In the state forensic league the debaters rolled up three double and a split decision which automatically qualified them for the state elimination debates. Faring less well in the 5-A league laclcson won two debates and lost six: one of the victories however was over the defending state champion Lansing Sexton high. The Vikings concluded the debate season at the Ann Arbor elimination where they lost the district championship to Ann Arbor high by a two to one decision. There are four degrees of active membership - Green l-land , Chapter Farmer , State Farmer , and American Farmer . Advancement through these grades of membership is based on achieve- ment in vocational agriculture and progressive establishment in farming. However, during the last half minute of the game, Born of Kazoo coolly sank a long shot to win the game. Christmas Tournament Jackson .... Third Place f:.e Vikings won third place in the Flint invitational rasizetball tournament which closed on December 28. The Vikings came through the three games a record of two wins and one loss. ln the first game Jackson edged out Grand Rapids Central 30 to 25. Jackson was out in front all the '.-:ay and played a steady game in every quarter. I. Walters, Forward M. Raguse, Guard In the second game Jackson had their championship hopes smashed when they lost to Flint Northern 47 to 37. At the end of the first period Jackson led 9 to 5, but after that Flint got going and slowly caught up and passed the Vikings. Flint Central was their third foe and Jackson romped over them 56 to 33. This victory gave Jackson third place in the tournament. The Norsemen enjoyed a big lead all the way, leading 16 to 9 at the quarter and 33 to 14 at halftime. For the third time in as many games, Allen was top point maker with 14. Jackson showed a great deal of improve- ment as the tournament progressed and it is Coach Ogden's hope that they will play as well during the rest of the season. Friday, January 10---Lansing Sexton at Jackson Sexton .34 Jackson . . . . 48 ln the first Five-A League game, Jackson gave a surprised Sexton squad a 48 to 34 licking. This was the second win of the season for Jackson. High point man for Jackson was Allen who made 17 points. Following him was Poehler with 13 points to his credit. Friday, January 17 -- Lansing Eastern at Lansing Eastern 35 Jackson . . . . . 40 This amazing contest certainly caused the 5A league to sit up and take notice. By means of a 21 point last quarter spree, the Vikings plowed under a Quaker 5 which had been rated as tops in the league and high in the state. The score stood 27 to 21 in favor of Eastern soon after the start of the fourth quarter when Jackson broke loose for fourteen points in a row and a lead that the demoralized Lansing team 1-:as unable to overcome. A11en's 16 points was the evenings top scoring effort for Jackson. Tuesday, January 21 Battle Creek at Jackson Battle Creek 36 Jackson 51 The Vikings overwhelmed a visiting Battle Creek: team 51-35 for their fourth Consecutive win of the season. This, however, was but one of two victories. The other, less apparent, but equally important '.-:as the conquering of their 'third period jinx which they shattered by scoring over one fourth of the to'al points in that period. Mion, Guard Friday, fanuary 24 - Arm Arhor at lackson Ann Arbor 30 Iackson 46 The Vikings won their fourth straight game in the Five-A lout not until they had endured the most harrowing eighteen minutes of the season. Throughout two periods and two minutes of the third nothing went right for the Vikings, or rather, the Vikings did nothing right. The had chalked up fourteen fouls against themselves and Ann Arbor had forged ahead 22-l7. However, from there on, the Vikings tallied l8 points in a row during the third quarter and went on to win the game 46 to 30. Allen was high scorer with l5 points to his credit. However, during the third period lackson, making l5 consecutive points, leaped ahead to a llepoint lead making the score 30-19. ln the fourth period the Craftsmen were again cutplayed hy ll points and the final score was 47-25. Friday, February 7 - Sexton at Lansing Lansing Sexton 34 Iackson . 38 Bent on revenge the Big Beds of Sexton made a valiant effort to stop the Vikings' rampage but were again defeated. The game close throughout most of the first half, with the score tied several times, lout in the third and fourth quarters Iackson poured it on to out-distance the game Lansing team. Allen scored l5 points with Foehler and Captain Russel dropping in eight each. Friday, February l4 Eastern at lackson Lansing Eastern 34 Iackson 29 A well organized Quaker team paced by brilliant Lee Boucher and Bob Nagel handed the Vikings their first defeat of the Five-A league season and ended the Orange and Black winning streak. lt was not for lack of chances that lackson did not win, but for lack cf the usual precision and accuracy of the team. Thursday, March l3-- Del.aSalle at lackson Del.aSalle 20 Iaokson 40 Clinching a place in the state tournament the Vikings captured an easy Win from Detroit Del.aSalle, Coach Ogden used his regulars only a short period of the contest. The second, and part of the third teams, saw much actiony the regulars returning for the last few minutes of the game. The Orange and Black led throughout the four periods: quarter 9-2, half l8-8, third period 29-8, and final quarter 40-20, V. Allen, Guard E. Thursday, March 20 Arthur Hill at Lansing State Quarter-finals Class A Competition Arthur Hill 56 fackson 43 Iacksons drive to capture the quarter-finals playing the fast and speedy squad, from Arthur Hill, lacked the punch to win. Four of the regulars rust returning to the squad, after an attack of the flu, could FlCt muster enough speed to help the team click. Earlier in the season, before illness weakened the Viking's lightning attack, the Orange and Black handed Arthur Hill a 44-38 defeat, ALL STATE BASKETBALL HONORS Vernon Allen, the Vikings' shooting sensation, won a guard position on the All-Michigan basketball mythical learn. Fred Poehler and Elmer Russell received honorable mention by the rudges. For the first time, in the 5-A league history, the Viking basketeers captured undisputed first place. Other firsts were copped by Tittle, Taylor, and the relay team of Taylor, Baldwin, and McClellan. Tuesday, February 4-- Lansing Eastern at lackson Lansing Eastern 38 lackson 46 The Vikings, by capturing the final event of the match, won over the Lansing Eastern natators, Dick Taylor won the 100-yard back stroke race in 13098. Tittle took the 50, yard free style in 27.1, Andrews won the lOU-yard free style in 62.8. Aldrich captured the 150-yard individual medley in 11592. The final 200-yard relay, composed of Stevens, Pulling, Andrews, and McClellan, made the de ciding points for Iackson. Friday, February 7 e Saginaw Arthur Hill at Saginaw Arthur Hill 66 Iackson , 17 Handicapped by the extra length of the Saginaw YMCA pool the Vikings were overcome by the scrappy Arthur Hill swimmers. The 160- yard relay team of Andrews, McClellan, Pulling, and Tittle produced the only lackson first. Dick Haage, Saginaw's free styier, swam a record breaking 2:O7.5 in the 200- yard free style. Snyder in lacknife Dive Tuesday, February 18 -- Flint Central at lackson Flint Central 50 lackson 34 Due to illness of Pulling, Alban, and Taylor the Vikings swimmers were at a tremendous disadvantage in the meet '.-:ith Flint Central, Hinkley, displaying top notch perform- ance, captured his first first of the season in winning the diving event. Tittle came in first in the IUO-yard dashp and the relay team won a first place in that meet. These firsts, however, were not enough to turn the score for the Vikings. Five-A Meet t Saturday, February 22fat Battle Creek Battle Creek . . .90 Ann Arbor .31 Lansing Eastern 28 lackson 19 Battle Creek swept the 5-A meet by taking every first place except one. lack Tittle won the 50-yard free style and Dick Taylor took second in the 100-yard backstroke. The Vikings captured fourth placey its only other points were scored by the medley relay team, consisting of Taylor, Alcan, and Tittle, which tied for third place. Lansing Sexton did not place a team in competition. Tuesday, February 25 1 Kalamazoo at Kalamazoo Kalamazoo 34 lackson .. . 50 lackson High Schools swimming team took six of nine first places in defeating Kalamazoo for their last game of the season. The Vikings first were won by its two medley relay teams, Earl Carpenter in the 100-yard breast stroke: Bing McCle-Ilan in the 2OGfyard free style: Dick Taylor in the i9Oevard liack stroke: and Dick Alban in the 150-yard medley. Saturday, March I Y State Meet at Lansing Battle Creek 39 Arthur Hill 36 Grosse Pointe 27 ln spite of brilliant performances, none of coach Dutoher's swimmers were able to make the first division.
