JACKSON HIGH SCHOOL JACKSON, OHIO Salutes America's Bicentennial Our Centennial Class And The Sixty-Fourth Osky Wow The first class to graduate from Jackson High School was in the year 1876. This class consisted of a grand total of four members, all boys. The following year the total number of graduates increased to seven, all girls. The uniform of the day for J.H.S. students in the 1800's was as follows: the girls wore dark skirts (floor length), white shin waists (blouse), ruffled aprons, hair braded and tied with a large bow, and stiffly starched sunbonnets; the boys dressed in store-bought suits and boots. During the early years of high school in Jackson, the top floor of the old central school was known as the high room. This room served as the home of high school students. Central school was erected on Broadway and occupied the space now used as the Kinnison play ground. The Kinnison school was the first high school in Jackson and was known as Kinnison High School. It was the home of the high school student from 1912 through 1931. In 1931, the present Jackson High School became the site of secondary education and Kinnison became an elementary school. Over the years, the enrollment of J.H.S. has changed greatly from the original class of four. The largest class to graduate was in 1966 which numbered 265. Since 1966, the classes have exceeded a membership of 200 with the class of '76 numbering 221. The class of 1975 would have been the centennial graduating class from Jackson High except for one small detail. In the year 1882, J.H.S. changed from a three year high school to a four year high school; therefore, there was no graduating class that year. We salute the graduates of '76 as the centennial class of Jackson High School. This picture of a snow-covered pine tree first appeared in the 1974 Osky Wow when the staff decided to use it in the ad section. This tree was also used in the ad section of the 1975 Osky Wow. In 1976, the staff has decided that this sndw-fe :ree should become a tradition since it is able to express how many people may feel as the time for gradridtl baches. As fall arrives, the old Seniors drift away And the new Seniors take their place As the cycle continues. if When winter comes we find ourselves involved And as covered with work As our tree is with snow. In the spring, our tree begins to As our seniors look away L Toward new horizons. the summer, our little tree has reached its peak And so have our seniors Because soon they must start over again. Yerian 67 68 70 Music Instrumental Music During the 1916-17 school year, school orchestra was organized at JHS, consisting mainly of string instruments. In the 1928-29 year, a school band was formed consisting of brass and the ’’works.” This band included students from grades 6 through H. S. During the 1933-34 school year, the marching band made its first appearance at football games. They were ’’decked out” in new red and white uniforms for the event. Since that date, the Marching Ironmen, as they have come to be known, have kept the tradition alive. The concert band consists of the same members as the marching band. The most recent innovation was the origin of a stage band” which was formed during the 1971-72 school year. JHS Band The 1975-76 yearproved to be a most exciting and memorable one for the JHS Marching Band. The Year of the Band” started off as have past years, with summer band practice beginning the 1st week of August. To begin the active year, the band traveled to Nelsonville to take pan in the Parade of the Hills. River Days, an annual festival in Portsmouth, was the first band competition of the year. NHS brought home four trophies from this competition. Included were: 1st Place Class A A Band and Majorettes by the Senior Band, and a 2nd Place Class A Majorettes and 1st Place Band by the Cadet Band. This marks the seventh year for JHS panicipation in this event. The next event was a local event known as the Jackson County Apple Festival at which the band made its annual appearance in the three parades. The next competition participated in by the band was the Marshall U. Marching Band Contest at Marshall University in Huntington, W. Va. The band received a Superior Rating at the Competition. JHS had the honor of being the first Ohio Band to participate in the Southeastern Band Festival at Bristol Va.-Tenn. This well-known competition was held Oct. 3-5, with the parade and field competition on the 4th. Jackson received a Division II rating as a Band, and a 2nd Place trophy in Specialty Corps. The first Eisteddfod held in Jackson was prior to 1922. In 1922, the Southern Ohio Eisteddfod association was formed and the event became an annual festival. From 1922 until 1928, the Eisteddfod was held in the old Rink. In 1928, a new building was constructed specifically for the purpose of housing the Eisteddfod Competition. The annual festival was discontinued in 1938, and the building sold. This building was used for many purposes including a warehouse, it was destroyed by fire in 1973. In 1939, the Eisteddfod became a part of the school activity program and has been a continuous event since that date. Ribbons are presented for superior and excellent ratings. 78 79 80 Sports Athletic teams, particularly Football, Basketball, Baseball and Track have been a part of the activities of JHS since the turn of the century. Records of early teams are, however, too incomplete to use for the individual sports. The records sited herein will be those since the conception of the S.E.O.A.L. in 1925, at which time Jackson became a member. We are uncertain as to when team nicknames were instituted but the JHS athletic teams of the 1936-37 school were known as the Red Devils or Reds. Prior to this date the teams were known as the Welshmen or Fighting Welshmen as our fight song was originally written. The beginning date for this name is unknown. During the 1939-40 school year the name Ironmen was applied and Ironmen they have been since that date. At the above date the fight song was also changed to fit the new nickname. Apparently no change was made in the song during the brief period of the Red Devils. Prior to 1911, Jackson was a part of the Southeastern District of the Ohio High School Athletic Association. This division included Athens, Pomeroy, Wellston, Ironton, (later a part of S.E.O.A.L.), Chillicothe, Washington C.H., Greenfield, Portsmouth, Blanchaster and Kingston. During the early 1900’s, it was the custom for Jackson and Wellston to play 2 football games each year. One game was played near the beginning of the season, the other was played on Thanksgiving (the annual Turkey Day game with WHS was discontinued in the mid 1950’s). In 1908, the first game of the season was played, but the Thanksgiving game was canceled by Jackson. The Wellston newspapers accused Jackson of being chicken in canceling the game. The Jackson papers related the fact that since Wellston refused to play the game under O.H.S. A.A. rules they had canceled and furthermore had they known the first game was not played under the rules, it would also have been canceled. (Times don’t change much). Varsity Cheerleaders Etta Brackenbury, Margie Burger, Noreena Maynard, Cindy Conroy, Teresa McDonald, Jane Gentil. It is without regret that we cannot report a definite date for the organization of cheerleaders at J.H.S. They seem to have been a part of our school's history as far back as the beginning of athletics. (See athletic section.) JHS did not participate in league competition from the 1928-29 season to the 1931-32 season, otherwise our school has competed continuously. The reason for non-participation was due to the lack of facilities for basketball. The home of the basketball team was a building known as the Rink which was used prior to the above season. Jackson has a total of 263 wins in SEOAL Competition which places us near the bottom of the list. We have won only 2 league titles, these coming in the 1961-62 and 1962-63 seasons. The league is composed of 7th grade students and 8th grade students who do not qualify for the regular Jr. Hi team. Students who attend the 7th and 8th grades at Lick and Jackson Elementary also participate. The purpose of the league is to serve as a training ground for the younger students, and also to allow more boys to play basketball. The league is divided into five or more teams. The teams play each other twice during the season, and a tournament is held at the end of the season. The only slight exception was in the 1932-33 school year when a senior edition of the book was published, due to the economic conditions of our city and the world. The name Osky Wow is derived from an old cheer which follows: Osky Wow-Wow-Wow! Whisky Whee-Whee-Wheel Holy Mackie - I Jackson High!! The first female Editor-in-Chief of the publication was in 1937. The history of education in Jackson dates back as early as 1820. In that year and in ensuing years, private schools appeared on the scene in our community. Then, schools were usually located in a private home or in the upstairs of a local store, and they bore the name of their instructor. Sometime prior to 1842, a school constructed of log poles (no doubt smaller in diameter than conventional logs used for construction) was in operation. It was located on Pearl St., near the old Welsh Church. It is not known whether this was used as a public school or a private school. This information is from reminiscences of P. P. Price one time resident of Jackson, who attended said school. In 1847, our first public school (according to existing records) was erected, and during that same year was opened for business. It was of brick construction, located on Bridge St. Mr. J. W. Longbon (who was a pan of school history for many years), was employed as the teacher, at a salary of $26 per month, and Miss Nancy Delay was employed as his assistant at a salary of $6 per month. The school term was approximately six months in duration. The authorization for the construction of Old Central was given in 1856, and in Jan. 1857, it was used for the first time. The approximate cost of the building was $7,000 of which the city (then village) gave $365. The building was located on Broadway (now the site of Kinnison playground). Central was originally known as the Union School (exact date of name change not known). It was also originally used as a grade school only (use as a high school previously mentioned). An addition was made to the original building in 1872 (the extent of this addition is not known). In 1859 a candidate for School Board attacked the incumbent members for extravagant use of the public's money in payment of high school's salaries. The superintendent of school's was paid $275 for the school's term (approximately 6 months). The teachers of the lower 4 grades were paid $24 per month and teachers of the upper grades $24.33 per month. The citizens of Jackson did not agree with the gentlemen’s argument of high school salaries as he was soundly defeated. The First Osky Wow Staff 140 In 1866, a Classical and English School (Private H.S.) was conducted in Jackson by C. S. Smart (Supt. of Schools). The cost of each term (exact length not known) was $3-$10 depending on branches studies. The following article appeared in one of our local newspapers in 1885: The use of a drum has been discontinued in the Public Schools in Jackson. It was found that the students enter and leave the building just as orderly without its use as with it. The following is a list of high school subjects required by a student of Jackson in 1886: Latin - 3 years, geometry, physics, algebra, general history, botany, literature, physiology, physical geography, rhetoric and arithmetic. During the decade of the 1960’s, and extending into the decade of the 1970's the story of our country has been filled with the topic of integration of the public schools. It is interesting and appealing to note that the Jackson Schools were integrated in 1887. In 1912, the Jackson Schools found themselves in financial difficulty, an unusual event for any small school district. The grade school would be in mid-April and the H.S. would remain in session throughout the rest of the term (near the end of May). Mr. Morris L. Steinberger made a financial contribution to the Supt. of Schools, which enabled the grade schools pupils to continue through the term. As previously mentioned in our historical sketch, Kinnison was first used in 1912 as a high school. It has come to our attention since the printing of page 2, that Kinnison was not in complete use until 1921. We feel this information is necessary to complete the Kinnison Story (courtesy of Mr. Robert Ervin). The final item of our school history is indeed a fitting one, the new addition to our present high school. This addition was authorized in 1956. The move into the addition was begun in the fall of 1957 and in Jan. 1958, the addition was in full time use. The First Osky Wow 141 Old Central - Jackson's first High School. Mr. Finch and friend holding The Fish. The fish was a weathervane which topped the bell tower of Old Central. It was depended upon by the citizens for many decades as a weather indicator and caused the building to be nicknamed the fish building. 142 FIFTIETH ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT OF THE Kinnlson High School Crescent Opera House JACKSON. The convocation every Wednesday morning for opening exercises is a new and important term added to the H. S. this year. One of the Faculty reads a chapter from the Bible and the Lords prayer is repeated in concert by the pupils. Then usually follows a ten minute talk from one of the teachers. Occasionally there is singing and a piano selection to which the pupils march to their respective classes. Reprinted from 1913 O. W. There has been some disapproval expressed at the retention of the name ”Osky Wow” for the years edition. The chief objection being that the name possesses no intrinsic meaning and that one having a concrete or at least a suggestive significance be adopted. The writers (editors) opinion is that outside of its value as a part of the school yell, its novelty (a point to be considered in the naming of such a paper) should recommend its use, for the oddity overbalances its obstractness so that on the whole the name is highly suitable. Hence, let it continue to be the ”Osky Wow” into the future. Reprint 1917 Osky Wow It was only after the most careful consideration upon the part of the editors that it was finally decided to increase the price of the Osky Wow from 50 to 750. 143 Kinnison the second High School (Now used as an elementary school) Our present High School (Which has been in use for approximately fifty years.) 144 145 146 Activities at J.H.S. 147 The Arts Festival was begun at J.H.S. in 1972-73 school year and is now in its fourth consecutive year. The group then added additional honors at the Ohio Theater Alliance State Play Festival held at Ohio Wesleyan University. Best Play awards are not given in State competition; however, Randy Scott once again received the Best Actor award for his portrayal of Mr. Chambers, Jean Henry received a plaque for the Best Supporting Actress for her role as Mrs. Fisher, and Tammy Carper was awarded the All Star Cast Award for her role as Mrs. Sharp. PLAYS The first high school play was presented on De. 17, 1917. It was entitled The Elopement of Ellen and was staged at the Crescent Opera House also known as the Crescent Skating Rink or the Rink. It was necessary that the plays be staged at these locations because there was no auditorium at KHS. Between 1917 and 1924, all plays were sponsored by Kinnison High School or the Kinnison Dramatic Club. It appears that all interested high school students were eligible to participate. The first Senior Class Play was presented on April 14, 1924. It was entitled A Taylor-Made Man, and was staged at the Grand Opera House. All plays were staged here until the high school occupied its present home which had an auditorium. The custom of having a Fall play and a Spring Musical was begun at JHS in 1962. The purpose is to allow students with various talents to participate in the drama program. Currently members of the Frosh, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes are eligible to participate in the productions.
