The tower entrance represents strength and quality in the structure of the school. Those who reinforce this strength and support this quality are the faculty. The Viking represents the spirit and pride of Jackson High stu- dents. Years ago the Viking sailed from his own country to seek new horizons and a higher goal. Through the pages of this yearbook are new horizons and higher goals which Jack- son High, in the same Viking spirit, achieved in 1955 and 1956, contribut- ing to the wealth of honors received down through the years. the UIQ, '7a1ffze Jaffa For many years Jackson High School has enjoyed its position as a leader among high schools in the state and in the nation. Much could be said for the Fine guidance and inspiration which has tradi- tionally been a characteristic of the administrators and the teachers, but our prestige could not have been attained and maintained with- out that continuous stream of individuals which constitutes the Student Body. The Student Body is a community which exists indefinitely as individuals join it and leave it. Each person in this unending flow of students has contributed to and absorbed from the association known as the Student Body. It is to this ever- changing community, to those who have gone before us, those presently comprising Jackson High School, and those who in the years to come will carry on the high standards of achievement we proudly uphold, that this Yearbook for nineteen hundred and fifty six is dedicated. 7a,Ueaf Uanienlfi aww, Sefubu, Zi , aealwwfi gfldfbh 0 gawk -M... 5 M, 5 -I U ' 'Q ima Q 2- 'Q if H' 14 ' ' V 'Hnnlu---q? 'ar m,,,,,, aww, For thirteen years Jackson High School has prospered under the able leadership of W. Earl Holman, Principal, and Royal F. Dressel, Assistant Principal. They are directly responsible for the smooth operation of our school. Both can be counted upon at any time for individual counseling with adjustment problems or edu- cational guidance, or assistance in any need. In addition to Mr. Holman and Mr. Dressel, Jackson High is fortunate to have five other student counselors who have been specially trained for their job. Next to the Student Body, the most important ele- ment in any school is its faculty. Our faculty is active in the Teachers' Club, a city-wide organization headed by Mr. R. W. Cooper. One of the most anticipated events of the faculty is its annual fall picnic held at the Girl Scout camp for the staff and their families. Besides their work in the capacity of teaching, our faculty willingly acts as advisors to many student affairs -from clubs to chorus line rehearsals. It is characteristic of the faculty to go above and beyond the call of duty wherever their assistance is desired. 1 WINIFRED ADAMS Hobby: newspaper work B.A. English GERALD BARNETT Hobby: woodworking B.A. M.A. History, Government, Economics International Relations DORIS CARDEW Hobby: cooking B.S. Emens, who was then assistant principal. From that time on, a governing group of students has grown to be one of the most important phases of school life at JHS. From each homeroom a student is elected to Student Representative Assembly for one semes- ter. Once a week and sometimes more frequently, the Assembly meets to discuss and decide issues that effect the whole school. From the Student Body a President and Vice President are elected who preside over Student Representative and Student Council meetings. Student Government undertakes or participates in many projects which are scheduled throughout the school year. The first this year was the Booster Parade whose success was notably greater than in previous years. Twice a year the Student Body is called upon to support the Reflector Bi-Weekly with semester subscriptions, and it is the Representatives of Student Government who are the salesmen. Again, it is the Student Reps who are the bookkeepers for each homeroom during the magazine cam- paign, and who do the collecting for Viking Giv- ing during the Hrst semester. For thirteen years Mr. Dressel has advised and greatly promoted Student Government. :SEK .1 -s ' I, if wifi I Shufenif Uauncil From the Student Representative Assembly, two Sophomores, two Juniors, and one Senior are elected to Student Council. The President and Vice President of the Student Body are presiding oflicers over all Student Council meetings. Policies and decisions concerning the school are the responsibility of the Council. Members of the Student Council serve as chairmen of the Building and Grounds, Inter-School Relations, Special, Social, Social Service, Ways and Means, and Publicity Committees. One member is chosen to act as secretary at the meetings. The Hostess Committee is elected by Student Council, and sponsorship of school dances as well as pep assemblies come under their jurisdiction. Viking Giving, the safe-driving campaign, and the magazine campaign are a few of the projects undertaken by our Student Government. FIRST ROW L to R: S. Hinkley B. Hall, H. Patch, P. For these things, Jackson High elected her as the first semester vice president. Mary organized the hall guide system efficiently in the beginning of the year and the system ran smoothly throughout the semester. She acted as head of the Hostess Committee and served as hostess at the dances held after the football games. Mary acquired many admirers and friends during her semester as vice president. whtwdzll Richard Hill became the student body president for the first semester and did much to help the new school year begin smoothly. The annual Booster parade, held after the first football game in the fall, was one of the most successful in years and much of the success was attributed to Dick. He took a great interest in careful driving and urged all students to participate in the safe driving cam- paign. During an Easter assembly, Dick made a memor- able speech in which he said, This morning I am not saying that world harmony will come, I'm only pointing out the one possible door through which it could enter, that door of Eternal love and understanding. Jackson High will always remember that speech and the president who made it. W , l i v i 1. . 5 3 ? These qualities helped him a great deal in his debate work and enabled him to turn in an excellent performance as M.C. of the Viking show. Before Ed became President, he was active in Student Repre- sentative Assembly as Treasurer and in Student Council as Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee. During her high school years, Phyllis has won the admiration and respect of the entire Student Body, by her active participation in Student Government, both in Student Representative Assembly and Student Coucil. As early as the tenth grade, Phyllis was elected to Hostess Committee, and before becoming Vice President, she served as Secretary of the Committee. These are only a few of the long list of activities Phyllis can claim. Truly, Phyllis Farris has not only maintained, but has uplifted the high standards past Vice Presidents have set, and future Vice Presidents will attain. FIRST SEMESTER SENIORS FIRST ROW L to R: N. A person thinks and acts upon impulse and absorbs and gives thought' witout even realizing that this is all part of a typical day. Every day made up of minutes and hours forms a week, a month, and then a year. You look back on that year and wonder what you contributed and received from every hour, day, and week. When you think about this past year, you remember an active year of sports, dances, government, elections, campaigns, assemblies, and, above all, your studies. A typical day in this great year might have begun with a slam of the hall locker and a hurried dash down the hall with your eye on the time and a load of books under your arm. Your studies in the typical day might have consisted of calcula- tions in geometry, eonjugations in a foreign language, experiments in chemistry, arpeggios in music, and discussions in American government. At the end of the day there is another slam of the hall locker and with the same load of books you hurry oFf to another activity. All these typical days blend into weeks and they turn into a successful year created by you, a student of Jackson High. .. Robinson. wad The Social Studies Club, under the ad- visorship of Mr. Barnett, is organized for those who enjoy exploring further into the historical and social background of our world. Foedus Amicitiae, translated from Latin to English, means bond of friend- ship. The organization is indeed a club where new and old members may make life long friendships. F oedus receives pleasure preparing food baskets and favors as their charitable need every month. Foedus is sponsored by the YWCA and was advised this year by Miss Rosen- berg. Guest speakers and movies provide information as well as entertainment and one of the speakers this year was David Wilkins, a former JHS student who spoke on his world trip. FIRST ROW L to R: L. In addition to work and study, the many social activities, sports events, and the thrill of graduation account for pleasant memories that last all through life. But there's one person in this picture who is generally overlooked, and it isn't until the student starts to make his way in the world that he fully appreciates how much his teacher or instructors meant to him.
