Students were greeted by new faculty members, guidance counselors, and new administrators as they entered school late in August. Perhaps the biggest change was a new Superintendent of the Jackson City Schools Dr. Michael Richardson. Plans also developed for a new JHS I The Jackson County Home on Route 93 South was purchased by the school district and was designated as the location for the future grounds of a new high school building. 2 Makin’ Change Named Zheme Of ’85-86 2 Opening It was not unusual for students to be MAKIN' CHANGE for the new pop machines located in the lobby of the gymnasium. The profit made from these machines benefits the athletic department. Ironmen athletics were credited with a league change. The Jackson Ironmen, Galipolis Blue Devils, Logan Chieftains, and Athens Bulldogs welcomed in the Marietta Tigers into SEOAL play. This book has recorded the changes and the continuing traditions of JHS in the school year 1985-86. Read on to find out ... Opening ? Apple Festival: An Unchanging Community Tradition Some things never change. Oh, some minor variations, maybe, but never anything overwhelming. One of these Jackson things”is the annual Apple Festival. During the third week of September, the merchants and townspeople give up the downtown streets and sidewalks to merrymakers who transform the town into the annual celebration of the fall harvest of apples. At that time, apples are king. The week was filled with late nights and entertaining activities in the downtown” area. Jackson countians were reved up and ready for everything. 6 Apple Festival Around town, JHS students emptied their pockets for fun, cotton candy, elephant ears, french fries, and candy apples. You saw others riding rides, playing games, and just walking, talking and observing the scenery. The Senior Booth (under direction of Mr. Jim Reynolds) attracted attention, as many flocked to see what decorations the Seniors had thought of and displayed in their traditional money-making booth. They were original, as usual. Apple Festival 7 Students Enjoy Days Of Apple Fun wm—mmm Apple Legends was the theme, inspiring creativity and originality in window displays, booths, and float entries. As for acting royalty, the Queen of this year's festival was Senior Tammy Hill and one of her princesses was JHS Senior Lisa Huston. The other attendant Becky McManoway was not from JHS. These young ladies reigned over the festival with poise and grace. Apple Festival 9 Ironmen Rally, Cheer To Defeat Rival Rockets Crowds gathered with the Ironmen at th ir annual bonfire and pep rally held the ni ht before the big game played against the traditional rivalry, the Well-ston Rockets. Players and Coaches rallied with great expectations of the events that were to happen in the game and were backed fully by their fans. The Iron-men went on to defeat the Rockets the following evening. A group of Ironmen supporters consisting of fans, band members, and cheerleaders displayed spirit for an Ironmen victory. 10 konment Spirit Jackson — 34 Wellston — 0 Cheerleaders Chant ... First year JHS coach Dennis Hutchison, was pleased with the potential of his athletes. He feels the future outlook appears promising for the Big Red. The team went 3-7 on the season. Mainly they were plagued with injuries and a lack of Senior leadership as there were only eight Seniors on the team. The Reserve squad finished out the season with a 1-7 record under the leadership of first year coach Steve Gut. 18 Varsity Football Row 1: R. Viers, M. Hammond, A. Harper, B. Moore, S. Brunton, M. M Fans watching the Ironmen Cheerleaders might have noticed some differences this year. This was the first year that an eight member squad had been selected. In previous years only six members were selected. Fans might also have noticed that the cheerleaders did not do any pyramids at games This stemmed from a recommendation from the Ohio High School Athletic Association which was adopted by the SEOAL for safety reasons. A new head cheerleader advisor led the squad with two new assistants to the cheerleading program. Mrs. Sherry Headley was assisted by Mrs. Pam Evans and Mrs. Nina Rose, all of the JHS faculty. One thing didn't change though; the enthusiasm and support they used to cheer on the Ironmen through the seasons of athletic competition. 22 Varsity Cheerleaders JV Cheerleaders Show Enthusiasm In Support Of Teams 0€ERlEADf S Cheerieoc ng a lots of hard wofk. This definition can be summed up in two words: Iron-man Fan. One fan of the Ironmen in particular was known to bring the crowd members to their feet many times. It wasn't unusual to hear the Ironmen fans chanting Ted ... Ted ... Ted ... They were referring to student Ted Sweeney. It was never known at what time he was going to appear, what inspiring speech he had to give, or even what he was going to wear for the boosting of the Ironmen SPIRIT. He couldn't have done it, however, without the help of the cheerleaders, band members, and of course the FANS themselves. Many loyal Ironmen Fans sat through discouraging losses, rain, snow, and bitter coldness to help support the teams. These people helped to continue one unchanging tradition of Jack-son High School! Many changes are faced by Incoming seventh graders Some find that changing classes seven times a day proves difficult, while others just can't get over the mysterious workings of stubborn locks and lockers Many ask questions such as, Where’s the library? . and to these JHS newcomers, they seem perfectly reasonable and deserving of a serious answer. The looks of amazement that play on their faces when someone deliberately misdirects them are priceless to upperclassmen who have traveled this road before. Seventh graders definitely have a time of it. In addition to all the homework assignments, new teachers, stubborn lockers, chaotic lunches, and maddening hallways, these 'kids' have to tolerate being the pawn of shoving contests between classes and being the object of practical jokes by upperclassmen These are just some of the changes seventh graders are forced to go through each year, but hang in there! Remember, if you make it through these annual trials, the next five years will be much easier! They are famiSar with the physical layout of the building and are confident enough to lend a helping hand to seventh graders.j Eighth graders are eager rather than apprehensive. Now fully adapted to high school life, sophomores are at ease in both academics and extracurricular activities Minor changes in and around JHS are dealt with and handled. Sophomores are able to cope. This time, with only two more years of high school ahead, sophomores are beginning to think of choices for the future and finalizing decisions about causes and activites for their junior and senior years. A large number of them are facing a change in degree of responsibility — the change that comes with being able to drive a car. This is an exciting prospect, one that changes both home life and school life. Make no mistake, sophomores like being labeled as such. The term itself denotes the stature they've acquired after the three years of seventh, eighth, and ninth grades — and it's one they would prefer not to change! 1 Phillip Adkins Christy Aldrich Michoel Alford Aaron Allen Lisa Allen Raye Angel Kendra Bailey' Towana Baker Jesse Baldwin Kris Ball Rodney Barker Julie Bertram Stacey Bartram David Blevins Lisa Boggs Stacie Boroff Cheryl Bowling Dan Bowling J.J. For juniors, the changes that are faced represent more a state of mind than actual physical changes in people, classes, and teachers. With one more year to go before reaching the “top of the ladder,” they are real JHS veterans Comfortable with every aspect of school, juniors look forward to Senior Assembly when the class key is passed down and they assume the responsibilities of holding the title of 'senior' and all that it includes. But, although Senior Assembly may probably be one of the most looked forward to events in the school year of a junior, some of the tasks that accompony the title may not be quite so enthusiastically welcomed. Term papers and government tests are just two of these All in all. the junior year in high school is one to be remembered In some ways, it is the close of something special, but in another, it is the beginning of a new chain of events that will present changes for many years to come. Am I in any candid shots? Oh! look at my hair! It looks terrible! I can't believe they put that in here! I'm sure these are some questions and statements that almost all of us have said at one time or another about the yearbook Just as we all go through it looking for pictures of ourselves and then of our friends. It's something we all do whether we mean to or not. Then comes the signing of our yearbooks. Everyone writes about something you've done in the past that you would like to forget about And then there ore the people who don't know you too well or just can't think of anything to write so they all write the same thing. Good luck in life and everything you do It’s just a filler when you can't think of anything original to say. It has good intentions but after seeing and writing it for so long it just becomes automatic and is written without feeling Face it, we ALL write it so we can't complain too much, right? But maybe we should all stop and rack our brains to come up with something original, even if we don't know the person too well After all. the yearbook may be the only thing we have to remind us of our good times at JHS. — June Vermilion 11007 State Rt. 35 North Jackson, Ohio 45640 4 286-2191 | ----- - CALLAHAN INSURANCE AGENCY INC. 216 Pearl St. Jackson, Oh. 286-1907 We Pay Cash For Ashes Good Luck Class of 86 TRUCKS BUICK SHEETS PONTIAC-OIDS-BUICK-GMC INC. Yet the changes throughout the past mne months are the stuff memories are made of There may be love-hate relationships with some of these memories, but a lot of them deserve a second look, anyway New foces were spotted — superintendent's, football coaches, basketball coaches — and a major overhaul of the auditorium (complete with assigned seats), and a stripping away of the landscaping that stood guard for so many years were just a few of the changes that sowed the seeds of interest m the halls With the right coins (and the permission of an understanding teacher), instant thirst relief was made possible by new Coke machines. Friends makin'changefor friends was a daily thing. New additions to the food strip were Rax, Bonanza. Allies' Galley, and a drive-thru Main Express — quick satisfaction for the hungry, thirsty, and moving. But all changes are not for the better. Feelings churned over the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster and the long-term effect on the space program is still being questioned. And who really knows what happened during the Chernoble nuclear meltdown? How bad was it? How far-reaching were the effects? These tragedies affected changed in both outlook and perspective. Music — ranging from country (Hank Williams. Jr.) to rock (Phil CoBins) to heavy metal (Van Halen) — fed the soul and fads in '85-'86 (stirrup pants, padded shoulders. Reebocs. paisley, and Miami Vice) came and went but everything will be remembered. It was a do your own thing kind of year with students showing their individuality and continually Makin' change. 206 Closing Year Closing Candids 207 I was at school late into the evening for play proctice I was walking down the hall to leave and thought I heard soft whispers; it was as if the building was talking, telling of the day's adventures, failures, and even accomplishments All over the floor there were papers. Some were notes, love letters, and threats Some were tests that, due to lack of study, were failed, other were lost homework, unsigned permission slips, and page after page of plain, blank, wasted paper On the walls were campagn signs. Rose for President. dnd Write-in Ted. reminders of the past week's class officer elections. I also noticed, along the walls, pen marks, where some vandalizing students had scribbled for fun. From out of lockers hung books, papers, and vdrious other objects Here and there were lockers with the doors hanging open, due to the fact that at least one of the hinges was broken or gone On some of the classroom doors were spirit signs, supporting various teams in the school and attempting to cheer them on to victory. In the front hall were trophy cases displaying awards for vorious sports and activities and showing more school spirit. When I got outside I looked up at the old building, which seemed to be resting, waiting for another busy day — tomorrow. I smiled and thought, after the students move on and graduate, the school still remembers. Although we are too busy to notice, the walls see everything and SOMEWHERE is a reminder of all it has ever seen — A Staff Member Osky Wow 1986 Jackson High School Tropic Vaughn Streets Printer: Josten's American Yearbook Co. 1312 Dickson Highway Clarksville, Tennessee 37040 Press run: 600 Price: $17.00 Trim Size: 9' X 12' Page Count: 208 Paper: 80 lb.
