asi i Calling Them Back My halls, stairways, and classrooms have been emp ty for the past three months or so. It's really been quiet, with only the occasional meeting, an administrator or teacher rattling around, and the maintenance crew working to give my creaky floors a shine and my old walls a facelift', so to speak. I suppose summer comes to give me a break from the battering I take during the school year, but that's why I am. Without the students I have no purpose, no reason for being, and when they're gone I feel so hollow. Sometimes I wonder if I'll make it through another summer vacation. I have for way over 50 years, so maybe I can hang in there a while longer. At last, summer is over. I can open my doors and windows again. All of them. I wonder what the new crop of seventh-graders will think of me? Will they soon feel comfortable and a part of me? I'm certain they will. I'll miss last year's Seniors. They were a fine bunch of kids, but they've outgrown me. It's time for them to move on. I'm looking forward to seeing this year's Seniors. Now, there's a really fine class. I've watched them grow from youngsters to young adults, but all Seniors have one thing in common. They think it's their year to ‘rule the school', and they try, they do try. Along with the familiar faces, there will probably be a sprinkling of new ones. I make space for all of them and I think I hear ALL of them coming through my doors, ready to begin a new year. Ah. I can breathe easily now. My halls, stairways, and classrooms are filling up and are beginning to team with life — the life the students bring — students intent upon “GETTING INTO THE ACT . And like old Will Shakespeare said, All the world's a stage, etc., etc. -r Let the parts of the students' play begin. Junior Tami Trace paints a spirit sign. Sr. Rhonda Chisholm
