It is about this time in life when one first thinks of his ac- complishments. This could lead to an over worked ego and a false sense of pride. On reflection, we find that someone other than ourselves has been at the helm on this maiden voyage. We find the skipper-much to our amazement and pleasure-has been our parents who have taken out of our paths the cares of life. The time has come when we would like to prove to the grand people named below that they have been wise and thoughtful. We dedicate this JACKSON TOWNSHIP BLACKBOARD to Our Parents. This is the atomic age. We do not know what the next few years will bring to usp whether this great source of energy will be converted to intelligent use for the promotion of human welfare, or whether it will be used for the destruction of mankind. It is for the future generation to decide this crucial issueg and you are that future generation. Do you have the strength of character and the understanding to make a valuable contribution to the right solution of this great problem? To you, the high school graduates of 1954, we look for wise and cour- ageous leadership through the years ahead. Scientific knowledge and progress is on the march. It can lead us down the rocky road to destruction, or it can lift us to the highest pinacles of human achievement and success. It is you and your generation that must decide the course that it will take. Your generation faces the greatest of all challenges, but the gener- ations following you will face still greater ones. This is just the beginning. I fervently pray that you will not let the progress of these times pass you by. Stay in front. Be the much needed leaders who can direct these events so they will be a boon to man and not his destruction. You will need great wisdom to do this, and you cannot get that wis- dom by standing on the side lines. You have a mighty job to to. You must be very busy. You must learn many things. You must study hard and long. Study human relations that you may have a better understanding of your fellow man. Study science that you may be able to interpret scien- tific developments and direct them into channels that will be beneficial to humanity. Study political science that you may have a better under- standing of the government of people and of the people's governments. Study languages that you may be a citizen of the world and better under- stand world wide problems and be able to make some contributions to their solutions. Study the arts that your lives may be richer and your talents may enrich the lives of others. Above all study God and strive to understand why you are here and what your obligations and respon- sibilities are to your Creator and the Creator of all mankind and all things. These are big tasks but they must be done. Be not dismayed. You have already demonstrated ability to meet them in progressing this far. You have made a strong beginning. You can now see some of the oppor- tunities that are open to you. I believe in you and know that you have the courage to approach them without trepidation and avail yourselves of their offerings. My congratulations and sincerest best wishes go with you. Alvin D. Baylor 4 19 THE BLACKBOARD 54 BACCALAUREATE SERVICES May 3rd, 1953 ADVANCE METHODIST CHURCH 2:00 P. M., C. S. T. A person or corporation to whom property is legally committed in trust, to be either for benefit of specified individuals or for public uses. According to Webster's Universal Dictionary. The Trustee is, next to the Advisory Board, the lowest paid ofiicial, in the State. He is a one man Township School Board. Responsible, for the hiring of all teachers in his schools, getting your children to school on time, health of children in school, parent teacher relations, student teacher relations, and providing supplies for his school. Your Trustee is the overseer of the poor, ready to furnish food, shelter, clothing, and fuel to the needy. He is interested in the welfare of his neighbors. Trustees are responsible for harmony in their Township. He must fur- nish complete fire protection, iron out differences between groups, towns, and organizations, without showing any partiality. Your Trustee is responsible for large sums of your tax money. He must foresee the amount of money needed for a year ahead. He must keep his tax rate as low as possible yet meet many obligations. He must keep within his published budget. He must receive the greatest value possible from your tax dollars. Trustees are always open to criticism, as no one can please every one. He profits and welcomes all constructive criticism. Your questions are his, your problems are his. It has often been said, everyone should be Trustee for one term. Truer words have never been spoken. As for the present Jackson Township Trustee and Advisory Board we consider it a pleasure to have served you these three years. Our association with patrons, students, and teachers has been very pleasant, your cooperation has been beyond all expectations. We feel honored that our patrons have seen fit that we be the group to start the long needed new Consolidated School Building. We also say thanks to Dr. Herman B Wells and his mother in making the school site possible for The Granville Wells School of Jackson Township. John E. Mr. Willizini Illliiflllilll, UNSEEN HARVESTS From any educational program, the child will acquire ideas and atti- tudes about himself and others. These are woven into a pattern of life. They may be true or false, healthy or morbid. Yet, the various develop- mental stages are left largely to chance, and this is not as it should be. The learner's life in the Jackson Township Elementary School is heavily invested with success and failure, pride and shame. Thus unseen harvests rest in the pupil-teacher relationship. These feelings, judgments, praises, blames, and such are charged with great responsibility. A child's possessions are the sum total of all that he can call his. The possibilities are both constant and changeable. In the process of grow- ing up, the child adds, assimilates, and integrates within himself what he deems essential and authentic. He renounces what he feels is Uunessential, strange, and harmful. There is a continuous impact between the child and the flow of ex- periences involved in the process of living and learning at school. He per- ceives, interprets, accepts, resists, or rejects as he recognizes his limita- tions and does what he learns with his resources. The truth that heals hurts for the time. The Jackson Township Elementary School accepts and welcomes your child, allowing him to be natural and affording him opportunity to learn in an environment suited to' his maturity level. Each teacher accepts the challenge that meaningful education should be directed toward the devel- opment of the child's real or potential self into a happy and useful citizen- Ship- Kenneth Fletcher 7 R D 5 4 HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS 19 THE HLACKBOA harf r tlilsou Bowan ' H' grin. His friendly way, and punctuality, Has made him known in our locality. He has a certain quiet way, And it's basketball he loves to play. We all do know him as a friend, Who could it be, other than Ben. A classmate who's fun to know, Get Phyllis to talk and the words flow. She's made her plans, so bright and true, The main one's Keith, in his Navy blue. His favorite pastime is teasing, And to his friends he is pleasing. Don's plans for the future may be hazy, But we aren't worried, 'cause he isn't lazy Describing her is ea pleasant task, Because she's such a likeable lass. One could say she's sociable, intelligent, neat But we just say, Connie can't be beat. Many a serious thought it seems, It's a good thing of which he dreams, It's sports, not girls, he thinks about, Yes, it's Jimmie, without a doubt. His winsome smile is widely known, And by girls especially, But we must say Joe's also shown, His daresome driving ability. To serve the Lord, Is Jessie's first aim. And then her daughter, Pam is her name. Bill is a likeable fellow, And sure is full of fun. His car is where to find him, A black Dodge is the one. 16 THE BLACKBOARD 54 Her laughter comes easy, To her life is fun. So Lucy, be sure to share it, With the right one. He has fun at every turn, Even as he strives to learn. Jim Neal is the one to know, When your spirits are way down low. You wouldn't say he's the brainy kind, But of Jim Pratt we do find, His nature cheerful, his attitude right, Especially for stirring up fun at night. There is rarely much that he will say, Although there's a lot on his mind, But you will find about his day, Sonnie makes the most of his time. Our best phone operator, But not for long, 'cause you see, A very happy farming wife, Is what Mary Lou shall be. She's sweet and petite, She does honor to our class. We are quick to claim her, Patricia is the lass. She dearly loves to sing and dance, And she dreams of her big romance. To a hope of success she does hold, So to Jeanie, we wish fortunes untold. He has a very open mind, Thinks of girls some of the time. Still, he wants to increase his knowledge, Bill Weber plans to go to college. He dearly wishes there was a way, That all of his life could be a play. He may find a way, we don't doubt, Yes, it's Mickey we're speaking about. 17 -Jessie Gregory 19 THE BLACKBOARD 54 SENIOR MEMORIES Mr. Herman Broshar invited the class officers out to his house on August 25, for the purpose of selecting the Annual Staff. The National Honor Society, in its second year at Jackson Township High School, has tried to continue its influence by establishing the follow- ing high professional aims and goals for the school: an enthusiasm for good scholarship, an encouragement of a desire for students to render service to the school and in the community, a stimulus to the student to observe and practice those acts of others that develop strength of character, and an encouragement to the student to continue his learning and his education. To be eligible for membership, a senior must have no more than 5 C's with at least 5 A's in solid subjectsg a junior must have no more than 4 C's and at least 4 A'sg and, a sophomore must have no more than 2 C's and at least 2 A's. After a student's scholarship record has been checked, he is then judged on character, leadership, and service. ln an impressive ceremony, the BLACKBOARD Staff presented an Honor Plaque to the Honor Society. Each year, the senior whose four- year academic average has been the highest will have his or her name en- graved upon it. Several assembly programs were presented by members ol' the Honor Society and the Salvation Army Drive was directed by this group. The induction ceremony for new members was held in the Methodist Annex in April. The parents of the members and the alumni members were special guests. On November 22 the FHA and SSS gave a minstrel at the Advance Gym. Thanksgiving baskets were distributed to seven families in the town- ship and the lf'HA-ers with the Sunshine girls as their guests went caroling on December 22. Afterwards refreshments and a grab bag were enjoyed. The girls are planning a tea for their mothers in January and also a farewell party for the seniors in April. A top-notch program has been planned and carried out with all the girls working hard to meet all the re- quirements to become an honor chapter again. Last year Jackson became an honor chapter in their first year. The club is proud to know that this is an honor that only a very few clubs have attained in their first year. Were very proud that the boys won iirst place on their exhibit on farm safety this year. The exhibit showed a figure, lying in bed, Wrapped in bandages, illus- trating the effects of a bout with a corn picker. A skeleton in a cotlin warned all who looked at the exhibit of the dangers in farming. A revolving center display used miniature farm implements to show how farm accident are caused and the way to prevent the accident. At the back of the exhibit were pictures which the boys had made themselves showing how accidents occur. The farm safety exhibit was on Harry lVIartin's Purina Farm Show on WFBM TV on October 20. Attract and keep teachers who have the vision, the insight, and the skill to help children and youth utilize fully their natural talents and power. 4. Contribute to the development of complete confidence and under- standing between the parent and the teacher. C. For better Communities: 1. Work for effective, coordinated planning and integrated service on the part of all community agencies and institutions interested in the phys- ical, mental, social, and spiritual welfare of children and young people. 2. Maintain a continuing program to develop a greater sense of civic responsibility among all citizens of the community. The purpose of the Parent-Teacher Association Is not to raise children easier, but to raise them better. Is not to make money, but to make live. Is not to criticize the home, but to raise its standards. Is not to ignore poor schools, but to secure new ones. Is not to operate in schools, but to cooperate with them. Is not to find fault, but to find facts. Is not to make every child ia. prodigy, but to give him a chance.
