jjaclzAan Memorial cMixjJi School ?. 4?. 2 . 3, Matedllon, Ohio nineteen hun d ed an nine U U U UI It seems like only yesterday since, tanned from the summer sun, you entered again the world of book, desk, and homework, doesn't it? That first day . . . you were aware of freshly-waxed floors, gleam- ing windows, and maybe . . . smaller desks. Then, suddenly, it seemed that the year was almost over. You sat in the stifling classroom, wish- ing with all your heart that you were outside in the warm air of the first spring days. The year had gone . . . Because we of the annual staff feel this way too, we have chosen for our theme How the Time Flies. It is this unselfish attitude which causes us to express our appreciation to the mem- bers of the faculty—our friends. H. C. Saucier Superintendent Anyone who is familiar with Jackson High School is also familiar with the quiet, friendly man who is our superin- tendent. Commander-in-chief of the operation of grade school, junior high, and high school, Mr. Sauder successfully combines his wealth of experience with common sense in carrying out his many duties. P. M. Lawrence Principal Junior high and high school students alike respect Mr. Lawrence as the keeper of law and order. Possessed with an uncanny sense of timing, Mr. Lawrence has collared many an unsuspecting cul- prit and led him back to the straight and narrow. He also finds time for the efficient handling of the many other responsibilities of his job. 10 Mrs. June Lorenz, Secretary Mr. William Essig, Clerk-Treasurer Roc uH l CrduxxMxwL Secretaries: Mrs. Betty Keck Miss Jackie Young SEATED: Mr. Tilton, Vice-Presi- dent; Mr. Bent, President; Mr. Essig, Clerk. Often this identification is taken for granted until the final year, when being a senior becomes a matter of distinction and pride. Setu iA, CLASS OFFICERS Barb Disler, President Judi Swartout, Recording Secretary Joan Lee, Corresponding Secretary Dave Mobberly, Vice-President Bob Hartzell, Treasurer It gathered speed and before we realized, it was over. The last-minute adjusting of cap and straightening of gown, and we were ready for the bjg night . . . Commencement marked the end of four years of high school training; it meant also the end of hectic weeks of prom planning, exam cramming, and general confusion among the seniors. It was a night of reminiscing. Our freshman year—a little disorganized perhaps, but fun. Bake sales, car washes and other projects characterized our sophomore and junior years as we concentrated upon making money to show the seniors how beautiful a prom could be . . . and we certainly showed them! Almost before we knew it, we were seniors, and facing the future with the traditional mixture of appre- hension and anticipation. The year flew by—crowded with senior activities and the successful production of My Sister Eileen in the fall, and ending in the solemn dignity of Graduation Night. Mrs. Baxter and Mr. Davidson The Senior class wishes to express its sincere appreciation to Mrs. Lois Baxter and Mr. Norwood Davidson, who became our advisors this year in the absence of Mrs. Knowles. With patience and understand- ing they have guided us through our final year, and we are grateful. 18 Henry Aegerter: Class Play 4; Hi-Y I, 2, 3; Longfellow I. . . We proudly announce that Miss Sally McNutt has been chosen our first Miss Jacksonite. All senior girls with a 2.5 grade average were eligible to be candidates for this honor. Each member of the senior class voted for the five girls he felt had done the most for our school. Out of the top ten in this poll, the Troup Pluto Studio chose the five most photogenic girls. These girls were then asked to answer nine questions that required personal and honest answers. The questions and the five sets of answers were sent to Mr. Pat Boone, who chose the winner. «U MISS SALLY McNUTT 43 MiAA, jjaxdiAxMtite 1959 ... U takeA. ntoAe to taie well Ilian to- win. By the time school started, the 35 members of the varsity squad, including 12 seniors, were eagerly awaiting their first taste of action. On September 6, the Polar Bears met the Wildcats of Canton South in the football preview and defeated them 8-0. On September 12 in the season's opener, Jackson again came up against New Philadelphia. The Bears gave their fans an idea of what the rest of the season would be like by defeating the Quakers 16-6 and avenging last season's 21-19 loss. Orrville played host to Jackson on September 19 and it appeared that our team was well on the way to its second victory. Behind by a 22-8 count at half-time, the Red Riders roared back in the second half and clinched a 24-22 decision in the final two minutes of the game. Bouncing back from defeat, the Polar Bears overcame Canton Central Catholic with a 6-0 count the next week. Our first league game was with Glenwood on October 4. The Eagles scored the first touchdown in the game and it was also their last as the Polar Bears came out on top 32-8. Sandy Valley was the next team to be overpowered by the Bears. Our team defeated the Cardinals by a 22-14 score and took a firm hold on the AA league lead. 46 DAVE CLATTERBUCK Senior Linebacker fyoothall DEFENSIVE UNIT DICK STURM NED GUEST Junior Halfback Junior Halfback GEORGE WELTY Junior Linebacker VIC BERTONI Junior Linebacker JACK HITE Junior Guard .. — i BOB HARTZELL Senior Linebacker RONNIE BURTNETT Junior End LOREN BATES Senior Tackle HOWARD HEITGER Senior Tackle GARY BOSS Senior End At the Homecoming game on October 17, Jackson met Northwest, the AA defending champions. Fitting the occasion, the Polar Bears scalped the Indians 14-6 and gained revenge for the 13-0 upset last season. The stage was now set for what appeared to be the most important game of the season. Our team met second-place Perry on October 24 to decide the AA League champions. A Jackson victory would give us undisputed right to the crown, while a Perry win would make a two-way tie. For the first time this season the Bears found themselves behind at the half, but they rose to the occasion and defeated the Panthers 18-13. In the final game of the season North Canton Hoover finally turned the trick as they defeated Jackson 20-14. In this fashion the Jackson Polar Bears turned in another fine season, compiling a 6-2 record and regaining the Stark County AA crown. 47 VciMiLf, OFFENSIVE UNIT KIRK OARRAGH Senior Halfback BILL KEIFER Junior Fullback ALAN MATHENA Junior Quarterback LEO BORON Sophomore Halfback CARL STUHLDREHER Junior Guard DAN SECKLER Junior Center JOHN BLACKSTONE Junior Guard HARRY WOODEN Senior End TIM FLOOM Junior Tackle CHUCK STONER Junior Tackle RONNIE WILLIAMS Junior End 48 Varsity Coaches Andy Steve and Bob Fife inspect some equipment before storing it away at the end of a very successful football season. fyootball ROW I: John Fick, Kirk Darragh, Howard Heitger, Harry Wooden. Co-Captain, Bill Hunsinger, eludes two would-be tacklers in the North Canton game. Halfback, Tom Malinowski, pulls up from behind to halt this Central ball-carrier. 49 If Malinowski doesn't get this Central player. Hunsinger will. Some people find the oddest times to look for 4-leaf clovers. Once Burtnett gets that ball, he will be on his way. And he's going....................... Hunsinger seems to be snowed under in a mad attempt to cross that line. Wouldn't bet much on this Panther's chance as Hite. Weimer, Rohrer, and Heitger rush in to head him off. 50 Now that I've got it, what do I do with it? asks George Welty as a North Canton player lunges at him. Make yourself comfortable! This year's squad of pepetfes , consisting of five Varsity and four Reserve cheer- leaders, kept quite busy during the football and basketball seasons. Besides leading cheers at the games, the cheerleaders were in charge of the rallies, made up new cheers, chants, and skits, and made the clever posters seen in the halls and at the rallies. Under the excellent supervision of Mrs. Lois Baxter, the girls learned to mix business with pleasure. It was this attitude that helped to encourage the teams to the successful seasons that they had. Her® a glimpse is caught of the busy life of a cheerleader, which includes making posters for the football and basketball seasons. 57 DAVE MOBBERLY Senior RICH DAVIS Junior RONNIE HOLMES Senior Despite a poor season the Polar Bear cagers continued to draw very good crowds. feoAJzeihcM, NED GUEST Junior DAVE HOSTETLER Junior JACK HITE Junior And then there are those days when nothing seems to go right. Even thought at first glance this year's basket- ball record doesn't appear to be impressive we had a thrilling season. We came out second place in the Class AA League after Perry eked out a two-point victory over us. In the Canton Sectional Tournament, we advanced to the second round where we were defeated by Canton McKinley. Letters were awarded to all Varsity players and plaques were given to the senior members at the basketball banquet which was held at the Fulton House on March 23. At this banquet, Rich Davis was named Most Improved Player and Dave Mob- berly received the award to the player making the most foul shots. It was also announced that WHBC had elected Ronnie Holmes as Jackson's most valuable player. One addition this year was the paper's motto, The Voice of the Polar Bear. Advertising was the main source of income. Support was also received from patrons. In addition to these, subscription sales, two staff- sponsored dances, a bake sale, and the sale of candy helped to balance the books. SEATED: Daneen Schiltz, Ellie Sibila, Helen Yingling. Lee Underwood, editor-in-chief; Gordon Wyles, business manager; Mr. Cecil Ramga, advisor; Kay Lemasters, typist; and Sally McNutt, senior editor, look over some prospects. Staff photographer, Barf Cable explains some pictures to junior editors, Barb Cor- bett, Shirley LeBeau, and Barb Zintz, and sophomore photographer, Bill Schroeder. Work on the 1959 Scoop officially began in August, 1958, but three members of the staff had attended a journalism workshop at Ohio University in June. By November the groundwork was finished and work had begun. After much discussion, we selected a cover and theme. Soon after Christmas vacation, pictures began to come back and page lay- outs and copy were turned in. It was an- nounced that this year there would be a spring supplement, as well as several other changes. The April IOth deadline rolled around and the book was sent to the printer. MY SISTER EILEEN When the Sherwood girls, Eileen and Ruth, came to Greenwich Village, no one could have fore- seen the strange and amusing events which would involve them. Their drab little studio was constantly being invaded by strange characters of all sorts—the Wreck, who never touched a drop—during football season, and Appopolous, whose dabblings in art often brought about a blue-green or red-red mon- strocity. An international incident was barely avoided when half the Brazilian navy arrived to form a conga line in the girls flat. But Eileen turned on the charm, and the disaster was avoided. Once again the Choral Club, under the direction of Mrs. Rohrbaugh, spent a year busy with re- hearsals and performances. Their music at the holi- day assemblies made us feel more deeply the true meaning of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. On Friday, February 20, they sang with the massed chorus in the annual Stark County Music Festival in the Canton Memorial Auditorium. Our group was represented that evening in the Select Chorus by Marta Alexander, Gail Hopkins, and Don Stump. This year's colorful Spring Festival, the club's biggest project, was held May 15. 87 '«MW ottiCflt, .. tlte futuAe UadeAA a td nefxAeA ttcUioeA. of 0«A 'Lcltooi. Bliss Company wishes to extend congratulations to you, the Class of 1959. You are now faced with a choice—-whether to continue your education or to enter the business world. Whatever your decision may be, it is important to realize that you are on the threshold of a new frontier. The day of rugged individualism, when a man could carve a living out of the wilderness with his bare hands, has long since given way to the less tangible frontiers. Inherent in the new frontiers is the need for a different type of individualism. We like to call it educated individualism. A scholarship program for high school graduates who enter the engineering field is one of the methods used by the E. W. Bliss Company to develop educated individualism. Such an approach enables us to say with pride that BLISS IS MORE THAN A NAME........IT'S A GUARANTEE! FRED E. HANN EXCAVATING CONTRACTOR H. W. HAWLEY INC. BORN in America—so he has freedom of speech. He's ex- pressing it already—and he can go right on criticizing, discuss- ing, debating for the rest of his life here. Nobody's ever going to tell him to shut up! Imagine the difference, had he been born in a Communist coun- try. He'd never be able to criti- cize anything. He couldn't sound off about taxes, government, job, prices, criticize public officials. Why not? Well, if he did he'd be shot. We hope he becomes a good, honest, sincere critic. We hope he'll always stand right up and defend his rights. We hope he’ll never be afraid to turn the spot- light on wrongs — so someone will take steps to right them. Be- cause that’s the American way, and it’s an American right guar- anteed by the Constitution. It's a freedom, and we're all born to it. One thing we know: the rest of us aren't going to let anyone come in and rob him of this right, until he grows up and can defend it for himself. We aren’t going to trade our freedoms— any of them—for Iron Curtain conditions. Will you stand up and defend your freedom of speech? If you do, nobody can ever take it away from you. With this page, eight months of hectic work are ending. During this time, we have tried to do our best to produce an annual that you will like and of which you will be proud. We have tried several new ideas and we hope that we have improved on a number of the old ones. I want to thank the students and teachers who have put up with us while we were taking pictures and causing other confusion, as well as the members of the staff for their co- operation during the past year. Our special thanks go to Troup and Pluto Studio and to the Seiple Lithograph Company for their aid and advice in completing the 1959 SCOOP. Best of luck to next year's staff. I hope they have as much fun as we did this year. Sincerely, LEE UNDERWOOD Editor Seni i Awa uHi i PEGGY ZAHLER Outstanding Typist MARTHA ROHR James H. Herbert Commercial Award LINDA CLARK Secretarial Award Chosen as this year's outstanding commercial student, Miss Linda Clark was presented with a copy of the Standard Handbook for Secretaries , the gift of the Massillon Chapter of the National Secretaries Association. Linda had passed her 120-words-a- minute shorthand test on new, un- previewed dictation with 98 per cent accuracy. On the basis of her progress and achievement in the commercial de- partment, Miss Martha Rohr received the James H. Herbert Commercial Award which is given by the Harter Bank and Trust Company. Martha exhibited qualities of scholastic de- pendability, personality, cooperation, and character, as well as maintaining a good attendance record. A medallion, presented through the Underwood Awards program. was awarded to Miss Peggy Zahler as the Best Typist of the year. Peggy had reached a speed of 69 correct words per minute on a five-minute writing with 5 or less errors. Bob Randles received the John Philip Sousa Award for his outstanding work in the band, where he has played first chair trumpet for 5 years. This past year he served as president and student director of the band, and he also has his own dance band. This honor was awarded Bob on the basis of his musicianship, his co- operation, and his faithful attendance at all band activities. Miss Marianne Kirk was presented with the National Arion Foundation Music Award for her accomplishments on the clarinet and her attendance and cooperation in the band. She has received many music honors during her high school career, including holding first chair in the concert band for 4 years, and playing with the select bands at Northwest and Baldwin-Wallace College. As a senior she was a majorette. e u i AumaaJU Miss Bonnie Kelly, on the basis of her score in the D. A. R. test, became this year's Good Citiien. She received a pin and a certificate for her knowledge of American history and her national loyalty. Chosen for the honor by the administration and the faculty, Lee Underwood was named the Outstanding Senior of the Class of 1959. The award, a watch, was presented to him on the basis of his cooperation, char- acter, courtesy, and civic leadership by Mr. Sauder. DAVE MOBBERLY BARBARA DISLER Danforth Award Danforth Award As the young man and young woman who have exhibited distinct qualities of leadership in diversified fields, Dave Mobberly and Miss Barbara Disler were chosen to receive copies of William H. Danforth s inspirational book I Dare You. This award was made possible this year by the Danforth Foundation. Camme+tceme+it Four years of high school suddenly came to an end for one-hundred-four students at Jackson Memorial High School on Friday evening, May 29, 1959. Dressed in black and white, the members of the graduating class marched into the auditorium to the somber notes of Pomp and Circumstance. The salutatory, valedictory, and commencement addresses were presented . . . LEE UNDERWOOD Salutatorian SALLY McNUTT Valedictorian . . . As the class of 1959 assembled fogefher for fhe last fime. And suddenly if was all over. Names were called, diplomas were presented . . . The fountain in the entrance hall seems to add a certain amount of enchantment in fulfilling the name of the prom, Une Belle Soiree Enchantee. J r Jackson's Senior boys pose proudly with their lovely dates. By examining Bob Hartzell's expression, we come to the conclusion that Joan Lee has told another one of her funny stories. There is obviously a great deal of difference in comparing the first dance of the year, the Homecoming Dance, with the last dance of the year, the Junior-Senior Prom. Rich Davis just goes out of his mind when the band swings into a fast number. National fyoA nAic Jlecu ue This year proved to be a very successful one for the National Forensic League. Among their numerous accomplishments, the club quite deservingly received a first place in their district for the play. Under the excellent supervision of Mr. Joseph Poling, the club made a good record for our school throughout the whole year in the field of speech. Mr. Poling is shown giving awards to the outstanding Speech students. It takes a lot of hard work to receive any glory. Here we see Allen Weber, Jim Angle, Carol Cogan, and Nancy Gessner rehearsing a scene from the play. Bob Bender, Dick Sheehan, Terry Ulm, Judy Clatterbuck, and Wanda Harper polish up a few rough spots which helped to make the play a winner. 1959 fjuswM' GladA Play From left to right are the cast members: Mrs. Bradman .....Linda Bartlco Dr. Bradman ...... Being visible only to Charles, Elvira hated Ruth and caused much trouble between the two. In a scheme to kill Charles so that they could be together again, Elvira killed Ruth instead. Madame Arcati discovered a way to send the ghosts of both wives back to wherever Elvira came from and Charles was quite relieved. But before Ruth and Elvira left, they got even with Charles by knocking down pictures, smashing vases, and wrecking the house. The Juniors presented Blithe Spirit on April 10 and II, 1959. Mr. Edgar Ensminger was the director. Charles asks Elvira to prove to the skeptical Ruth that she is really in the room by carrying across the room the bowl of flowers from the mantel.
