A sail boat, a congenial crew, bathing suits and a picnic lunch are the only props necessary to make it a day of complete con- tent. -. ., .. 'i'- 5 BQEM i s i ff'4fl'w I After a glorious day with feel- I ings running high and friendship at its peak, we gather around a crackling campfire. Singing to- gether, faces lit not only by the dancing flames, but also by the warm glow within, we agree that the day has come to a perfect end. 2 L c ml. When vacation begins the stu- dents of Jackson High set out to explore summer's many wonders. They soon discover that a cool fresh morning is ideal for 18 holes of golf. Of course, some people prefer to play by their own rules. Old Sol beams brightly on a ripple-free lake. The motor starts, the skipper shouts, and soon you are flying over the water. The exhileration of water-skiing, fall- ing off and getting dunked, and rising for another run is just right on a summer afternoon. Sports are not the only pursuits explored by vacationing students. Many also explore that vast green growth, while pushing the famil- iar lawn mower. A 61-imful of tl-aaJeL work, and play. -Q 5 l , 4 A W? gi if , ,,., Q, J inlaid ' .. Barb Smith and Bill Millerlile, Viking leaders for the first semester, organized the annual Booster parade which was the kickoff for an exciting football season. X F312 Forward, ever forward the brave Vik- ings marched. To conquer, to lose, to rise and build again. Together, the Viking mural and the trophy case portray the essence of Jackson High School. Symbols of the Jackson Viking are ever present, yet none are more inspiring than the students themselves. Seniors realize that Jackson High is the school of the Vikings because the students make it so. 5. e 2 E 3 H 5 L ! .M .. , , .W , V... W , ,, ., ..,A .,,,,M W ., .WN ,... W T .v.A N...v.. Earl Holman and Royal F. Dressel, Principal and assistant prin- cipal respectively, Jackson High school again com- pleted a successful school year. This was made possible by the enthusiastic work of our capable faculty. Throughout the year these people are called upon to advise various groups, help during the decorating for parties, chaperone these parties, and star in those great magazine assemblies. Members of the faculty willingly give their time to serve the students in these capacities. ROYAL DRESSEL Assistant Principal The counselors are always available to help students with vital questions. They give us infor- mation about colleges and vocations, counselling on these and other problems and giving advice on program elections. The nurses are present to care for students who become ill while in school, to administer various screening tests, and to prevent illness through education. In addition to planning and delivering lessons which will stimulate the thinking and mold the minds of future citizens, the ninety members of the faculty End time to give extra help to students who need it. Barb has proved herself worthy of her office in every way. She has led the hostess, hall guide, and social committees with efiiciency and tact. She has graciously fulfilled her duties as Jackson High's oflicial hostess. She has aided Bill and done her best to make his job as president easier. She has planned the dances and all-school parties with great success. Yet no matter how busy she may be, Barbara,s exuberant charm convinces others that she finds her job enjoyable and rewarding. The students congratulate you, Barbara Smith, for all you have done to make Jackson High school a school of which we can all be proud. of the Student Kodq, guided As president for the first semester, Bill Millerlile did much to help the school year begin smoothly, and to welcome the new students. His vitality and enthusiasm in organizing the Booster parade helped to make it the biggest ever. This enthusiasm has been an aid to Bill in carrying out his duties and responsibilities as the leader of the student body. Bill's warm, friendly personality makes him an excellent representative of Jackson High School at league conferences and inter-school meetings. His efliciency as a committee chairman has en- abled the Student Council, the All Sports committee, and the Constitution Revision committee to make great progress. His interest in the students has helped them to feel a part of Jackson High School. Student fem and Home room X Student Council From our Student Representative Assembly, two members of the Sophomore class, two members of the Junior class, and one member of the Senior class are elected to serve on the Student Council for one semester. Policies are formulated and decisions concerning the school activities are made by our Student Council. This year, a reporter from the Citizen Patriot has been attending the meetings and reporting interesting happenings to the people of Jackson. The Student Council always does a wonderful job, for which we say thank you. However, the real thanks is deserved by the students of the school who elect these responsible leaders to represent them in student government. ,maiden ta, law teuea and hall Hostess The Hostess Club of Jackson High School performs a very important function for our school. This is the 5th straight year that Coach Kiesel has had a winning team. At the beginning of the season what the team might have lacked in experience it made up in desire to win. Throughout the season the line played excellent ball and held its own against all op- ponents. Jackson also had excellent depth in the backfield under the quarterbacking of Keith Brinkerhoff and Dick Nixon. 34 Jackson 14- Dearborn 12 With Jackson in a kicking situation, fourth down and two minutes to go, it looked like the Vikings were doomed to a 12-12 tie. However, John Kistka's fifty yard punt, which bounced out of bounds on the Dear- born one yard line, changed all of that. With first and ten to go on their one, Dearborn tried to run the ball up the center but were stopped at the line of scrim- mage. On the second try a determined Viking line, led by Ed Youngs, smashed through the Dearborn line and smothered the Dearborn quarterback in his own end zone for the two points that won the game. ?oot6a1l and cf-oAA-country team Jackson 12 OW0550 0 Early in the first quarter of the game, Joe Penn took a handoff from Nixon and romped for 92 yards through the Owosso defense for Jackson's first touchdown. Breedlove took Owosso's kickoff opening the second half and ran 83 yards for another touchdown. However this run was called back to the Owosso 32 for clipping. The Viking line played very well yielding only two first downs in the entire game, both by rushing. At the same time the jackson backfield gained a total of 227 yards. ?vot6all Jackson 7 Eastern 26 For the first time in 14 years, Jacksorfs Vikings bowed to a strong Lansing Eastern team. This week was espe- cially bad for the Vikings, for the team was way below par due to many cases of the flu which riddled the team. Jackson's only score came in the fourth quarter with Jim Thomas capping a 68-yard drive with a bril- liant 33-yard run. Thomas also helped pull Jackson out of a tight situation. With fourth down and 25 yards to go, Thomas took a handoff from quarterback Keith Brinkerhoff and ran for 35 yards before he was finally pulled down. l l 35 -- -- - , practice or weelw fefvre the .demon Jackson Kalamazoo 6 Jackson's 33 points were the largest margin ever scored by the Vikings in the history of the series. Leon Duffield, a junior fullback, had a very profitable night on the gridiron. It all started in the first quarter with Duffield picking up a Maroon Giant punt on the Jack- son seven and, with beautiful blocking, ran 93 yards for Jackson's first touchdown. In the second quarter with the Viking line functioning very well, Donn Gresso, running from fullback, took the ball for a 66-yard ride to score another Jackson touchdown. Again in the fourth quarter, Duflield took a punt and returned it for 60 yards and another touchdown. 36 jackson 28 Sexton 6 The Vikings continued their winning ways by beating the visiting Lansing Sexton before 3700 fans. Jackson went all the way the first time it took the ball on offense, moving 34- yards in only seven plays. Fullback Donn Gresso covered the final three yards for the tally. The second quarter belonged to Jackson's powerful lit- tle halfback, Jim Thomas, as he twice broke loose for 65 yard runs and a touchdown each time. jackson led 21-0 at half-time. During the third quarter, Sexton managed to hold the Vikings scoreless. Their only touchdown was scored at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Jackson followed with a final touchdown, driving 62 yards before Quarterback Keith Brinkerhoff dove from the 2 yard line to make the score. Halfback Jim Pequet converted after all four Jack- son TD's. al-Aitg Jegimf. It all pulp off in gameai Jackson 6 Battle Creek 19 The statistics show that Jackson outplayed the Bear- cats in every department except fumbles. Jackson fum- bled five times losing four of these to the opponent. Jackson's lone touchdown was scored by Bill Jackson, former guard who was playing his first game at fullback. The Viking's ground attack was well executed with the Vikings gaining 178 yards while the Viking line held the Battle Creek backfield to 136 yards rushing. ?oot6a I JACKSON O ANN ARBOR 7 Nearly 3500 loyal fans braved a cold, 45 m.p.h. wind to see the final game of the season, between traditional rivals. ' Ann Arbor took the opening kickoff and crunched out 73 yards in 16 plays for the game's only score. jackson got its first big break in the third quar- ter when guard Bob Powell recovered an Ann Arbor fumble on the AA 21 yard line. The Vik- ings then drove down to the 3, but on the fourth down quarterback Keith Brinkerhoff was unable to gain the needed yardage and the Pioneers took the ball. Later in the game Thomas broke loose and ran 36 yards before he was knocked out of bounds on the Ann Arbor 18. Toward the middle of October rumors of Viking were circulat- ing. Ideas and suggestions for the annual show were formulated, tryouts were held, preparation and practice began. After weeks of hard work, the day of perfor- mance arrived. People busily scurried about, putting on make- up and taking care of last minute details. The curtains opened on the Haunted House in the morning assembly on Friday, November 22, and again Friday and Satur- day night. Both Mr. Fall and Mr. Dressel spoke to the performers backstage. Then the lines marched down the hall and up the aisles of the auditorium, singing There's No Business Like Show Business. The show was on! make Magic it was. Haunted it was. Screams echoed and wisps of blue smoke trailed through the air. Dave Croysdale and his bus load of present day Vikings wandered into a haunted house seeking shelter after their bus had a flat tire. The erie abode of a vampire, Jay Alberstein, and his host of accomplices became the scene of one of the most exciting Viking shows ever. Challenged by the vampire, the present day Vikings matched their talent with the acts of the past. Skeletons and devils, witches and ghosts, and performers of all kinds presented a tremendous show. Yes, Viking is king! It is some- thing lived, something remem- bered, and best of all something to look forward to next year. the biking Alww 4 Aacceu 'i: :E5:'I51-'SI i T 1, fi-an wx, -, USZW ' f we . wait, . Coach George Mesko and his assistant Mr. Chuck Christensen plan to eliminate these weak- nesses in 1958. L........ Me. ,.,., 4..- , Ae.- 4.......-.-A.Ts. The job of selecting these students was left to the Class of '58. Each Most category had many names submitted and the job of counting the ballots was one of tension and anxiety. The students selected as 1958 person- alities had proved themselves worthy of their title throughout the years spent at Jackson High School.
