49EI'S ADVANCE GRADUATE The Advance Hlgh School was orgamzed 1n 1897 w1th E M Servles as teacher and prmclpal The grade school located at the rear of the present bulldlng shared the room I01 the Hlgh School In the yea1 1897 Jackson lownshlp graduated twenty SIX from the elghth grade It 15 xmpossxble to mentlon many names 1n th1s brlet hlstory but It m1ght be of lnterest to mentlon the names ot that first class Prom that group of graduates Ora McDan1el Herbert Epperson W1ll1e Whorley Leo Whorley Harve Day Lee Owens Curtls Hardesty hannle Hardesty and Roy Dodd were the first Advance H1gh School students ln the beglnnlng only a three year course was oflered Later a tour year course was glven and I have been mformed that Mrs I' loss1e Blunk was the flrst graduate of the four year course At that t1me and for several years It was a nonclasslfled school and obtalned 1ts first commlsslon under R D Squlres In 1907 the present bu1ld1ng was completed and the Hlgh School began ltS term November fourth ot that year The enrollment may have varled from year to year but more lmpor tant IS growth from an educatlonal standpolnt In 1897 the Elghth Grade of Bean School came to the Advance School 1h1s probably was the beglnnlng ot consolldatxon 1n Jackson Townshlp Gradually one room schools were consohdated Wlth the Advance School that txme there seems to be a trend toward larger commumtv centers Bet ter h1ghways and modern conveyances have probably contrlbuted to thxs general tendency There may be advantages 1n a larger school and when our mmds are centered on the most Vltal polnt the best educatlon Jackson lownshlp can g1V8 our boys and g11ls consol1dat1on 1tself fades out of the p1cture Advance Hlgh School IS and w1ll always be my Alma Mater but Jackson Townshlp can and w1ll always furnlsh an Alma Mater for every boy and g1rl The Jackson Townshlp Annual was l'l'I6l1t101'l6d to me recently and I thlnk It IS a splendld ldea and I see no reason to doubt 1ts success It IS probably the best ready reference avallable The school record cannot easlly be ln the hands ot everyone whlle many can obtaln a copy of the an nual and lt certalnly IS an asset to one s hbrary QSubm1tted by Ixa Rossi JAMESTGWN GRADUATE I am so glad your h1gh school IS edltlng a year book and lt IS w1th pleas ure I Wflte to you about the school of my chlldhood The school Wh1Ch my parents and thelr frlends attended and the school where my father and aunts taught In those days the school was an 1mportant soc1al and human center 1n the commun1ty The teacher was a welcome guest IH our home It seems to me lt would be a traglc movement to the commun1ty 1f the school would ever cease to functlon I quote from Dwlght D Elsenhower Are we forgettlng the home and the school have to work together to tra1n our youth for 6fI'6Ct1V6 cntlzenshxp 1n a free Democracy?
