Faculty Activities The Arts Seniors Advertisements Senioritis 176 Volume 67 Student Publication 1 4 6 S r-v Although beef is Jackson County’s chief agricultural product, the area is best known for apple production. Annually an average of 250,000 bushels of apples come from Jackson County. County Extension Agent, Ed Volburn, stated that most apple orchards in this area have been in families for several generations. According to Volburn, “Apples are a very creative type of business. I would compare an apple grower to an artist or a musician because of the skill involved in producing the apples.” Left 1 — Brad Walke and Ray Varcalle wait their turn in the Wed. afternoon parade. 2 — Jeff Ridgeway and Jeff Wasch sell at the Senior Booth. Because of the economic importance of apples in our county, the annual Apple Festival has become a tradition. This year the festival was held on the streets of Jackson during the week of Sept. 20-23. All Jackson City Schools were dismissed at noon on Wednesday and students were given reduced rates on all rides. Apple Butter was made on the city streets and Handicrafts by local artists were on display. 7 With the formation of the Jl Zoo and the Senior High Rowdies, initiated by faculty advisor Clarence Rice, JHS students have begun to take a greater interest in the support of athletic events. She struck out 132 hitters, walked 95, and only 117 hits were made while she pitched. Bedroll in hand, Cathy Marck boards the bus. Senior first baseman Beth Exline had a 928 fielding percentage and won the best defensive player award. During the games, the JHS dugout was never silent. The team had a way of making the batter feel excited. Kit Fleming and Michelle French find rest and comfort on the pole vault mat after a strenuous daily workout on the field. He takes running seriously: the reason behind sophomore Mike Leach's success as a strider. The girls' relay team consisting of Senior Michelle French, Junior Kit Fleming, Sophomore Diane Biggs and Freshman Brenda Reed ran practically non-stop for at least 90 minutes daily to prepare for the tournament. Athletic form flexed to its peak and his power gathered, Fouty goes into a 'spin' and prepares to set the discus free 54 In the above pole vaulting series of Don Yeager we see the form which gave him the new school record. He went to District Tournament by vaulting over the pole set at 12 foot 6 inches. In order to successfully throw the discus — balance, timing, and strength must be perfect. Cliff Fouty ended the season top-man on the track team with 148 points accumulated. He also was a strong hurdler for the competition. Front: Beth Exline, Kim Conley, Robin Reed (Tri-Captains). Hard work makes for a good play and many times the rewards are a heavy thirst and a lot of sweat. Sophomore player Mark Hammond doesn’t keep the bench warm during a game. Coach Yeager relays some information from upstairs. Looking for a first down, Brian Landrum pushes his way across the line. Buckeye Hills senior Walter Moon awaits orders from the coach. Jeff Music pays close attention off the field as well as on the field. Eager to begin the game, co-captains patiently listen to instructions from the official and wait for the toss of the coin. Diane K. Henry died on October 25,1978. Jackson High School as well as the English teaching profession felt her loss in many ways. A1967 graduate of Ohio State University, she was President of the Southeastern Ohio Council of Teachers of English at the time of her death. She was also a member of the Ohio Council of Teachers of English and Language Arts. Miss Henry, JHS teacher for 12 years, was also one of the primary contributors to the cultural and artistic aspects of JHS. She was one of the main instigators of the Arts Festival, an annual event which allows students as well as teachers to display their talents in art and writing. She helped to produce many plays on the JHS stage and for seven years she was advisor to the SKELETON and Quill and Scroll. Her extensive travelling through and knowledge of England and its history helped provide colorful and interesting backgrounds for her classes in English, Creative Writing, and Mythology. Miss Henry was a devoted family person as well as teacher and the contributions she made with her mind as well as her persona will always be deeply felt and appreciated by the people — past, present, and future 113 of JHS. Members of the Skeleton and Osky Wow staffs work continuously to keep students informed of interesting changes occurring in the system and the school throughout the school year. Staffers receive recognition and appreciation during the annual Quill and Scroll Honor Society induction. Those juniors and seniors who are in the top one-third of their class and who have contributed their services to the school through a publication are honored by being inducted into this Honorary Society. Students accepted in May were seniors Lisa Goldstayn, Angel Hartley, Lee Mutzig, Glenna Pauley, and honorary members, John Waugh and Suzy Williams. Assistant coeditors of the yearbook Angie Fouty and Tammy Ramey were inducted as full members. At the time of the induction, members were Tammy Carper, Chris Clark, honorary, Beth Exline, Lesley Michael, Susan Ridge, and Kathi Walke.
