Varsity Cheerleaders — A Busy Year The summer of 1983 was a very busy one for the Varsity Cheerleaders. After school was out and tryouts were behind them, they began their summer practice sessions, working toward camp and competitions. Camp Crescendo at Rio Grande College, sponsored by the National Cheerleaders Association, was held in July. This was a very successful session for the squad, who received the Award of Excellence and was runner-up in that competition. which consisted of the five best squads at the clinic. They also received four blue (superior) ribbons at evening evaluations, the much sought-after spirit stick, and a blue ribbon for their performance of a lively choreography to “Beat It”. Stephanie Fenik received the “All American Cheerleader” award. The weeks following camp consisted of nightly practices for the Ohio State Fair Competition Their performance routine consisted of four minutes of cheers, chants, and choreography. During the respective sports seasons, the girls painted spirit signs, run-through signs, and locker signs; they baked treats for the players, and supported their teams in various other ways. Except for the lack of school spirit by the fans, the girls had a very rewarding and fun year. Row 1; Jeri Cox. Row 2: Renee Varcalle. Kelly Moore. Row 3: Peggy Kidd. Stephanie Fenik, Cheri Wolford.
