19 THE BLACKBOARD 54 DEDICATION We Seniors speak of our success as if it were due to our own planning and work. It is about this time in life when one first thinks of his ac- complishments. This could lead to an over worked ego and a false sense of pride. On reflection, we find that someone other than ourselves has been at the helm on this maiden voyage. We find the skipper-much to our amazement and pleasure-has been our parents who have taken out of our paths the cares of life. The time has come when we would like to prove to the grand people named below that they have been wise and thoughtful. We dedicate this JACKSON TOWNSHIP BLACKBOARD to Our Parents. 19 THE BLACKBOARD 54 THE CHALLENGE TO ALL HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS OF 1954 .l. This is the atomic age. We do not know what the next few years will bring to usp whether this great source of energy will be converted to intelligent use for the promotion of human welfare, or whether it will be used for the destruction of mankind. It is for the future generation to decide this crucial issueg and you are that future generation. Do you have the strength of character and the understanding to make a valuable contribution to the right solution of this great problem? To you, the high school graduates of 1954, we look for wise and cour- ageous leadership through the years ahead. Scientific knowledge and progress is on the march. It can lead us down the rocky road to destruction, or it can lift us to the highest pinacles of human achievement and success. It is you and your generation that must decide the course that it will take. Your generation faces the greatest of all challenges, but the gener- ations following you will face still greater ones. This is just the beginning. I fervently pray that you will not let the progress of these times pass you by. Stay in front. Be the much needed leaders who can direct these events so they will be a boon to man and not his destruction. You will need great wisdom to do this, and you cannot get that wis- dom by standing on the side lines. You have a mighty job to to. You must be very busy. You must learn many things. You must study hard and long. Study human relations that you may have a better understanding of your fellow man. Study science that you may be able to interpret scien- tific developments and direct them into channels that will be beneficial to humanity. Study political science that you may have a better under- standing of the government of people and of the people's governments. Study languages that you may be a citizen of the world and better under- stand world wide problems and be able to make some contributions to their solutions. Study the arts that your lives may be richer and your talents may enrich the lives of others. Above all study God and strive to understand why you are here and what your obligations and respon- sibilities are to your Creator and the Creator of all mankind and all things. These are big tasks but they must be done. Be not dismayed. You have already demonstrated ability to meet them in progressing this far. You have made a strong beginning. You can now see some of the oppor- tunities that are open to you. I believe in you and know that you have the courage to approach them without trepidation and avail yourselves of their offerings. My congratulations and sincerest best wishes go with you. Alvin D. Baylor 4
