And as the conversation casually drifted to their gradu- ating class at Jackson in 1951, this is what they found had happened to their classmates during the past twenty years: Delores Armstrong has fulfilled her life long ambition by becoming the best saleslady of the Fuller Brush Company of New York City. She has been doing this for a long time, for she applied for the job during our class trip way back in '51. We find that Joe Barnum is the new owner of the famous Red 73 of Union City. It is evident that he keeps his wife well supplied with that good Red 73 Milk, for she dantily tips the scales at 250'. Quite a surprise is Phillip Detamore coaching the Jackson Redskins to easy victories in the state championship finals. (Mr. Roush is now man- ufacturing college lettermen in mass production). Until Duane finished his term in the Army, Barbara Edwards held a secret military position with his division. But they finally decided army life was not for them. Now they have a small army of their own. (We always knew Barbara was a patriotic girl'.) After all these years, it took little ole' Verda Mae Hurley to break history's tradition by becoming the first woman president of the United States. She doesn't have much trouble controlling Congress, we are told. Gertrude Howell has really been hitting the ropes these days with her wrestling championship title at stake. She says wrestling has its ups and downs. After watching her on television, we whole-heartedly agree with her. The old saying, something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue, seems to have gone over pretty well with Marilyn and Marion, for they now are Mr. and Mrs. Wogomon-------and family1. By name, Melinda, Mike, Margie, and Mickey. (Not to mention a couple of motor- cycles). Now at last we find that all we have to do is turn a little knob to hear Dick Jordan's familiar voice saying, Now Duz even washes your lingerie'. . Yes, he has taken over the radio commercials on WLW. And remember that little knob? It's so convenient to turn him off'. 16 Class Prophecy - (continued) Addah Mae McClain became so interested in cheese from her work at the dairy store, that she went to Switzerland. And of all things, she met a watchmaker there and they now have a cozy home in the Alps'. We haven't heard from Bob Miller in quite a while since his invention of a new type of rocket ship has boomed to popularity. The last we did find out was that he was on his way to the moon. No doubt he took Marlene along. (Nice and private up there you know'.) You never would have guessed that bashful, slow-talking Francis Patterson has become a high powered auctioneer. Peggy takes care of the financial side of the business and she takes care of Francis, too1. Gerald Price has finally established a bus route between Rose Hill and North Manchester. Although we know his wife has her college education, there are other little items around the house that need some schooling. Years ago Gloria Riffle led the cheering section at basketball games, but now she is being cheered as one of the highest scoring forwards on girls' professional basketball teams. It looks as if her physical education classes at Jackson were not in vain. Since Miss Habekost found her dream man, Elsie Rhoades has been running things at Jackson in the music department. She also is interested in Jackson, Indiana. As you know. Jack Cummings is now their coach'. Phyllis Royer has really been places. We hear now that she is doing missionary work in South America and as a sideline she has written many interesting articles and stories about her experiences. Helen Rose has gained new responsibilities since she has now been pro- moted to the position of the boss's wife instead of merely being his secretary. Looks as if when Helen applied for her job, she got more than she bargained for. Nice work, don't you agree? My, but Duane Shomber lives a dangerous life since he is driving for the Yellow Cab Company of Chicago1. We just hope he never gets involved with any gangsters'. Eleanor Stocksdale now sings on the Telephone Houi1' with none other than Gordan McRae'. Of course, we all realize that her training at Jackson was the most important stepping stone in her singing career'. 17 Class Prophecy - (continued) Since the family's expenses are increasing so rapidly, the former Marlene Swallow is helping to make the living for her little angels (so Marlene says) by giving music lessons. (Marlene drives around in her Buick these days while Jim sports a beautiful Chevy1.) During his tireless search for his one and only, Herman Washington has become known as one of the greatest lovers since Rudolph Valentino. (And just to think he never had a date during high school1. Ahem1. Ahem1.) After breaking all scholastic records at Miami, Jeanette Weiss decided it was time to do something worthwhile. Now Dick and she are putting their talent together and raising brainy little tigers for Ansonia's future basketball and football teams. Instead of The Egg And f it is The Pig And f for Sally Wisner. For the little farm near Fort Recovery is getting quite overrun with HAMPSHIRE Pigs. Sally says there is never a dull moment! Joyce Wright has finished beauty school and is now literally making Dayton the city beautiful' from her excellent work with cosmetics. Yesterday we read in the Dayton Daily News that Joyce has taken out a patent on her latest hair-do! 18 Senior Class History Delores Armstrong--June 20, 1933 Came to Jackson in March of seventh grade from Lewisburg. She has been one of the meanest girls at Jackson, even if the teachers haven't caught her yet1. She also likes the armed services, we hear. Joe BarnumâSeptember 1, 1932 Started to school here at Jackson in the first grade, but left us to go to the Washington Township School. He couldn't resist coming back, however, although we know he also likes Union City very well. Phillip DetamoreâJuly 25, 1933 Came to Jackson in the first grade and has been going here ever since. He is a strong backer of the Junior Class. Barbara Edwards--February 3, 1934 Entered the halls of Jackson in her Freshman year from Washington Township- It is rumored that she likes the Army, and black Plymouths, very much'. Gertrude Howell--September 30, 1932 Entered the halls of Jackson in her Freshman year from Beaver Pond. Green- ville is her favorite town'. Verda Mae Hurley--September 6, 1933 A shy, but intelligent little girl entered school for the first time at Jackson in 1939. She has always had a bright future ahead of her'. Marilyn Jones--March 2 0, 193 3 Came to Jackson in the fourth grade from Mt. Sion. She seems to get along with the teachers very well. She flashes her left hand around these days'. Richard Jordan--January 9, 1933 Started his education here at Jackson in the first grade and for some reason, has been at it ever since. He is well known for his farming ability. Addah Mae McClain--September 7, 1933 Entered Jackson in the first grade and left in the fifth grade; but seeing that Jackson was a better school, she decided to come back in the sixth grade. So we have her with us yet'. And we're glad. Robert Miller--November 30, 1933 Came to Jackson in the sixth grade and has been going here ever since. He seems to keep a pretty close watch on the Junior Class. 19 Francis Patterson--September 16, 1933 Came to our class in his Freshman year from Washington Township, and has been going here ever since, even if he has been accused of leaving his heart at the East Side'. Gerald Price--October 9, 1932 He entered our school in his Freshman year from Dayton, and has been keep- ing up with us ever since. We know he'll make it now1. Elsie Rhoades--August 16, 1933 She entered our dear J. H. S. in the first grade and for some reason or other we haven't been able to get rid of her', (but we don't really care'.) She is our bash- fullest!' gal. Gloria Riffle--May 8, 1933 She entered during our Freshman year from Woodington School. She thinks Bronze '50' Fords are super. Well, maybe they are'. Helen Louise Rose--July 29, 1933 She joined our class in her Junior year from Greenville High School. Could it be that she likes Chevrolets ? ? ? ? Oh, never'. Phyllis RoyerâDecember 4, 1933 She has gone to Jackson all her twelve years, beginning with Miss Thelma Huffer and finishing before she finishes her dad completely'. Not always being an entirely good little girl, she is still pretty well liked by all the teachers and kids. Duane Shomber--November 26, 1933 He started here as a wee little tot in the first grade, and he is not too big yet1. He is still growning, though, freckles and all'. Jeanette Stiver--May 5, 1933 Slowly entered Jackson in the second semester of the first grade from Ansonia. We here that any day she may become Mrs. Bill Mikesell'. Eleanor Stocksdale--September 25, 1933 Blondie, as she is sometimes called, has yet to find her one and only, but she is not worried, as there is, she knows, plenty of time'. She came to Jackson in the first grade and has been heard singing in the halls of dear old J. H. S. ever since'. Marlene SwallowâSeptember 9, 1933 Quietly entered Jackson in the first grade and has been with our class all the years after. It seems to her that all roads lead to the little town of Ansonia, across the way'. Herman Washington--June 15, 1933 Enrolled here in the class in the first grade, left in the second grade, came back in the seventh grade, left in the eighth grade, and finally decided to stick for good when he returned in his Freshman year'. He has been sliding along with us ever since. 20 Jeanette WeissâJanuary 2 0, 1933 She entered our Class of ' 51 from Washington, too, way back when we were inexperienced Freshmen. She seems to know a lot about Ansonia's football team-- Hmmmm-------we wonder why1.1.1. Sally Ann Wisner--August 18, 1934 Entered the class in the Freshman year from Hancock, Michigan. She likes Fort Recovery quite well. Joyce Wright--August 18, 1933 Entered Jackson in the seventh grade from Dayton, Ohio's Wayne Township. We know she still is very much attached to the fair city, however1. 21 Class Will We, the members of the Senior Class of 1951 of the school of Jackson, county of Drake, and state of Ohio, being of sound mind and memory, do hereby make, publish and declare this to be our last will and testament. As we leave our old familiar J. H. S., we wish to give some of our assets to the underclassmen for their misfortune or bene- fit, as the case may be. But to all underclassmen, we first of all will our ability to get along together, and our ability to study. These are the individual bequests,.1.1. I, Joyce Wright, will my quiet ways to Mary Wisner. a Class Poem We are the Class of '51. Our lives, as yet, remain unsung; Are silent, still, undone. Tender, separate destinies have only just begun. And how well we'll remember Jackson'. The dear old place where first we learned To really know each other; To live and laugh and love.......together. Scenes will come back to us from every year, And bring perhaps, a sigh or a tear. But so it goes'. Now, of course, we'll have a brief review Of every Senior heart so true: First comes Delores Armstrong, needless to say. Because her name begins with an A. She is tall and slender, likes to laugh and roller skate, And is never at a loss for words in a debate'. Joe Barnum, a stocky fellow with a dimple in his cheek. Just lives for the Friday night of every week. Studies for Joe are mostly just a bore; No brain work for him, except on the basketball floor. Phil Detamore's an all-round guy, When you greet the gang, his is the friendliest Hi. And although it's Marilyn he talks to in the hall--- All the girls (and fellas, too) are sure he's on the ball'. Barbara Edwards is a tall and pretty girlâ Something about her makes boys' hearts whirl. But they might as well play it safe and sane. t For Barbara has eyes for no one but her Army lad, Duane. Gertie Howell, the artist of our class. Is a good-looking, as well as talented lass. She works in the lunch room (and we know she likes to eat) But never mind, Gertie, you still can t be beat. Verda Mae Hurley, who holds the class together. And sticks by us in all kinds of weather. Is really and truly one nice gal-- A swell president, and a wonderful pal'. Marilyn Jones is better known as Maralie or jonesie, And about that fact, we know we simply can't be bonesyâ . In fact, her popularity makes us think we, too, f Should have more than the one ordinary name we do. 23 Dick Jordan is always ready with his cockeyed grin; And if there ever were a laughing contest, oh, Dick would surely win1, For who has ever met our Dick down in the dumps ? ? ? ? He doesn't travel that way; the road's too full of bumps'.'. Addah Mae McClain works hard at the dairy store-- Night and day her heels pound that hard, familiar floor; But a little fraternity pin wonders will do'. We know it keeps her from becoming very, very blue'. Bob Miller and Marlene exist from sigh to sigh; Sometimes we wonder if maybe--------but then, we mustn't pry'. Anyhow, here's the best of everything to these two, And maybe something old will soon be something new'. Francis Patterson, who thinks a lot of a girl in Union City, Has good taste, for Peggy is pretty'. And Franny also likes to drive his car---- That's why you see him wherever you are'. Gerald Price, we think, is a neat, nice find, But he has too many girls on his mind'. Nevertheless, he'll just settle down and farm--- He'll soon be married; there's no cause for alarm'. Elsie Rhoades has big, shining brown eyes That help her get acquainted with all the guys'. And you can't say the boys don't like it--they do'. (And don't let Elsie fool you---she likes it, too'.) Gloria Riffle's wide cheer leading fame Has added to the status of Jackson's fair name'. And that's swell, Gloria'. Just stay behind that team--- They need you to keep them on the beam'. Helen Rose is our one gal who Goes with a boy from the Class of '52'. And even if she does say her hope chest is hope-less, We know that's just a lot of foolishness1. Phyllis Royer is always reading or writing: She thinks manuscripts are so exciting'. But watch her engrossed as she goes down the hall---- If she weren't equipped with radar, oh, she'd surely fall'. Watch out'. Duane Shomber is on the loose'. (All the teachers want Duane for unnecessary abuse'.) But we're sure Duane is good at heart, He does try to do his part'. Jeanette Stiver's only known will Is to marry a guy she affectionately calls Bill. The best of luck to you, Jeanette, And may this tie-up prove the best yet'. 24 Eleanor Stocksdale has a voice that's very good. We hope she makes out as well as she she should1. One day, let's hope we'll be proud to relate That little 'Lenore was our classmate'. Marlene Swallow is the president of the Senior Band; She's a girl we know is grand'. (And, no doubt, Jim knows it, too.) So, Marlene, it looks as though we all love you'. Herman Washington is a black-haired boy, Who is, we're sure, his father's pride and joy. When asked to do something, with a sigh, He only says How? and never Why? Jeanette Weiss, who never says die, Makes an A, or doesn't try----- She helps us all, and is really swell'. (And Dick agrees, so all is well'.) Sally Ann Wisner's not exactly dumb. She, too, wraps studies around her thumb'. (And though Donnie would like to give her a diamond ring, We're sure she doesn't want the old thing'.) Joyce Wright, whom everyone calls Jo, Is quiet and unassuming, as all of you know. But she also is just loads of fun--- (As soon as she gets her studying done'.) And this is all of us--- Yes, we are through. We just want to say Best Wishes To you, and you, and you'. And please---- Carry on the traditions of Jackson, Continue in her virtue, her fame. Spread her fair, of fairest names'. To you, the classes yet to come, We, the Class of '51, Throw the torch of learning. Hold it high'. 25 Juniors L. ELLIOTT N. SUBLER P. LAWSON M. SUBLER J. SHOOK R. RHOADES R. McEOWEN G. DAY C. Lacking height this year, Jackson has depended almost entirely upon drive. While other teams of the county had two or three six footers, we had only one on the first squad, and our strength on the bankboard was weak. We had no rebound men back from last year, and our lack of experience showed pretty badly at the first of the year. Several of our games were very close and could have gone either way, but bad luck seemed to be on our side. Seven games were lost by one or two points. Our record looks pretty bad, but we were always able to put up a good scrap and push the other team to the limit. We showed our ability to play ball by beating Wayne, one of the better teams of Randolph County, 59 to 57. In the tournament we drew Hollansburg who hit a large percent of their shots and beat us 68 to 48. Duane Richards made 30 points for Hollansburg, and Detamore and Jessup were high for the Jackson Redskins making 12 points apiece. This put us into the losers bracket. We met and defeated Monroe on a last minute basket by Bobby Livingston who was high for Jackson with 15 points. Fasick was high for Monroe with 12 points. We went on to meet Gettysburg who defeated us by a score of 47 to 46. Laughman was high for Gettysburg with 13 points, and Livingston connected for 19 for Jackson. The prospects for next year are very good since only Detamore and 37 Barnum are lost by graduation.
