FORWARD As the year draws to a close we realize that these past twelve years may well have been the hap- piest and most carefree years of our life. We sincerely hope that this year book will serve as a reminder of all the good times we have had together. Our warmest thanks go to Mr. Kettler, our ad- visor, for all the help and co-operation he has given us in the past year. -The Annual Staff Published By SENIOR CLASS OF 6O JACKSON-LIBERTY HIGH SCHOOL Amsden, Ohio DEDICATION Esther Hartshorn was born in the village of Newark in Licking County to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hartshorn. After her school days at Newark High School in Newark, Ohio she enrolled at Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware. After completing college she taught at Central High School in Lima, at Bradenton and Winterhaven schools in Florida, at Newark High School, and finally came to Jackson Liberty. Mrs. Emmert and her husband William Emmert, a lawyer, celebrated their twenty-sixth Anniversary in June. They have a son, William Jr., at- tending Dental School at Ohio State. Therefore, the Blue and Gold Staff of 6O takes great pleasure in dedicating our annual to Mrs. Esther Emmert who has devoted many years as a teacher to further the education of the students and also as a friend to the students. We further dedicate this 1960 Blue cmd Gold to our parents who have been so kind and understanding the past twelve years Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mrs. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. Mr. and and and and and Mrs Mrs Mrs Mrs. Mrs. Lewis Baumbarger Don Byers Charles Cramer Dean Compton Vincent Frisch Edward J. WOOD Principal S. KENNETH SOLLARS Seniors: Nearly a thousand years ago a man in Persia wrote, The moving finger writes and, having writ, moves on- in describing our inexorable march into history. Each year at graduation time we are struck again by our ability to share common thoughts with 'a man dead for forty generations. True, it certainly is, that this class will leave and many others will come to take its place. Yet each class and each individual leaves a mark on the school and every person in it. ln concluding his thoughts on this matter, Omar Khayyam said, Nor all thy Piety nor wit Shall lure it back to cancel half a line. Nor all thy tears wash out a word of it. The best of luck to the class of 1960. May the writer of history be kind to you. Victor C. Wood Seniors: During this particular phase of the World's History, many problems confront all of us. Some of them are new ones which only the very finest training and research can solve. Our hope is that all of you have received an educa- tional background which will enable you to understand and participate intelligently in the rapidly changing pres- ent and future. You have been a part of our lives these past four years to such an extent that your future and ours will be inseparable. We will share in your ioys and sorrows, and in your achievements and disappointments. H We wish the best of everything to be your lot and may God be pleased with you. S. Kenneth Sollars G. H. Lawyer: Witness: ---- B Witness: A L 4 PROPHECY Whep I reached Hawaii to attend my class reunion on the eve- ning of June 25, I975 it was beautiful and balmy. The palms were swaying and the ocean was rhythmically lapping against the shore. I took a taxi and as I rode along the winding road toward Lula Byers' and Doris Holman's beach house, I became aware of a steady din breaking the tranquility of the June evening. When I finally reached the palm-lined drive-way, Lula and Doris came running down the drive toward me. They had really outdone them- selves on this beach house. It was very beautiful. When I asked them how they could afford such a place they explained that they were very highly paid models. Doris said that they had become tired of all that glamorous society life and had bought the house to get some peace and quiet. As we walked toward the house, Lula mentioned that all of the class of 6O had been able to attend the reunion except Peggy Baumbarger and Lynn Hill. They were both on duty in Alaska. Peg is the Head Nurse of a large Military Hospital and Lynn is teaching school in Juneau. Upon approaching the terrace I heard the sound of clicking needles. I knew it must be Mrs. Jerry Paxton. Jan was knitting a sweater. Jerry and Mr. and Mrs. Duane Shaver were sitting quietly talking over old times. They had decided that the party was getting a little crowded, and had come out for some fresh air. Mrs. Shaver, the former Mary Lou Stearns, and Mrs. Paxton, the former Janice Knepper, were coeowners of a well-known beauty salon in Boston. I was anxious to know haw my other class-mates had fared so I excused myself and went into the crowded room. It seemed as though everyone was having a wonderful time and everyone was trying to talk at once. As I pushed my way through the crowd, I felt someone touch me on the shoulcler. On turning around I came face to face with Anna Marie and Alberta. They had left their children with their husbands and were now having a great time. Alberta was working as a Dental Assistant, and Anna was specializing as a hair stylist. Just then Linda Cramer came over. Linda said that she was doing very well as a music teacher in one of the exclusive eastern schools. We discussed teeth, hair, and children, then we walked over to the buffet to get something to eat. Two women were taking small bites of food from every plate. Linda told us that they were Mary Jane Hammer and Joanne Nye. They were bath working in the Betty Crocker Homemaking Test Kitchens and they just couldn't resist testing the flavor of Hawaiian food. By this time it was getting quite late so everyone decided to retire for the night and resume talking over past school days the next day. The butler and maid showed everybody to their rooms and within a short time everything was peaceful and quiet. While I stood by the window I saw some weird shadows on the beach. I couIdn't decide what they were so I started out of the house to see for myself. Upon coming closer to the beach I heard laughter and music, I might have knownl Judy Roth and Kathy Hughes were trying to teach Doug Turpin and Garth Thomas how to Cha-Cha. Thomas Steinmetz was sitting on a rock laughing at them and eating bananas. Garth seemed to be catching on to it a little but Doug was still having trouble. Garth is a leading Engineer in New York and Doug is a Major in the U.S. Army. Thomas said he was getting along very well with his own busi- ness. Since he always had a head for figures he had become a wealthy public accountant. Garth and Doug grabbed some of Thomas's bananas and sat down to rest their tired legs. Judy and Kathy told us they lived in New Orleans, and since they were prominent society leaders they had just wanted to help Doug and Garth get along in-society. I left them to their dancing and walked back to the beach house. As I entered my room I heard a loud crash from the next room. The door opened and Joe Saalman came storming out of the room, a shoe whizzing past his head. It seems that Joe and his wife, Janice tSteyerl, were having a small disagreement over Joe's new Hawaiian shirt. Joe is a real-estate agent and Janice has a beauty salon in their lovely home. After Joe and Janice had decided to stop quarreling, I went into my room and fell asleep. The next morning I was awakened by a thump and a scream. I ran to the window to find Professor Bernard Scherger lying in the flower bed groaning with a ladder lying across him. By the time everyone had gotten down to the garden, Bernard was in very capable hands. Rose Lucius, Rosalind Frisch, and Anna Lou Saum, all being reg- istered nurses, had everything under control. Mr. Don Kleinfelter, who owned a large farm in Ohio, was ex- plaining how Bernard had fallen from the ladder. lt seemed that Don coulcln't sleep so he had come outside to explore things in the daylight. He had seen some strange beetles on the roof of the house and was sure that Prof. Scherger would like to examine them. He had called Bernard and Bernard took his equipment up to the roof. He became so entranced with the beetles that he failed to notice that he was nearing the edge of the roof. Both Bernard and the ladder came tumbling down. By the way, Bernard is a foremost authority on the subjects of Chemistry, Biology and Zoology. During breakfast I was seated between Carol Baumbarger and the former Annette Moes. Carol told us that she was secretary for the Gover-nor of Ohio. Annette was very happy with her husband, Mr. Paul Shaull, who is the owner of a Construction Company in Wyoming. After thanking Lula, and Doris for their hospitality, and promis- ing to have another reunion soon, everyone started to fill cars, and helicopters with baggage. Just as I was getting into my car Sondra Perkins came running over Iugging a suitcase and trying to hold on her huge hat. Sondra looked lovely in a blue-flowered sarong. She asked me if I would drop her off at Wai-Ki-Ki where she was a secretary for a large, expensive hotel. While we drove to the hotel I thought how wonderful it had been to see the Class of 6O once again. -Sue Compton 'I5 l, H ., r L , .
