while projects hoping to get new uniforms in another year. Page seventy-four MR. DURFLINGER Eight years ag ' o when Mr. Durflinger came to Roanoke the band consisted of eleven members. Now the band has a total of 35 members, and 6.3 students are taking pri- vate lessons from Mr. Dur- flinger. From the time a student begins band lessons until he reaches the big band he goes through two smaller bands, both of which have been organized by Mr. Durflinger to aid in the training of his students. Band Here at RHS we have a group of grade-side stu- dents known as the Jr. Band. These are the people who are responsible for the odd noises gen- erated in the music room. In all sincerity we realize that these kids are learning and deserve a pat on the back for their rapid progress. Page seventij-lice CORN COB CLUB The boys ' 4-H Club under the sponsorship of Mr. Crum en- joyed many achievements again this year. The boys won a seal for their charter for having 92% completion. Other awards won by the club were the Grand Champion steer, Reserve Cham- pion dairy calf, and the Grand Champion Showman. M GIRLS 4-H Everyone who competed in 4-H entered projects in the County Fair. Judy Taylor ' s craft project and Karen Williams ' s dress were selected for State Fair. In the Senior Dress Revue Judy Eisenhut and Ann Stabler were chosen in the top ten. Judy ' s dress went to the State Fair and Ann ' s dress was chosen reserve alternate. Mrs. William Smith was our capable leader. The Importance of Being Young The Junior Play, The Importance of Be- ing- Young was given March 19, 1954. The setting was Overland, a small coeducational college to which come Freddie Cooper, the famous former child movie star, and his bodyguard, Tugger MacCoy. Freddie is a heel, and instead of becoming the most pop- ular boy in college, he becomes the most dis- liked. He interferes in the romance of Kit and Amy, and causes Kit to lose his scholar- ship. They plan a kidnapping which back- fires into a merry mixup. The story goes that Paw Belsnickle was a man with a problem β€” rather six problems in the form of six unmarried daughters. Maw had just laid down the law and told him that he must find husbands for them. So he grabbed the shotgun off the wall and decided to wing them and then pick out the buckshot, but the gals objected to his idea. About this time Ronald Maxwell and his Aunt, tourists, had car trouble and were forced to stay over night, so Paw decided to start a feud and wing the stranger. In the excitement, Paw forced Ronald to the altar, but just in the nick of time he is rescued. However, Paw does manage to marry off a couple of his problems before the final curtain.
