I guess the rage rn 54 was to be a secretary We had our share rn the Semor class too Marrlyn Brgham Marrlyn Holman and Ioyce Brgham were all secretarres before they were marrred Marrlyn Brgham was a secretary about frve years before she marrred a wealthy farmer It seems that whrle Marrlyn was rn hrgh school thrs farmer boy had worked for her dad Uust a case of marryrng the bosss daughterl She had three lovely chrldren and a house-full of frrends No greater complrment could be pard Marrlyn Holman was next and rf I remember rrqht she came from a large famrly fl'Ier mother was one Jump ahead of mme she had nrne krds and mme had erght It was close thoughll Marrlyn gave the transportatron people a lot of money before she dred It seems that she traveled qurte a brt and her brothers and srsters all wanted to go along and as I recall she always d1d everythrng she was told Well were glad she came rnto her own She traveled became a secretary and frnally marrred a guy named lack tHe was Presrdent of the G E plant rn Trffrnl Ioyce was the second teacher rn our class She taught speech rn a hrgh school for qurte awhrle and lrke our other two buddres was a secretary I dont know rf that teachrng was a good 1dea or not because we had some heated argu ments on Chaucer and Shakespeare rn Eng Lrt Ioyce and Yvonne really went at rt and Dallas went around talkrng lrke Hamlet untrl he talked rt rn his sleep tor so George Sald for hrs grave was rrght next to Dallassl The nurse s ranks Jorned us next wrth Etta Nrcholson as our Florence Nrqhtmgale Etta was marrred and took very good care of her husband and was Just content to be a housewrfe She took good care of us for the next few years Lrke the trme when Bob Stahl was dorng hrs darly marchrng and stepped mto an open grave and sprarned hrs toes and when Francis was grvrng a speech to Bob Murphy and got excrted and started swrngrng and socked hrmself on the Jaw and oh so many more thrngs that happened down through the ages that I dont even remember them all If my estrmates were correct we had four more senrors of 54 to Jorn us but I guessed wed Just have to wart for them Several years later we had the twenty frrst of our senrors Jom us I-le was Drck Stearns and he was commg up the path pullrng the largest hunk of junk I have ever seen After he had sard Hello no matter where he went he dragged thrs machrnery after hrm One day we frnally got rt out of hrm that rt was an arrplane motor and that he was an aeronautrcal enqrneer when he came to us and he wanted to fmrsh rt He hopes to have rt done when Pete gets here Our next arrrval tthe twenty secondl was Iohnny Strrff He strolled nonchalantly up to hrs shmy new rocker and began talkrng rrght away about how successful he became as a restaurant owner I-le talked and talked and we qot sleeprer and sleeprer untrl frnally Iohnny was talkrng to a bunch of sleeprng strffs I-Ie frnally ran down though and we all woke up tat the same trme tooll We asked Iohn rf he had a drshwasher for each of hrs restaurants and he sard yes and that hrs name was Robert Russell Smce thrs seemed entrrely rmprobable we asked hrm how thrs could be done He sard he had the frnest parr of roller skates rn the crty but then he told us that Bob had perfected an automatrc drshwasher Irt stood I2 ft hrgh and took an elevator to get the drshes to the topl Bob became qurte wealthy wrth hrs machme and mstalled rt rn every one of Strrffs Restaurants Speakrng of Bob he came our way the very next day He confrrmed all Iohnny sard but he told us hrs machme went on the blrnk and he got caught m the conveyor belt wrth the cups so he got a lrttle wet before he Jorned us but he sard now he knows what happens to a cup when rt gets cleaned Our graveyard was Just about full We had two more to go and we were hoprng our now famous Iackson ceme tery would be full of 54 graduates before St Peter came Our socral worker came next Vesta Kellar was the tall handsome lady that came up the steps to her rockrng charr She told us she had been a socral worker rn Fostorra and Toledo and surroundrng countrysrde She had done a lot of welfare domestrc and Juvenrle work She had a won derful way wrth chrldren as I had heard She marrred and had four of her own tall boysl but she strll found trme to help the less fortunate A wonderful Job for somebody wrth a Drq heart Well our farnrly was gettrng brgger now wrth but one more to go Our ranks numbered twenty three then and I Just couldnt remember who the other person was It es caped me for the moment but let me see rt had been thrrty years srnce I was the frrst to come here and my memory was escaprng me somewhat Then I remembered Carolyn Frsh was the onel Carolyn had qurte a trme get trng to school as I remember especrally rn our semor year She came drrvrng up to our place of resrdence rn a lrttle black Ford IBy golly rt looks lrke the one she had 30 years agol Carolyn told us she was rn the Womens Marrnes for a few years IIO to be exactl and a housewrfe the rest In the Marrnes she leamed a lrttle promptness and was never late for anythrng She kept thrs attitude durrng the rest of her lrfe and became more respected for rt At last we are all here and all assembled All twenty four of us ready for St Peter and the Iudgment Day We srt here and look at each other and wonder at the change rn our looks and actrons srnce the year we graduated It doesnt seem lrke so many years ago but trme goes too fast when you get out of school We warted one week after our last classmate arrrved then rn the black of nrght when everythrng was st1ll vorce came to us and told us to be ready the next nrght The followrng day there was a lot of laughrng and a few tears now and then as we thought of the ones who would go through the Pearly Gates and those who wouldnt The day stretched on mto early evenrng and as we warted a flamrng charrot came rnto vrew glrstenrng wrth gold shrn mg wrth the suns rays that were left rn the sky after the sun had gone down There was an angel rn the charrot a beautrful angel wrth a crownmg halo beckonrng toward us Beckonrng for us to come to Hlm and come we drd My classmates
