HEEL. 138 SENIOR INDEX le ke 7 af ey i i ian sn pow iy } ‘ y a = | Our days with Jackson have meant group participation in classes, assemblies, and other activities that are a part of school life. We have all experienced the excitement of a foot- ball game, the fearful anticipation of report card day, and the mad scramble to get a place in the lunch line. We all know what it is like when that test grade turns out to be a little higher or lower than expected, when we are caught unpre- pared by a pop quiz, or when we are late for class and that locker door just won’t open. These experiences are typical but they have bound us together. We at Jackson have come to look upon ourselves, not as many individuals, but as one stu- dent body living and working together. Tallman, who this year became the new superintendent of the Jackson school district, is well-rounded in his accomplishments—educational as well as many other areas. After his graduation from Capital University in 1954, where he obtained a history major and minors in biology and physical education, Mr. Tallman began his teaching career at Grove City High School, southwest of Columbus. Then joining the army for two years, Mr. Tallman served as an administrative specialist in Alaska, also finding time to attend the University of Alaska. Returning to Grove City High School, our new superintendent again assumed his role as a teacher. In 1960 he became assistant principal and advisor to student activities, and eventually rose to the position of superintendent. Also during this time, Mr. Tallman acquired his Master’s Degree in school administration and political science from Ohio State University. Last summer he studied at Bowling Green, adding personnel administration and a seminar in public relations to his education. Mr. Tallman is presently working for his Doctor’s Degree at the University of Toledo. Athletic feats are also among Mr. Tallman’s accomplishments, participating in football, basketball, and track in high school and basketball, and track in college. He set records in the 440 yard dash at Capital and in the Springfield relays. Mr. Tallman is active in local, state and national educational organizations. He served as one of the educational consultants at the recent American Medical Association Conve ntion, is active in the Lions and International church organizations, and is listed in “Who's Who in American Education.” We work with your aoe fo ‘provide you with the best education possible. They have and will make many sacrifices for your benefit. But in the final analysis, we are merely trying-to facilitate your own efforts toward mature behavior. It is up to you as an individual to use the tools of e ucation provided to the fullest extent. Getting a good education should have pri on your list of interests. | sincerely hope that you feel as | do, that Jackson is the finest school in our area. There should be a glow of pride in each of us whenever Jackson High School i mentioned. . My congratulations to each of you for a successful and profitable school year. Andrew Steve | like to.take this opportunity to offer my sincerest congratulations to each and every member of the class of 1966. You have worked hard to achieve this first major goal in your lives. Let your high school graduation be the spark that ignites your desire to excel in your chosen field of endeavor. Dale Haverstock Board of Education STANDING: Marion DeWalt; Dale Forgan; Donald Graybill; C. W. Tallman, Superintendent; SEATED: Paul Drury, Vice president; Paul Gerber, President; Glenn Hershberger, Clerk-Treasurer. Secretaries Mrs. Peggy Baines—in charge of booth, Mrs. June Lorenz—Secretary to the Clerk-Treasurer. Mrs. Leila Henry—High School Secretary, Mrs. Doris Gerber—Secretary to the Superintendent, Mrs. Bea Taylor—Secretary to the Administrator For 20 Years of Service... When Marion L. DeWalt retired from the Jackson Local Board of Ed ucation December 31, 1965, he brought to a close a term of serv- ice which mirrors in many respects the changing condition of edu- cation in twentieth century. Mr. DeWalt was appointed in July, 1945 to fill the unexpired term of R. H. Sharrock and was elected to the board in 1945, 1949, 1953, 1957, and 1961. During this time, he served twice as board president. Also being concerned with maintaining the high standards set by the district, and with operating them at the lowest possible cost to the taxpayer, Mr. DeWalt said his initial purpose for embarking on a twenty year career as a school board member was his two daughters, who were students in the district. The members of Jackson Memorial High School would like to praise and thank Mr. DeWalt for his twenty years of dedicated service. MR. MARION DEWALT MR. GENE BARNHART MR. Science Department For the first time at Jackson, five courses of science have been offered to anyone wishing to further his education in that field. General Science, which is the exploration into the many phases of the scientific field, is the only science which is required at Jackson. In Biology, one studies living organisms from the most microscopic to the largest. For those interested in nursing and medicine, Biology serves as a foundation. Chemistry, the study of the composition and properties of sub- stances, helps a student to appreciate the role of chemicals in every- day life. . The study of Physics deals with the properties, changes, and inter- actions of matter and energy. This subject also deals with physical and mathematical measurements. Physiology, a new course offered at Jackson this year, deals with the functions and vital processes of living organisms or their parts and 6raans. MR. CECIL A. But we must re- alize that this youth-like freedom will be short lived. Soon many of us will enter col- lege to once again be “enslaved” by text- books; others will compete for jobs in order to beat the “rat-race”. Yet it should be re- membered that this in itself is a freedom relatively unknown to millions of people. The freedom to further one’s education or the freedom to choose one’s profession is something which only citizens of the United States of America possess. The only reason we today possess any form of freedom is because a great many Americans took the liberty to die for their country. At the times they were on the battlefield these soldiers may not have thought about dying in such a way for such a cause as American free- dom; but | feel assured that if they again had their choice between living or changing the course of history they would not hesi- tate to choose the latter. So you see our liberty is not a right; it is a privilege—a privilege which we ourselves may have to earn. . . even by dying. We would like to thank the teachers of Jackson High, for they have given the key which unlocked the door to the world, as well as a push in the right direction. tute tHtct Our senior class officers are Alec Michael, Treasurer; Donna Halter, Secretary; Mike White, President; and Paul O’Connor, Vice-President. Throughout the past four years, we have lost our fright, and have had the opportunity to express our enthusiasm. We shall re- member the money-making projects, the Junior-Senior Proms, the Senior Party, and many other momentous occasions. The class colors, burgundy and white; the class flower, the pink rose; and the class motto, “We have opened the door, the world lies before us;” all represent the Class of ‘66. Terri Altland W. A student must maintain an overall average of 2.5 to be eligible. A vote by the senior class then determines who will be Mr. and Miss Jack- sonite and the runners-up. The basis of the voting is personality and service to the school. The distinction this year is given to Mr. Jeff Zink and Miss Nancy Stockburger. Honors also received by Nancy this year include Miss Junior Achievement Ist Runner Up, Basketball Homecoming Queen, treasurer of Y-Teens, and secretary of the band. ALLAN SCHOTT Mr. Jeff Zink Miss Nancy Stockburger 93 Something New Our days with Jackson this year have been improved by services rendered and additions to the school. Thanks to new faces and modernization, Jackson has continued to progress in its goal toward a more perfect. institution of learning. Programs for assemblies this year were typed up on a new IBM Executive typewriter, which was operated by Dave Schroyer and Helen Walton. The flag raising at the football games was carried out by the Boy Scouts. Pictured is Dan Jindra, who helped at every game, and Tom Holl. The new office reception area was made possible through the efforts of Mr. Davidson and the shop. This year we had a graduate from Valby School in Copenhag- en, Denmark. Anita Larsen stayed with an aunt by the name of Mrs. Kai Licht who lived on Huckelberry and then moved to the Lehman district in January. She became an active member in many organizations as part of the senior class. New teachers added to the school this year include ROW 1: Mrs. Hursh, Mrs. Hillebrecht, Mrs. Morgan. ROW 2: Mr. Dawson, Mr. Bergen, Mr. Voltz, and Mrs. Day, Miss Roberson—not pictured. The Happiest Millionaire This year the Belles and Beaus presented the All-Class Play, “The Happiest Millionaire” written by Kyle Crichton. It was directed by Miss Karen Anderson. The play, which was held in November only had four weeks of preparation, during which there were many problems. The play deals with an eccentric millionaire, Anthony J. Drexel Biddle, who wanted to live exactly as he pleased. That included teaching his children how to box and keeping live alligators in the conservatory. There were three student directors. They were Elain Brechbill, David Blank, and Johnnye Lewis. Our Days Jackson School-are filled with many chapters that make a memorable book. There is studying to be done but it takes many experiences to fulfill a high school career. Many _ different events took place during the year to help make “Our Days with You” ones we will never forget. aa ae oS Ee = a sala fe 1 On December 21, the band and choir combined for a Christmas concert which they presented for the student body and in the evening for the public. The sock-hops after the home games added a memorable chapter to the lives of the students. Each new friend adds another chapter. A lot can be gotten from the Sciences if one takes it seriously and works hard. WY Tih YOU: eer The bonfire ral- ly held Novem- ber 4 encour- aged our foot- ball team to get a victory from Canton South. A victory rally was held on Monday after the North Canton football game to thank Mr. Reese and the team for a job well done, which gave us a 10-0 victory season. In the lobby at noon, the students relax and release many of the tensions that build up during the course of a school day. What would the students do with- out the use of the telephone? Santa looked over the record of Mr. Temple and the band members at the Band Christmas Party, held December 18, to determine if they should get anything for Christmas. Le Cercle Francais As members of the circle francais, under the supervision of Mr. Geib, the students of this club learn to know well one of the most fluently spoken modern languages. With the aid of new books for all the classes, this is more readily accomplished. Upon entering into their third year of French, the students are proudly presented with pins which have on them the emblem of a Fleur-de-lis. These pins merit their accomplishments of the past two years of French and completion of their third year. At Christmas the students collect old toys for needy children. For the first time, this year they entered a project into the Language Fair. By doing so it helped them to learn about and appreciate the beauty of France. Y-Teens The Jackson Chapter of Y-Teens is an organization composed of interested and ambitious girls working for the betterment of every individual. This year, as never before, the follow-up to each Y-Teen meeting and co-operation among the girls was fantastic. Under the supervision of a new advisor, Mrs. Day, this club had interesting speakers and programs for the monthly meetings. At Christmas time, the girls went caroling at Massillon State Hospital and contributed small gifts for a service project. A trip to Washington D.C. was planned for Y-teen members in June. This year in Stark County, it was indeed the year of the Polar Bear. Jackson this season had one of the best—if not the best—teams that ever played here. A team that abounded with skill and spirit, they started the season with a big win over Canton Lehman and ended it with an even bigger one over North Canton, scoring the winning points in the last eight seconds. When the Bears came home after the final game they brought with them the Federal Season Crown (the first in three years) and the first undefeated season in ten years and were ranked 15th in the state. Jackson had seven players on the first All Federal League team, two on the All County, two on the Northeastern Ohio teams, and one on the All State team. ' The reserve and freshman teams also had good seasons, with an undefeated season for the former and a loss of only one for the frosh. So it appears that Jackson will be a football power in the county for some time to come. A lot of work had to be done; but along with the work, there have been many good times to remember while putting the book together. As a team, we have worked to do our best to turn out what we consider, “the best Scoop ever”; and hope that as you go through the book, it will bring back many memories of things you did throughout the year. We would like to thank all those who helped us make everything possible. Thanks go to Troup Pluto for doing a wonderful job with the pictures, to all the companies to whom we sold ad s, and to the faculty and administration; without all their co-operation our work would have been greatly hindered. Special thanks goes to Mr. Ramga for all his patience and advice in helping us meet all our deadlines. Again, we would like to thank everyone who made the ‘66 SCOOP possible. Sincerely, Becky Vaughn and Connie Nelson Co-editors A leading business firm uses as its trade mark an illustration of a hand reaching for the stars. They explain that you don’t always get a star by reaching for one; on the other hand, you don’t wind up with a handful of mud. There’s a lot to be said for doing the best you possibly can all the time. If you don’t, you may never find out how good you are. If you’re about to enter your senior year, there’s a good chance it will... but you must remain in school, and earn a high school diploma. Who says so? The U.S. Census Bureau. Its figures show graduates earn about $35,000 more before they retire than those who drop out in the first three years. Sure, a diploma’s no guarantee of a good job. But personnel managers do ask themselves: “If he didn’t finish high school, how do | know he’II stick it out here.” Remember. Unemployment among dropouts is twice that of the general popu- lation. And dropouts stay unemployed longer! , Yet, despite these disturbing statistics, three of ten high school students leave without diplomas. Some 750,000 high school students will quit next year. Castle of Dreams Corsages, boutonnieres, and beautiful formals were once again in abundance at the 1966 Jun- ior-Senior Prom. The theme for this year’s dance was “Castle of Dreams” and it was held on May 13 in the Moonlight Ballroom at Myers Lake Park. Although there was no official after prom, the weekend continued for most with parties, pic- nics, and other activities. Jan Crum and her escort enter the ballroom through the “Castle of Dreams.” The menu and the program were very artistically designed. Larry Fromm, Pam Nusbaumer, Carol Taylor, and Jeff Zink, arrive at the dance. Alan Schott seats his date at one of the tables. This couple found time to relax under one of the many “sweetheart trees.” Sharing the evening with friends helped to make it even more memorable. The Cockneys of Covent Garden ask “‘Wouldn‘t It Be Loverly”. MY FAIR LADY was presented by the choirs on April 1 and 2. This being the last play Mr. Lewis directed at Jackson, was one of the best our school has produced. This success was partly due to the combined work of the choirs and band; again a first time the band did the orchestration. The story, MY FAIR LADY, is one of Eliza Doolittle, a common ignorant girl who takes speech lessons from Professor Henry Higgins, so that she can become a lady instead of selling flowers on the corner of Covent Garden in London. Through the whole story Eliza shows an increasing love for Prof. Higgins, but he dominates her and treats her rudely. Finally in the end when she decides to leave, he discovers that he loves her, too. She then stays with him and they are very happy. The two leads, Karen Bushman and Mike Bode, come forward to receive their much deserved applause. Eliza. Doolittle Henry Higgins Karen Bushman Mike Bode Col. Pickering .
