The first class to graduate from Jackson High School was in the year 1876. This class consisted of a grand total of four members, all boys. The following year the total number of graduates increased to seven, all girls. The uniform of the day for J.H.S. students in the 1800's was as follows: the girls wore dark skirts (floor length), white shin waists (blouse), ruffled aprons, hair braded and tied with a large bow, and stiffly starched sunbonnets; the boys dressed in store-bought suits and boots. During the early years of high school in Jackson, the top floor of the old central school was known as the high room. This room served as the home of high school students. Central school was erected on Broadway and occupied the space now used as the Kinnison play ground. The Kinnison school was the first high school in Jackson and was known as Kinnison High School. It was the home of the high school student from 1912 through 1931. In 1931, the present Jackson High School became the site of secondary education and Kinnison became an elementary school. Over the years, the enrollment of J.H.S. has changed greatly from the original class of four. The largest class to graduate was in 1966 which numbered 265. Since 1966, the classes have exceeded a membership of 200 with the class of '76 numbering 221. The class of 1975 would have been the centennial graduating class from Jackson High except for one small detail. In the year 1882, J.H.S. changed from a three year high school to a four year high school; therefore, there was no graduating class that year. We salute the graduates of '76 as the centennial class of Jackson High School.
