Who will their fellow classmates be and will they get to know each of them individually? — Will their dreams and goals set in 1979 ever become a reality in the new decade? A survey was taken by the Senior class concerning this. The results being yes” for the return of the draft, but no women should not be forced to sign up. But because 1980 was a beginning of a new decade, many people look at it as a new beginning or horizon, and a new start to do things right. Because it’s just starting. ---Lei's Qee How Things Are Turning Oui. . . Student Life 3 With a Little Thought. . . 4 Student Life We'll Make It Right. . . These assemblies were held for Junior and Senior high students along with the faculty members. They contained various student speakers and singers. Ministers and special singing bands were there to carry out the festivities also. Recognition is to be given to the students, guests, and teachers for all the work they put into the production of the glory-filled holiday assemblies. Students going home from the assemblies should have learned the meaning of why we celebrate these times and those involved did their best to do so. ___________________________________________J 16 Assemblies Below: The 7th grade chorus presents its musical abilities during the Carol Sing. After Game Dance: Football As the Jackson Ironmen Football team became more and more victorious, the after game dances became a bigger thing at JHS. It was a time to let your spirit show by dancing to the beat. The students are entertained by a D.J. who plays all the latest hits. Often a dance contest is held for anyone who wants to get in on the action, while the remaining crowd becomes the judge. Prizes are then awarded to the dance winners. Various groups sponsor these after game dances, which follow the home games; and they are attended by JHS students only. Dim All the Lights The lights were dim but spirits high as the Homecoming activities took place. The football game that normally precedes the dance was cancelled due to the Meigs teacher strike. In the auditorium decorated in black and silver, the queen and court were announced and escorted by their fathers to the stage. Student Council President Bruce Neal, and Senior Council member Kevin Barnett presented the Homecoming Queen Robin Moore her crown and roses. Queen Robin, Senior attendants Sharon Dearing and Sharon Ragland, Junior attendants Jami Cox and Marti Mallock, Sophomore attendant Kim Leach and Freshman attendant Sandy Langley danced the first dance of the evening with their fathers. D.J. Jack O’Shea from WKEE Radio station provided the music. The Student Council sponsors the dance annually. The queen and court are nominated and voted upon in grades 9-12. The lovely members of the court and their fathers await presentation of the Queen. L. to R . Homecoming 19 Mistletoe “Winter Wonderland was the theme for this year’s annual Mistletoe Ball, sponsored by The Skeleton. It was held on Dec. 15 from 8-11 p.m. in the auditorium which was decorated with various snowflakes and snowmen. As the mirror ball revolved above the floor, people danced to the music which was provided by our own J.H.S. DJ Scot Cook. As the night grew on, a surprise visitor from the North Pole arrived with a sack full of candy canes. In that familiar red suit, Santa Claus went around to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Far top: Lisa Phipps, Mary Bowling, and Eugenia Sharp take a break and listen to the music. Top: With a big smile on his face. Gene Waldron dances with his date, Marla Britt. People were dressed as farmers, hillbillies, women (when they were actually men), square dancers, and even toga party persons. As everyone danced to the music provided by Rick Bowman, Sheriff Rice arrested people either for too much public affection or not enough. While, across the auditorium, Mr. Issacs waited at the hitchin’ post to marry off couples. With the help of Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y, this yearly happening will always be remembered by many. The auditorium was decorated in Red and Pink, with gigantic valenties all over the walls. A giant heart flashed to the disco beat. Jack-O-Shea D.J.’d the dance. The turnout this year was above average and a better turnout is expected next year. The Sweetheart Court consisted of Queen Sharon Dearing, Freshman attendant Robin Meyers, Sophomore attendant Kim Leach, Junior attendant Daphne Underwood, and Senior attendant Sharon Ragland. Sweetheart 25 Healthy, Wealthy Dumb The Healthy, Wealthy and Dumb” by James Reach was selected as the fall play this year for J.H.S. The ten character play was presented on November 16 and 17 under the direction of Kent Washam, and was a huge success. The play appealed to every age bracket, young and old. Carl Eisanaugle portrayed the lead as Neil Whitmore, a college professor who’s a bit eccentric, but had a likeable personality. Roberta Phillips, who was also a college professor, but with no sense of humor was portrayed by Bonita Elkins. The play featured other strange and odd characters, among them — Brian Wallace as Dudley Kent, Jim Brown as Sam Anderson, Bryan Wood as Gramps, Angie Fouty as Jane Jackson, Valeria Watts as Kathy Ford, Brenda Pauley as Ronica Bragg, Greg Swann as Tony Lewis and Nancy Douthett as Susan Drake. It was titled Very Good, Eddie” with Robert Naugle playing the part of Eddie. The set is in a honeymoon resort in the Catskills during the early 1900's. Two pairs of newlyweds get separated and end up with each other’s spouse. Other lead roles were — Bonita Elkins as Elsie Darling, Carl Eisnaugle as Dick Rivers, and Lori Congrove as Elsie Lily. Director was Kent Washam assisted by Barbara Wilson. Student directors were Chuck Meadows, Angie Fouty, and Bryn Payne. Spring Ploy 27 High-Q: Outstanding Finish In December, Jackson H.S. was invited to participate in WOWK-TV's High-Q. A team of five members was selected on the basis of scholastic average and standardized test scores. Coaches and team members spent hours studying and preparing for these contests. The competition began in January. Jackson defeated five teams to capture the regional championship. June 12-14, J.H.S. team and coaches traveled to Louisville, Ky. to compete in the national competition with four other teams from various areas of the country. They were: 1. Bishop Watterson — Columbus, 2. Pleasure Ridge Park — Louisville, 3. Jackson High School — Jackson, 4. St. Paul, Minnesota, 5. Buffalo, N.Y. J.H.S. defeated the team from St. Paul, Minnesota to capture third place. Top right: 'Gee! I didn't expect this, was Ralph Wood's reaction upon receiving his plaque from the JCEA. Milo Rose (right) gave the Senior response thanking those involved and wishing the Jrs. luck. On April 25, 1980, members of the Jr. and Sr. Class of J.H.S. gathered together in the High School Cafeteria for the annual Jr. Sr. Banquet. Members of both classes are excused from school that day, with parents permission, to prepare for the evening. The annual happening began at 6:30 p.m. and is presented to the Sr. Class by the Jr. Class. Valeria Watts gave the invocation and dinner was served by the Jr. Mothers. Daphne Underwood gave the greeting, and Colleen Bentley followed with the dedication. Milo Rose then gave the response. Musical entertainment was provided by Zephyr and Lori Congrove sang the class song. As the program ended, students left with a few added memories and began to prepare for yet another important event — THE PROM Jr.-Sr. Banquet 29 Jr.-Sr. Prom The highpoint of the year — the Junior-Senior Prom sponsored by the Junior Class Members was held following the Banquet. The JHS auditorium was decorated for the formal dance in the Senior colors pink and burgundy and followed the theme “If You Remember Me which was the Senior Class Song. Co-chairpersons for the Prom were Mike Davis and Missy McCorkle, Junior Class Advisor was Mrs. Sandy Smith. The music for the event was provided by Spider Webb and the Pied Piper Super Disco Machine from Huntington. The dance was well-attended and the good times will be recalled in many memories. 30 Jr.-Sr. Prom A Night io Remember Jr.-Sr. Prom 31 Stay-at-Home 1980 Seasons in the Sun Immediately following the Jr. Sr. Prom, the annual Stay-at-Home party began. The music was provided by D. J. Jack O'Shea, and was sponsored by the parents of Juniors and Seniors. The theme for this year's dance was Seasons in the Sun and was decorated to coordinate with this theme. The building was divided into the four different seasons and decorated with various colors representing each of the different seasons. As the evening grew to an end, many students left the Jackson Memorial Building with many warm memories. A Message foAII Seniors On Sunday, May 18, at 7:30 p.m. the processional music began. With Lori Congrove as the accompanist, the Class of '80 soon filled the center section of the auditorium in blue and white caps and gowns. A sermon entitled “Meeting Yourself Halfway” was given by Rev. J. Robert Gray. After the benediction was given by Rev. Robert J. Johnson, the recessional music started and the Junior Marshals Daphne Underwood and Colleen Bentley directed the Seniors to end this year’s Baccalaureate services. After the invocation was given, a warm welcome was extended by Class President Milo Rose with the response by his mother, Mrs. Dave Rose. Preceding this, a quartet sang a few songs consisting of Hello, Mothers, Graduation Day, and the song written by Cereta Coll that became a tradition at the breakfast. A duet. Dawn Calloway and Sharon Dearing, sang If You Remember Me the Senior Class Song. After the closing remar s students left to prepare for that wild and crazy Senior Assembly. After preparing night after night for the last two weeks of school, the Senior Class of 1980 finally presented to the underclassmen of JHS .. . the 1980 Senior Assembly. During this assembly were various musical numbers presented by such stars as ‘‘The Pink Ladies and that famous rock-n-roll band “Tuesday’s Gone.” A special feature brought to us by national television was The Price Is Bite. From our own studio, the class members prepared the highlight of the Senior Assembly — the Senior Film, with a heartwarming slide presentation. We heard much gossip from the “High School Honeys and JHS's own gang of roving reporters for Week end Update”. Also on the agenda were such spectacular feats as Bad Barnett on his bike, who attempted an amazing jump of 14 vehicles (matchbox of course). The finale was a special treat as a live burlesque show consisting of members of our own Senior Class was presented. 36 Senior Assembly Senior Assembly Then, as the ending act finished, the entire Senior Class formed together as one and sang “If You Remember Me.” While the music played, many memories flashed before the minds of the members of the Class of 1980 and soon many tears followed. Drying these tears, the Almost Graduates prepared for the evening's commencement exercises. Senior Assembly 37 As the hands of the clock neared 7:30 p.m. on May 23, many different emotions filled the high school auditorium as the Class of 1980 prepared to become Jackson High School Graduates. The invocation was given by Rev. James C. Gleaves. Immediately following this, the Salutatory speech was presented by Susan Black followed by the six Valedictory speeches by Larry Ghearing, Ellen Greever, Steve Haynes, Allison Payne, Ralph Wood, and Tony Yerian. Directed by Mrs. Carolyn McCormick, the Senior chorus then sang their version of “The Rainbow Connection. Retired Supervisor Mr. D. Merrill Davis, honored the class with presenting the Commencement Address. Following this. High School Principal Robert Bevins recognized various students for their scholastic achievements. The time came to present diplomas to 206 graduating Seniors. Mr. John Finch, Superintendent of Jack-son City Schools for the past 16 years, presented the diplomas with the help of Assistant Superintendent John Worthington. This however, was the last time for Mr. Finch as he is retiring during the summer of 80 and Mr. Worthington will resume the new position. When the last diploma was received and Mr. Finch declared the Seniors official graduates, the tassels were changed from left to right signifying graduation. Soon afterwards, caps were thrown high into the air, tears of joy and sadness fell, hugs were given, and Keep in touch” and I’ll miss you” were heard throughout the auditorium. The times spent here at JHS will be times always remembered ... for the rest of our lives! Commencement 39 Classes: 1980-85 The 1980 Graduating Class of J.H.8. PAM ALBERT SHAWN BARR JULIE A. Fouty listens attentively. Volleyball This year's Girls Volleyball team has certainly done their share of putting the small school of Jackson High on the map of competitive teams. All their hard practices and the support and dedication which they showed for the team finally paid off, as the Iron-girls’ won their way up to the Regionals, but unfortunately, to face defeat. Junior Varsity did their share this year by also having their best team record ever here at Jackson. This year we had Tri-Captains. They were Sheryl Massay, Cathy Marck, and Angie Fouty. Sheryl Massay was named to the first squad of the SEOAL volleyball team while Cathy Marck was named to the second and Angie Fouty received honorable mention honors. The Ironmen were tied for first with Ironton as they went into the final game, but at the end of the game the score was Jackson 0 and Ironton 7. Although there were quite a few injured players throughout the season, the team still played strong. Head Coach, Terry Adsit, worked the team hard and they played a very strong offensive and defensive game and showed a lot of speed and’strength. This year’s Captains were Seniors Brian Landrum, Dobie Wyant, and Chuck Reisinger. These three players had great spirit and proved to be essential players. Before the season started, there were a lot of skepticals saying that Jackson would be lucky to win one game.
