L J. TOME Principal This marked the second year that Mr. Caniford and Mr. Tome have served as Superintendent and Principal of the Jackson high school, respectively. Their duties are many and varied. MR ANDY STEVE Secondary Curriculum Director 19 MR CHARLES CANIFORD Superintendent MR GEORGE WINKLER Clerk-Treasurer Members of the Board of Education arc elected by the voters of Jack- son township and are vitally important to our school system. One of their major projects this year was the planning of the new high school. MR FERMAN SLAYBAUGH Business Manager MRS. JUNE LORENZ BOARD MEMBERS — President Mrs Beth Phillips and Dr Richard Drukenbrod. Assistant Clerk-Treasurer MR RAY BAUGHMAN Psychologist rifl J | in w •rr WTfll Tl BOARD MEMBERS — Mr. John Dougherty, Mr Robert Weisgarber. and Mrs Anne Barbin 20 Guidance Counselors Mr. Larry Britton Mrs. Lola Hillcbrccht This year Mrs. Hillcbrccht and Mr. Britton served as N.H.S. advisors. Mr. Foose also served as Director of Scholarships. Many stu- dents found the guidance counselors very helpful in scheduling courses and supplying college information. Mr Dick Foose Librarians MRS JANE PFENDLER This year Mrs. Pfendler served as coordina- tor of the school libraries, Mrs. Bales was the Library Technician, and Miss Fry was extremely helpful to all students and teachers needing information. In addition, she coordi- nated the audio-visual services. MISS DONNA FRY 21 MRS GERALDINE BALES MRS LOIS BAXTER Department Chairman Math This year many math classes changed to the mini-course system. Sen- iors were given the opportunity of choosing from eight nine-week courses. They included vectors, conics, functions, probability and statis- tics, logic, advanced graphing, limits and derivatives. This system gave each student a better chance to major in his special interest, or vary his studies. The new program seemed to be working well, not only benefiting students with a better choice of math, but also eliminating semester exams. MR WILLIAM HUMPHREY MISS JANE VANAMAN MRS KAREN CUNION Seniors Offered New Opportunities Two new additions to the math staff this year were Mrs. Carol Rothel, who taught Alge- bra I and II and Junior High physical education and Mr. Wil- liam Humphrey, our new Practi- cal Math teacher. 23 English Pictured on this page arc Mrs. Marie Mullins (upper right), Mrs Beth Eggers (upper left); Mr John Broemsen (lower right); and Mr Don Montgomery (lower left). Pictured on the opposite page arc Mrs Jean Wasko (upper left); Mrs. Dalene Vincent (upper right), Mr Fred Freeland (lower left); and Mrs Connie Leistiko (lower right). 24 Many Changes Influence Curriculum Changes for this year included the addition of Sports Literature, taught by Mrs. Eggers, and Coping with the Mass Media, taught by Mr. Freeland. Also Mrs. Eggers’ Advance Placement class became more of a college course, much to the dis- may of her pupils. It did, however, provide them an even bigger boost in their college careers. 25 Science This year, under the new scheduling, students had more time in science classes. Every other day they had lab which lasted for two periods. This gave the science teachers an opportunity to plan longer lab knowing the students wouldn’t be interrupted. Mr. Filkill was kept busy this past summer moving his test tubes and fetal pigs over to room 221, his newly designed laboratory. The science teachers became active mem- bers of the County Textbook Adoption Com- mittee choosing new textbooks for next year. Under the department chairman, Mr. McKee, the staff consisted of Mr. Steel, Mrs. Sandru, Mr. Filkill, and Mr. Springer 26 Social Studies . . . History Taught Best In Pairs Mr. Schuctz breaks his diet — with great pleasure The dynamic duo, Mr. Joe Herman and Mrs. Steve Buckler, returned this year to add humor and technique to their classes of American History. Mr. Gary Roberts and Mr. Harold Montgomery also teamed up to enlighten the juniors on this subject, (picture on next page) Behavioral Science was taught by Mr. Elmer Schuetz. Mr Herman teamed with Mr. Buckler (upper left). 27 Social Studies Mr. Harry Dutka and Mr. Melville Herncanc taught American Govern- ment. They both had unique back- grounds, Mr. Dutka with over 20 years teaching experience, and Mr. Herncane as President of the Massillon City Council. MR HARRY DUTKA MR GARY ROBERTS 28 MR MEL HERNCANE MR HAROLD MONTGOMERY Department Chairman Foreign Language Oranges in the winter? The Foreign Language department was again involved in the selling of oranges in hopes of raising enough money to send one class to Mexico. Mrs. Wheeler, advisor of the Spanish Club, was objective about the sale, though she revealed that if the needed money was not raised, two scholarships would be offered. Barb Haver- stock and Lowell Bailey were the Spanish scholars chosen to go last summer. The traditional International Dinner was a success. The picture at the right shows the enthusiastic Mrs. Vicki Rosa and Mrs. Josephine Codis- poti eating a little of anything and everything set in front of them. Mrs. Alice Wheeler, Mrs. Nancy Peterson, and Mr. Rosario Calabria enjoy the conversation almost as much as the food. Art and Music 74- 75 Music was spectacular! Along with a new band director, Mr. Joe Bowman, we saw new routines this year. Mr. Bowman brought with him new ideas, including the guillotine, trumpets, and new marching styles and patterns. You won’t find Miss Lee Bush in Room 121 anymore. She and her conglomeration have moved to Room 208. Mr. William Sample continued his excellent job with the choir, as one could see by the increased membership and outstanding performances. Her hard work was rewarded, however, by the increased participation of the girls. She coached girls’ volleyball and swimming. Mrs. Rothcl coached girls' basketball. Mr. Laut returned, not only as a physical education teacher, but also as head f x tball coach. Mr. Maltarich taught the health classes and served on the football coaching staff. When her boys weren’t found in the kitchen, they could be found across the hall in the clothing lab. Mrs. Bridenstine taught them to sew and embroider shirts. Mrs. Elsass taught Home Ec, alternating classes with Miss Mary McCoy. Miss McCoy also taught clothing lab and returned as depart- ment head. MRS SANDRA ELSASS AND MRS JANE BRIDENST1NE Industrial Arts Another Change Satisfied by the Mini-Course System The mini-course system has been so successful that this year the Industrial Arts field made the switch. Five, one-semester courses were offered to all high school students. The courses included: Home Repairs — Mr. Howard Burgess; Small Engine Repair — Mr. Mike Stevens and Mr. Charles Hawkins; Offset Lithography and Photography — Mr. Ivan Welch; and Mechanical Drawing — Mr. Edward Durigg. Vocational Students’ Needs Are Met This Year To meet the needs of more students, an Occupa- tion Work Experience course was offered at the junior level. Mr. Paul Weaver was selected to coordinate this program. Mr. Cliff Shaffer was in charge of the Occupa- tional Work Experience pro- gram on the senior level. Mr Robert Hampu continued with Distributive Education and Mr. Jerry Streator worked with students enrolled in Diversified Coop- erative Training. The girls’ drill team has been seen carrying the honors at the basketball games. The ROTC sponsored a donkey basketball game between the WINW disc-jockeys and the Jackson teaching staff. Of course, our teachers won! Greater interest influenced the achievements of the Work Study program. Their major fund-raising project was selling fruit. The Mirrorman” was performed six times, twice at each elementary school. The difference in this play was that there was audience participation. The characters in the play actually talked and listened to the audience to get them to participate in the play. The play was a story about a toyman and his toy doll who helped the mirrorman rid their toy shop of a greedy witch. Often the audience was called on to help defeat the witch. Forty-three students were inducted this year in the traditional candle lighting ceremony held on March 4th. Being placed in the most difficult division in the District Tournament was the only thing which prevented our team from going to State competition. Other team honors were the selection of Bob Peters, Brad Barbin, Bryan Barbin, and Dennis Mathie to the All-Federal Team. Most of their losses were very close matches, but in the tournaments the team showed its real strength. They placed second in both the Triway and New Philadelphia tournaments. The team then went on to take a very respectable fourth place in the Sectional Tournament while placing four wrestlers, Larry Popa, Russ Johns, Jim Killian, and Mark Chcncvey, in the District Tournament.
