Bill Waller, Ierrv and lack Townley, and Bob Plaskett. lerrv Hark- ness, Bob Ford, Bob Kinle, Iack Sackreiter. Burt Iackson, and Ierrv Breese were some of the reasons that the defensive team clicked, Although the boys turned in but one victorv, all their losses were not onesided, The South Side of Fort Wayne game was exciting to the very end and the hard fought Lansing Eastern game ended in a tie. The rivalry with Ann Arbor was also a Well contested game, but Ann Arbor's allsstate team just out-powered Iackson's. However. true to tra- dition, the Iackson and Ann Arbor teams, cheerleaders, parents, and faculties were honored at a banquet following the game as another football season came to an end. One of the most outstanding games oi the season was the upset, 63-42, drubbing handed to the highly rated Kalamazoo team. Perhaps even more important was the victory over Ann Arbor in an exciting overtime game since this assured Iackson of a tie tor third place in the Five A League. Even though the team lost to Dearborn Fordson in the quarter finals We know that the combination oi team play, together with the spirit to win, changed a discouraging beginning into a great late sea- son rush. Our hats are oft to Mr. Ogden and the entire squad who gave everything they had to make this victorious ending possible. Although the wrestling team, coached by Mr. Bender, didn't have one of its best sea- sons, the wrestlers and their loyal fans had lots of spirit and we are sure they will have a winning team next year. Ken Sayles, Iohn Washburn, and Ed Thompson were the most impressive wrestlers on the squad. The team beat Battle Creek twice and forced Ann Ar- bor to go all out to Win. Iackson made a comeback and won fourth place in the state meet at East Lansing, which enabled them to finish the season in fine style. Whether he is talking to a large group of stu- dents, or just saying, to us in the halls, we know that he is our friend. His spirit of friendly cheerfulness and un- failing co-operation should long be an example for all of us to follow. Every student knows Mr. Dressel, either through Student Government, a personal problem, or as a friend and teacher. Charles Blair, a wonderful person who passed away last fall, was a rnan devoted to his work-teaching lackson High School boys and girls biology and guiding and instructing them in his favorite hobby, photography. His devotion to his Work is illustrated in the fact that for many years Mr. Blair was active in the Audubon Society and served as staff photographer for the Reflector Annual and Bi-Weekly. Most important was the organization of the new Hostess Com- mittee. The purpose of this committee is to serve at all school functions and to help the new students get acquainted with the school. And don't we all re- member the fun we had during the first semester at the all school dances: The Football Caper, The Dance Band Swing, The All Sports Party, and The Autumn Nocturne. They were all made possible through the combined efforts of Pat Smith and her social com- mittee. More than these accomplish- ments, however, Pat will be remem- bered by all for her friendliness and school spirit. CHARLES MALLOCH Sincerity, hard work, scholarship, and leadership all combined to make Charles Malloch's presidency a credit to lackson High School. His accom- plishments were many. Among them were his able presentation of our school government to our parents on our Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Open House, his competent guidance as leader of the delegation to the 5A conference, and his efforts and influence which re- sulted in the purchase of a new Ameri- can flag for the memorial case. He also did much to try to bring student govern- ment closer to all of the student body and contributed greatly to the success of the Viking Assembly. We owe our gratitude to Charles. The semester un- der his presidency will be remembered for its smoothness and efficiency. x I ll A ' f 1 . -.- .qv 5. , , ,, 1 If ' V' DIY. 4 l I E at 1 'J -K... Be- sides representing our school in many outside functions, he helped plan the pep meetings, and guided student gov- ernment in a competent manner. Bill's quiet and friendly spirit of cooperation seemed to create a fine spirit through- out the entire school. F' . , -- 1 4 -- r . The president and vice president of the Student Body are automatically officers of the Student Assembly and Student Coun- cil, While the secretary and treasurer are elected from the assembly at large. Tenth and eleventh graders choose two students to represent them on the Student Council and the l2th grade has one representative. One member of Student Council is elected secre- tary and the other members are chairman of one of the following committees: Social Serv- ice, Social, Publicity, Special, and Building and Grounds. Each student of the assembly is a member of one of these committees. During the year these committees have directed the Viking Giving, contributed mon- ey to the Navajo indians, Worked on car registration, studied parking lot problems, discussed a student traffic court, corresponded with different class A schools, sent represent- atives to the 5A Conference at Battle Creek, directed the Magazine Campaign, and the all sports banquet. All of these students working together and sharing their ideas helped to make our school one of the most outstanding in school spirit and cooperation in the state. ps Student Council- Znd Semester Standing tl. to r.i: R. Where are those pre-screens? These familiar questions rang forth from room 151 every day during the 7th hour when the Reflector Annual Staff met to pro- duce the 1953 yearbook. Under the able direction of Ioseph Zaccardelli, the staff Worked many long and extra hours to edit an annual that the students could be proud of. Under the Big Top was chosen as the theme early in the fall, and work was begun immediately to present life at Iackson High School as it was lived and enjoyed during the school year of 1952 and 1953. The in- clusion of underclassmen's pictures greatly increased interest in the Reflector, as did various other improvements made in the book. Left to right: I. Rogers, N. Yeakey, Doug Bisbee, D. GRCI-IESTRA Led by three majorettes and one drum major these energetic band members marched at all the home football games, at the U. of M. Besides these activities they participated in two concerts, one in lanuary and the other in May, which helped pay their expenses to lnterlochen for one week in August. l-lere they joined other schools for instruction and recreation. All of us at one time or another have seen the Varsity Marching Band of I. l-l. S. and we all agree that it is one of the finest high school bands. After school or at noon many of us have walked by room 155 and have heard differ- ent sections of the orchestra practicing for one of their numerous engagements. Be- sides participating in a concert with the band, playing for the all school plays, and Viking Assemblies, and the splendid chil- dren's concert for elementary school stu- dents, the orchestra takes part in many other school events. Iackson High School is certainly fortunate to have such a fine speech department. The dramatics division, under the professional direction of Maurice Fall, is one of the finest in the state. Evidence of this is seen through- out the year in the production of plays, Vik- ing Assemblies, puppet shows, and the other events staged through the efforts of the dra' matics group. The first semester play, Our Miss Brooks, was a great success, as two casts played to appreciative audiences. During the second Back row il. to r.J: R. Turn- er, I. Williams, R. Smith, I. Boos, B. Working in cooperation with Student Gov- ernment the dramatics department also has a big hand in making the Viking Assemblies the grand productions they always are. The student body of Iackson High School and the entire community of Iackson should be proud and grateful for the fine entertain- ment put on by the dramatic classes of Iack- son High School. N -I' ' Without the stage craft classes, the plays, Viking Assemblies, Magazine Assemblies, would be very dull presentations. The fabu- lous settings made by this group, under the supervision of Mr. Fall, compliment the fine acting of the Viking players. Many hours of class time and after school work are devoted to painting flaps, stage furniture, and propsg figuring out exotic light- ing effectsp searching for propertiesg and keeping the stage in tip-top condition. Much of this popularity can be attributed to the successful season record compiled by the 1952 squad. This squad, headed by Iurgen Dielcmann, the exchange student from Germany, who also went on to be runner-up in the State Class A Singles Tournament, was made up of Tom Iames, No. 25 Duane Arnold, No. 37 Fred Sill, No. 4, and Dave Pemberton, No. 5. Paired as the doubles teams were Andy Hall and Bill lohnson, No. 1, and Dave Stauff and Lionel Wilson, No. 2. Coach Dennis Kiley's 1952 tennis team was one of which Jackson High can be proud. Led by co-captains Buzzy Newton and Bob Kiple, the Vikings edged out Hillsdale in the eighth inning 5 to 4. Playing all the neighboring 5A schools, the team Won only one game, but they did not lack spirit or courage. One of the most excit- ing games of the season was played against Ypsilanti, which the Vikings lost in the sixth inning. Don Mick, Rex Youse, and Malcolm Mohr led the pitchers, While Wayne Kimmel was the leading batter. Last year's team may not have made a very impressive record, but through their mistakes they have gained experience which they will benefit by next year. The reserve team did not play competitive baseball during the season. lnstead they played teams among their own squad to help develop players for the next season and the varsity team.
