Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1963 volume:

This aerial view is evidence of the many changes that have taken place at Jackson during the past quarter of a century. FOREWORD In 1939 the parent edition of the SCOOP was published. Now, a quarter of a century later, the newest member of the annual family has been edited. Although this yearbook is presented in a new format, it will, however, have for many persons the characteristics of an old friend. For the past twenty-five years each successive pub- lication has pictorially recorded the events of that year. In general, this book is arranged to stress greater emphasis on the current year, however, the inclusion of material from the past two and one-half decades plays a major role. Throughout these pages we hope to restore to many hearts and minds a few memorable experiences at Jackson High. At the same time we strive to impress upon the student of today that these high school years are his threshold years, and after having played an influential part in directing the course of his life, will, in time, be among his moments to remember. With this in mind, the annual staff presents for your view- ing the twenty-fifth edition of the yearbook, SCOOP. Jackson students' home away from home. 2 VOLUME 25 JACKSON MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL 7355 Mudbrook Street N.W. Mr. Ramga still the annual staff he did in 1939. advises just as 4 Co-Dedication MR. CECIL RAMGA We would also like to dedicate the 1963 Scoop to our advisor, Mr. Cecil Ramga. He has executed two main services in the past twenty-five years. He has been the advisor of the yearbook staff and he has taught various classes. This year we, the annual staff, dedicate the 1963 Scoop to Mr. Preston Lawrence. He has served Jackson faithfully in vari- ous capacities since 1931. He is currently in his twenty-eighth year as high school principal. MR. PRESTON LAWRENCE Progress Is Our Most The buses used in 1939 have greatly changed from those we are currently using. Not only the kitchen, but also the menu has changed during the past twenty-five years. 6 Important Product The band now has close to one hundred members as compared to sixty in 1940. Like many other things, the band, cheerleaders, and the foot- ball team have changed during the past twenty-five years. The band now develops a theme and formations during half-time shows. To many of us, boy cheer- leaders are a thing of the past. The football teams have in- creased in size and in the num- ber of victories. In 1939 the team compiled a perfect record of no victories. This year's record was much better—8 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie. One thing hasn't changed. Cheerleaders still lead our teams on to victory. 7 ► FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION Although teaching meth- ods have changed during the past twenty-five years, the willingness and unselfish- ness of our faculty and ad- ministrators have remained constant. The students graduating from Jackson represent the collaborative efforts of this fine staff of men and women to whom our appreciation and gratitude is not often enough expressed. With these pictures we hope to rekindle their sub- conscious to memories of days past and to arouse in them the desire to continue doing such rewarding work. II Administration Sets Goals and Plans MR. G. L. RADER, EXECUTIVE HEAD Mr. G. L. Rader, executive head of the Jackson Township Public Schools, is shown reviewing the agenda for a fu- ture meeting. In order to meet the de- mands of our growing school popula- tion, many new duties have fallen upon his shoulders. Mr. Rader is responsible for seeing that the Jackson schools are run smoothly and efficiently, and his interest in the student body has won for him the respect and admiration of us all. MR. PRESTON LAWRENCE HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL Completing his twenty-seventh year as principal, Mr. Lawrence is the overseer of all happenings within the high school itself. Arranging schedules for students, the role of disciplinarian, and observing classes are just a few of his numerous duties. Mr. Lawrence's years of devoted service have resulted in a smoothly operating high school. 12 Methods for Achieving Them BOARD OF EDUCATION: SEATED: Mr. William Essig, Clerk; Mr. Wilford Day, Mr. Paul Drury. Balanced meals are the chief concern of these ladies. Although many of these women are mothers of Jackson students, they spend the greater part of the day preparing hot lunches for the students. These queens of the culinary art work in a clean, sanitary kitchen turning out nutritious meals. The students at Jackson appreciate their fine work. The clean, pleasant atmosphere at Jackson can be accredited to the custodians. These nine men are re- sponsible for the condition of the buildings and grounds. Most students don't realize the time and work spent by these men in the maintenance of the building. More consideration and appreciation should be given to these men. MAINTENANCE STAFF SEATED: Alfred Himer, Glen Yant. STANDING: Elmer Guis- singer, Ralph Gross, Henry Combs, William Hopkins, Charles Warner, Wilbur Huthmacker, Fred Lorenz. 25 CLASSES Within the past two and one-half decades many per- sonable students have passed through these hallowed halls. Their decided marks of dis- tinction still remain either with the teaching staff or with their classmates. No matter how much we proclaimed our dislike for homework, tests, report cards, and discipline, the day of graduation brings with it a ring of finality and we quick- ly review our high school days with a wave of nostal- gia. 27 Efficient Officers and Advisors Led Us SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: Elaine Martin, Vice President; Larry Whitacre, Treasurer; Ronnie Emhoff, President; Jeanne Halter, Secretary. Entering the halls of Jackson as freshmen, the Class of 1963 quickly became acquainted with high school life. Remember our freshman year? A little disorganized perhaps but fun. Joining various activities, sell- ing stationery and ordering our class jackets, were the highlights of our first year. Bake sales, car washes and other projects characterized our sophomore year, along with the thrill of receiving our class rings. During our junior year we worked even harder to show the seniors how beautiful a prom could be— and we certainly showed them! On May 18 the ballroom of the Onesto Hotel was transformed for a stroll down Primrose Lane. At last the long awaited year arrived. During that year we had many things to look forward to—including the senior prom, Winter in the Alps, held at the Sachsenheim Club on December 29. And finally. Com- mencement. Whether, after graduation, we pursue our education or secure an occupation, we will carry with us the many happy memories of our high school years. The Senior Class wishes to express its sincere gratitude to our advisors, Mrs. Linin- ger, Mrs. Baxter, and Mr. Berg. With patience and understanding they have guided us through our high school years. 28 Through Four Years of Highlights and Shadows JANICE AGAN Commercial DAN ARDELEAN College Prep THOMAS ALTLAND Technical MIKE ANDREWS College Prep CHRIS ARIGONI College Prep LESLIE BADERTSCHER General KAREN BAIRD Liberal Arts ANNETTE BENDER General ERNIE BAICH General RONALD BENDER Technical 29 As Freshmen We Thought We Knew It All CAROL BENZ College Prep JAN BOEBINGER College Prep PAAA BIXLER Stenographic LINDA BLACKSTONE College Prep JOHN BOERNER College Prep DAVE BORON General DAN BRAUCHER General FLOYD BRISBANE General VIOLET BROOKS Home Economics PATSY BROWN Vocational 30 But “You’re Never Too Old to Learn” FRED BRUMBAUGH Technical PAT COMBS General JACKIE BRUMBAUGH College Prep BILL BURTON Technical RICH CONAWAY College Prep SUE CORBETT College Prep ALLEN CRAWFORD College Prep SUSAN CRISP College Prep WAYNE CRAIG College Prep DAN DAHLBERG General 31 During Our Sophomore Year W KAREN DREW College Prep RONNIE EMHOFF College Prep MARTY DAVIS Liberal Arts MARTY ECKERT Technical BILL DAY Technical KAREN ETLING College Prep JOHN FIERSTOS College Prep GENE FLINN General PHYLLIS FLOOM General YVONNE GARAUX Commercial 32 Finally Got Into the Swing of Things SUSIE GRANT College Prep SHARON GRIFFIN Commercial BONNIE HAER Stenographic SANDY GRAYBILL Liberal Arts BEVERLY HALTER College Prep 33 Jackets and Class Rings JEANNE HALTER Liberal Arts BONNIE HARPER Liberal Arts WAYNE HAMERSLEY General GEORGE WILLIAM HANES College Prep JOHN HARPER General BRUCE HENZE College Prep SANDRA HARTMAN Commercial LARRY HICKLE General BRUCE HARRIS Technical RAY HEITGER General 34 Highlighted Our Sophomore Year ROSALIND HORNING College Prep SUSAN HOWE Mixed DAVE HORTON College Prep DENNY HOSTETLER Technical BILL HOWENSTINE General DEAN HUTHMACHER Liberal Arts STEVE JOBE Liberal Arts CAROLYN JOHNSON Liberal Arts JUDY IVINS Commercial SCOn JOLLIFF Technical 35 Our Junior Year Presented Many DAN KECK General BRIDGET KRAIG College Prep ROY KERSHAW Technical JOHN KLINGE College Prep JERRY LANDIS General BARBARA LeBARRE Commercial JADE LUTHI Home Economics ELAINE MARTIN College Prep JIM LEONARD Technical MIKE McCORMICK Technical Opportunities for “High-Financing” 37 Seniors Experience Some Remorse JANET QUASS College Prep HELEN REICOSKY Commercial HOWARD RENNECKER College Prep GARY RICHESON General MIKE RICKER General 38 in Seeing Final Sports Events 39 Tests and Themes Add Turmoil MAR SPACH College Prep JAMES STENTZ College Prep BEVERLY SPONSELLER Commercial LYNN SWONGER Commercial BILL STURM General 40 to Trials and Tribulations BILL THOMAS General SANDRA VERNON College Prep JUDY TURNS Commercial LINDA ULM College Prep DOUG WALLENHURST Technical DAVE WE I OMAN General JIM WHEELER General College Prep LARRY WELCH General TERREE WILHELM Liberal Arts 41 CHIP WILLAMAN Liberal Arts KAY WOLFE Commercial Portraits, Proms, “Pomp and Circumstance’ DONNA WILLIAMS College Prep DAVID ZIESMER College Prep EILEENE WILLIAMS College Prep RON ZINTZ General 42 Present Perfect Picture of Our Senior Year Four of our more popular senior girls, Ernie Baich, Ben Prato, Jim Wheeler, and Fred Puente, dance to a song sung by Jack Hickle. STUDENT LIFE If a poll were taken, most of the students, both of today and of twenty-five years ago, would probably agree that a very important part of life at Jackson includes rallies, dances, assemblies, plays, and anything else that helps enliven the daily routine. Looking back over these activities, one's student life will have offered some of the fondest memories of their en- tire school days. 69 Senior MR. BRUCE HARRIS MR. LARRY WHITACRE MR. Here's a rare picture—senior class advisor, Mr. Berg, smiling! Senior Prom This year's senior prom, with the theme Winter in the Alps, was held at the Sach- senheim Club on December 29th. The seniors and their dates had a wonderful time dancing from eight until twelve to the music of Duane Haines and his orchestra. A smor- gasbord dinner added to the enjoyment of the evening. Following the dance, the movie If a Man Answers was shown at the Weslin Theater. The seniors then went bowling at Lincoln- Way Lanes and were served coffee and doughnuts. Not only the students enjoyed the dinner at the Sachsenheim Club! Mr. and Mrs. Sweterlitsch, Mr. and Mrs. Davidson, and Mr. and Mrs. Lininger attended the Senior Prom. 74 Just “Ask Any Girl” Left to right: Claire Stayer, Don Ackley, Juanita Brady, Holly Gessner, Bruce Casper, Lynda Smith, Rich Gradijan, Jim O'Connor, Dee Dennis, Ronnie Emhoff, Judy Price, Lonna Wildman, Kathie Douglas, Joyce Savchenko, Roberta Weltlich, Holly Behrendt. All Class Play Ask Any Girl, the first all class play ever presented at Jackson, was held by the Belles and Beaus on November 16 and 17. The story tells of Meg, a sweet girl from a small town, who falls in love with a devil-may are head of a great New York advertising agency. In order to catch him, Meg turns herself into a composite girl- taking the characteristic he likes from each of his many girlfriends. She is soon being avidly sought by him, but now she's fallen in love with the man she asked to help plan her campaign. Since these two men are brothers, it's confusing—but very funny. The play was skillfully directed by Miss Rutter and her assistant Judi Garratt. Meg Wheeler ..................... Dee Dennis Mr. Wheeler ................. Don Ackley Mrs. Wheeler .............. Tom' Cats, composed of Jackson and Sauder male faculty members, harmonized for the stu- dent body at the Christmas assembly. Just what I wanted—a seeky!' Aw gee, Santa—for me?' 76 One of the highlights of the Christmas assem- bly was a processional by the Choir. Familiar Sights A welcome addition at Jackson this year was the pop machine, obtained by the Student Council. You can't keep a good man down! Smarts reign over Study Hall 104. 77 At a basketball rally the cheerleaders in- dicate the wish of everyone. Here We See Some Candid Shots A new outlook on books was given this year by the Escape, Jackson's paperback bookstore. Mr. Don Pleis, a student teacher, assisted Mr. Sweterlitsch this year. Mr. Hal Harrison gave an interesting talk on The coat-check girls look as intelligent as always! his trip down the East Coast. 78 Around the Halls of Jackson 79 cM h MJTO club ORGANIZATIONS Throughout any span of time changes are inevitable. It has been particularly notice- able in our extra-curricular ac- tivities. In the early forties, Jackson sponsored such clubs as Future Farmers of America, a Hobby Club, and a Photog- raphy Club, in addition to choir, band, plays, etc. These activities were ex- panded to include a National Honor Society, Language Clubs, a Student Council and many more. The ultimate goal of all or- ganiations has remained the same—to encourage youth in developing leadership, acquir- ing fellowship, and building character. 81 Of the Students, by the Students, and for the Students ROW 1: Barb Beadling, Diane Graening, Barb Johnson, Kathy Willaman, Nancy Ross, Linda Knisley, Johnnye Lewis, Donna Williams. Even the girls are coming into their own in the fields of basketball and golf. Through athletics we can develop physically as well as mentally. Sportsmanship, and cooperation are assets gained which can be applied to other walks of life. Close scores, the romps, and even the losses round out the memories of school which are carried through life. THESE ARE THE BUILDERS OF MEN GRID HISTORY Football took on a new look at Jackson this year. Included in this new look were a new head coach, Mr. Andy Steve, new staff, and new bleachers. Speed and agility were stressed to make up for the lack of size, which the Polar Bears meet in every outing. The success of the team rested on desire—speed—intelligence which was evident in the 8-1-1 record, one of the school's finest. The ability to rebound after the defeat to Canton South showed the desire that the members had. The loss of twenty-five seniors will put an added burden for next year's squad. We of the Scoop staff would like to wish next year's squad as much success as this year's. 112 Mr. Fenton, Mr. Garner, Mr. Steve (Head Coach), Mr. Reese, Mr. Poorman, Mr. Roan. Attendance records were shattered this year as the Polar Bears played some of the outstanding teams in the area. Ernie Baich won the Class AA scoring title this season with 188 points in twelve games. The team had a few disappointing setbacks this season but managed to finish with a 9-9 record. The Bears ended up with 8 victories against 4 defeats in regular sea- son action. This year's team was spotted with underclassmen in 7 of the 11 weight classes. This fact gives high hopes to the grapplers of the future in Jackson's newest and fastest growing sport. The next instant one of the twigs lunged forward. The ’hopper was clamped in a pair of vise-like arms. The Praying Mantis, twig-shaped hunter of the insect world, began to dine. Natural camouflage is not restricted to insects. Human twigs”, too, disguise their deadliness. Communists look and act and talk just like other people. If we as individuals cannot penetrate the Com- munists’ disguise, how can we possibly combat them? The answer is so simple it is widely ignored. We can keep them out of positions of trust, where they can really harm us—simply by being in those positions of trust ourselves. It means that many more of us must make the same kind of extra effort the Communists will- ingly make. It means ordinary citizens getting into active politics, joining civic organizations, doing the jobs the Communists would like to do. It means work, no two ways about it. But if true Americans don’t do it. Communists gladly will. And it’s work by which we could provide a powerful defense against our perfectly-disguised enemies, the Communists. Junior Class Play CAST: Bob Horst, Larry; Kent Reed, Dan; Jeff Simon, Joe Scales; Lynda Smith, Martha; Sue Wright, Anne; Bruce Simpson, Bill; Stella Marinakas, Mrs. Fitzgerald; Greg Cartiea, Fred; Don Ackley, Dr. Burton; Nancy Perault, Miss Brill; Susan Rees; Lillian; Steve Breyfogle, Mr. Gilbreth; Kay Strock, Mrs. Gilbreth; Bob Format, Jackie; Mary Jo Zettler, Ernestine; Steve Ayers, Frank. “Cheaper by the Dozen” Joe Scales, alias Jeff Simon, leads some of the Gilbreth family in a well- known school cheer. Cheaper by the Dozen, a true story of a family with twelve children living in the Roaring Twenties Era, was pre- sented by the Junior Class and directed by Miss Rutter and her assistant, Jeana Mackley, on April 19 and 20. The Gilbreth family is headed by a stern but loving father, an efficiency ex- pert, who applies his time-saving tech- niques to raising his dozen children. But when he tries to convince his seventeen- year-old daughter Anne that boys, silk stockings, make-up, etc., are a waste of time, he gets absolutely nowhere, and a series of humorous and heart-warming events follows. The play is brought to a tragic climax when Dad, although he has been warned about his bad heart, de- parts for Europe to make a speech on efficiency, a trip from which he and his family know he will never return. Miss Brill tests Anne to see if she is prepared for an early graduation. Choir Musical Li’l Abner On March 28 and 29 the Jackson High Choirs, directed by Mr. Alex- ander Lewis, presented the famous Broadway musical, Li'l Abner ' When Li'l Abner agrees to let Daisy Mae catch him in the Sadie Hawkins Day race, she is overjoyed. However, several complications, in- cluding the proposed dropping of an atom bomb on Dogpatch, Yokum- berry Tonic, and a certain millionaire named General Bullmoose, interfere. But all's well that ends well, and in the end, although there is some doubt as to who's marrying whom, Daisy Mae and Li'l Abner finally do get married. Daisy Mae, Li'l Abner, Mammy and Pappy Yokum.
