Fans Support Varsity Squad “Two-a-days” in August were the beginning of a long, up-and-down season filled with hard work for the varsity football team. The Gridders started the season by winning two consecutive games, beating the Well-ston Golden Rockets and the Wheelersburg Pirates. Most Ironmen probably wouldn’t want to remember the third game. This loss to the Portsmouth Senators was the start of a five game losing streak. A collective sigh of relief followed the Gallipolis game as the Ironmen redeemed themselves by defeating the Blue Devils. A two and a half hour trip to Mansfield preceded another loss for the Ironmen. However, a quick recovery was on the agenda as the next week the team beat the Athens Bulldogs. Spirit and enthusiasm followed the team wherever they went, whether they won or lost. Fans supported the team by bonfires, wearing jerseys, waving red and white shakers, cowbells, and road signs.
