The J.H.S. parking lot and school grounds were rapidly filling with people. Some had never been there, others were old hands at this. Suddenly, buses pulled up adding more people to the clamoring crowd. Some were searching for old friends, others were telling about their vacation. As the crowd continued to swell, a bell rang and the group began to crowd into the building. No doubt about it, August 28th was the beginning of a new dimension — the first day of school. Pg. 4:1. Barbie Britton and Peggy Kidd check out the senior lockers. 2. Students board the bus after school. 3. The parking lot filled rapidly the first day of school. Pg. 5: 1. With a clean slate students begin to study everything from algebra to zoology. New classes mean different teachers, saving seats for friends, meeting new people, and finding room in your locker for yet another book. It also means endless hours of studying, taking tests, writing speeches and reports, doing class projects, and wondering if it will ever end. Almost everyone finds his favorite and least favorite class immediately. All these things add up to another dimension. Class Time Can Be Fun ( Opening ( |M nmn 7 Apple Festival As the days of September started to pass, a familiar feeling started to take over the town of Jackson. The students of J.H.S. knew it could only signal one thing. The Apple Festival was near. For the seniors it was time to plan and erect the senior booth. For others it was time to prepare for parades and competitions. Some strolled through the streets playing games, riding rides, and eating. Others worked in various booths or watched entertainment at the grandstand. All in all, it was a time for the citizens of Jackson to celebrate together another dimension in our year. Pg. 8: Wendy Crabtree helps out by working in one of the many booths. 2. Seniors James Voiles, Don Bolen, Paul Rupert, Jared Downey, Mike Keeton, John Griffiths, Stephanie Hunter, and Marsha Hall help at the Senior booth. While some are practicing football, track, tennis, volleyball, and cheerleading, others are attending band, chorus, Hi-Q and play rehearsals. No matter what the team, many long hours are spent perfecting the skill. Many times it means not going home until late, missing out on other school events, rushing to complete school assignments, or giving up Saturdays. But everyone who attends these practices agrees it is worth it. 10 Opening Opening 11 J.H.S. Has Spirit! A very important dimension in any school is spirit. The most obvious forms are playing sports, cheering for the athletic teams, wearing red and white, going to pep rallies, and singing the school fight song. However, spirit can be found with those who work in the booths at the ballgames, line the ballfield, take care of the athletic equipment, sell programs at the games, or work in the school offices. So, if you ever think there is no spirit, look beyond the obvious, you might be surprised at what you find. Pg. 12: 1. The varsity football team rips through the spirit banner at a pep rally. 2. J.H.S. students cheer for their team. 3. The Cheerleaders get even with the football players during the assembly. Pg. 13: The team cheers as football players Brad McCorkle and Rod Miller prepare to throw the stuffed tiger into the fire. 2. Several team members pose for our camera. 3. After hours fun begins. While some students opt for studying, most put the books away and start to play. The offerings for after school and weekends are endless. You could go to a sporting event, a dance, a movie, a concert, out to eat, skating, listen to your favorite groups latest sounds, watch videos, shop, make extra money, read a book, visit with friends, or just cruise the town. No matter how you spend your free time, you add a dimension to the year. Pg. 14: 1. The field crew clowns around during a break from preparing the field for a game. 2. You could hear the phrase echoed over and over. “Are they here yet?” By third period it had been confirmed; the 1984 yearbooks were here. Crowds poured into room 210 the next morning to claim their Osky Wows. After the owners leafed through their new treasures they began to point things out to friends and pass books around for signatures. As the excitement began to die down, it was realized this, too, was a dimension in their year. Yearbook distribution day is a long-awaited happening. Students line up outside 210 with receipts in hand, waiting impatiently to see “memories” from the year before. 1. John Lewis and Chris Rose pick up their yearbooks. 2. Fans Support Varsity Squad “Two-a-days” in August were the beginning of a long, up-and-down season filled with hard work for the varsity football team. The Gridders started the season by winning two consecutive games, beating the Well-ston Golden Rockets and the Wheelersburg Pirates. Most Ironmen probably wouldn’t want to remember the third game. This loss to the Portsmouth Senators was the start of a five game losing streak. A collective sigh of relief followed the Gallipolis game as the Ironmen redeemed themselves by defeating the Blue Devils. A two and a half hour trip to Mansfield preceded another loss for the Ironmen. However, a quick recovery was on the agenda as the next week the team beat the Athens Bulldogs. Spirit and enthusiasm followed the team wherever they went, whether they won or lost. Fans supported the team by bonfires, wearing jerseys, waving red and white shakers, cowbells, and road signs. There was about 1:40 left until halftime, when Brad Poe went up for a two-handed slam dunk which spelled lights out In the second gdme. the Ironmen faced the South Point Pointers, which turned out to be a contest of its own with Jackson winning — 65 to 53. Those two crucial points came from free throws by Mark Hammond. By this time, the Ironmen were beginning to know Route 93 rather well, as they were making their third trip down that road. Matches were won and matches were lost; but gaining experience was what was important to these future wrestling veterans. Jim Chilcote tackled the job of coaching this new team. Front A Carlisle. J. You answered our questions when we asked why And stopped the hurting for a short while. Together we’ve shared laughter and tears And our memories will linger throughout time. But, now you must face the world of fear And hopefully solve the riddles’ rhyme. In the fall several staff members were added to the already large staff as over 60 students applied for the 20 positions open. This year’s staff worked under faculty advisor Lucinda Eubanks. The staff schedule is filled with various activities and workshops where staffers were instructed in layout, design, copywriting, photography, and fundraising. These workshops were held at Denison University and OSU. Several staff members were inducted into the Quill and Scroll Honor Society for High School Journalists. The editor for the 1985 yearbook was Jennie Spriggs. Assistant Editor Robin Moyer and Business Manager Angie Addis were valuable workers. Staff work was not completed until July and many of the younger staff members became accomplished layout and design journalists. The darkroom at the school is a very important asset for school releases and instructional purposes. 1. Students look over pictures from S4 OSKY WOW on sale in 210. Journalists Keep Busy Any student or faculty member wanting to be informed about what’s going on at J.H.S.? — You can do so by picking up a monthly edition of the Skeleton; the school paper. This year the staff worked diligently to produce nine issues. Included in this were the Spring play program, Guys and Dolls (organized by staffer Lynn Wood), and two May issues, an eight page issue and a twelve page senior issue. An outstanding year of sales allowed this. Besides gathering information, writing articles, and meeting deadlines to add to their busy schedule, some staffers attended a J.A.O.S. workshop at Ohio State University where they were instructed in all aspects of high school journalism. In May, several members were inducted into Quill and Scroll; the National Honor Society for high school journalists. This year's staff was under the capable leadership of Editor Angie Addis and Advisor Lucinda Eubanks. Staff members Scott Spencer, Vivian Wood, Heather McGhee, and Robin Moyer were several of the staff writers who attended the JAOS workshop at OSU. Mrs. Lucinda Eubanks, advisor, is also a member of the Journalism Association of Ohio Schools (JAOS) Board of Directors for the state. Scott Spencer was a sports writer for the JHS publications. Fall Play 105 Guys And Dolls Premieres At JHS When the curtain opened April 19 and 20 for the JHS Spring Musical, GUYS AND DOLLS, the crowd was expecting a dynamite performance and they weren't to be disappointed. The long hours of practicing the dances, songs and lines brought this Broadway musical to our very own auditorium. The excitement begins when Nathan Detroit (Chris Rose) searches for a place for his legendary floating crap game while evading marriage to his fiance of fourteen years. Adelaide (Cindy Wiseman). Detroit then bets notorious gambler and womanizer. Sky Masterson (John Baesman) that even he cannot sweep the prim and proper mission lass. Miss Sarah (dual cast: Jenny Sheward and Cathy McCormick) off to Havana. As the plot unwinds, we find that both Detroit and Masterson have broken the first rule of gambling — they have fallen in love. Highlights of the play include a raid in the mission, a crap game in the sewer, and it teaches us all that If you see a guy reach for stars in the sky. you can bet that he's doing it for some doll. 106 Spring Play Jackson City Board Of Education Superintendent Dean Brown (V-Pre$.) New friends, classes, teachers and activities add together to build a very exciting year. It can also be a time for doubts. How do I open my locker? What floor am I on? Where is my next class? What is my locker combination? These doubts slowly vanish and by Christmas the youngest students at JHS are old pros. 116 Seventh Grade The seventh grade class officers for the 1985-86 school year were: Secretary: Melissa Rupert: President: Richard Molihan; Treasurer: Andrea Rippeth; and Vice-President: Jennifer Brunton (not pictured). Seats Sunday afternoon, May 5, thirty-five JHS students and several teachers, administrators, a board member, and parents gathered at Jolly Lanes for the JHS Bowling Benefit. This benefit will establish a fund for the replacement of the auditorium seats. Students, faculty members, board member, and administrators bowled three games. Prior to the bowling, all gathered pledges on the total pin count bowled by each individual. Those who participated enjoyed the afternoon — lots of laughter, mistakes, cheers, gutter balls, strikes, etc. Pins were totaled and pledges collected. The event raised approximately $1,000 to initiate a fund to replace the auditorium seats. Several prizes were donated and the following were winners: From Giovanni's — a 12 inch pizza for most sponsors — STEVE DELANEY From Gillespies — One large pizza for most money collected — STEVE DELANEY From McDonalds — Big Mac Coke for High Individual game - JAMES VOILES and MIKE ALFORD From Murphy's — Record album for Good Sport award — TRACEY ELDRIDGE.
