The advisor of this club is Mr. Bevins and it is made up of juniors and Seniors who are planning a career in the field of teaching. The basic idea of this club is to offer potential teachers appropriate experiences designed to help them develop readiness for college and teacher education. Also to help the community achieve and maintain a balanced supply of qualified and competent teachers. The qualifications for this club are simple. You have to be at least a Junior and be interested in teaching. The club is open to both boys and girls. There is no minimum membership requirements for the club. The National FTA colors are black, white, and flame red. The red flame stands for high ideals and leadership. The black and white are used because these are the traditional colors used for the caps and gowns of those graduating from colleges and universities. The encouragement to hold high ideals and to study in institutions of higher learning constitutes much that is basic in the founding of the Future Teachers Club. One of the most helpful activities of the club is the supplying of substitute teachers. If a teacher cannot report to school for some reason and a qualified substitute is not available, an FTA member will preside over the class until a substitute is found. All in all the FTA is a worthwhile and rewarding club to belong to. It is one of the most popular clubs at Jackson High School. Row 1: Susan Willis, Debbie Clarke, Sally Howard, lane Dixon. A recapitulation sounded by the Ironmen Band on their return from Portsmouth, Ohio. This year proved to be one of the most productive of all years for the I.H.S. Marching Band. The enthusiastic members began practicing in the heat of August in preparation for the marching season. It should be noted that regardless of the weather or long hours of drill the Marching Ironmen never complain. The attitude is to rehearse until it is right. The first trip of the year was to Nel-sonville for the Parade of the Hills. This Parade is somewhat of a practice session before The River Days Parade in Portsmouth. River Days is strictly competitive. Long hours of practice and determination paid off again. The spirited band won the coveted Best Band Trophy for the second year consecutively. The first Band to be so honored. The I.H.S. Majorettes captured a first-runner-up trophy for the third straight year. Twenty three bands from three states competed in this parade competition. A side line venture to Seaman, Ohio proved fruitful with a third place trophy win. And last but not least, three Apple Festival Parades. Locally, the bands appear at the Christmas and Memorial Day parades. Final score, 50-14. After a slug-ish first half, the Ironmen got in gear and finished the night with a net of 260 yards rushing and 139 passing. This was our twelfth straight game without a loss. In a must win game, the Ironmen got back on the winning trail by coming from behind in the third quarter to defeat Meigs, 12-8. Valentine scored on a 69 yard run and Dan Murphy went over from the two yard line for the winning touchdown. Steve Meadows ran very well and Mike Roe, Roger Scites and Jeff Duncan were standouts with their defensive line play. lackson suffered an apparent letdown after the big win over the Marauders, as the Logan Chieftains shut out the Ironmen, 28-0, in the fifth game of the season. In a high scoring battle, the Golden Rockets of Wellston went down in defeat, 42-28, as Dan Murphy roared for five touchdowns. Sharp offensive play and an aggressive defense produced the fourth win of the season for the Ironmen. The lead see-sawed back and forth several times in a close, hardfought, well-played game before the Ironton Tigers finally edged Jackson in a heartbreaking loss, 20-18. The Ironmen fought valiantly against the bigger, stronger visitors from the River, but to no avail, as we finished with a total of 124 yards passing and 172 yards rushing, compared to Ironton's 58 yards passing and 208 rushing. The Undefeated Gallipolis Blue Devils handed the Ironmen their fourth loss, 8-6, in a close, exciting game played on a muddy field. Jackson led at the half, 6-0, but in spite of an excellent defensive effort, the Blue Devils controlled the football 18 straight plays to score the winning touchdown in the last quarter. The Jackson eleven defeated the Waverly Tigers, 15-14, for the first time since 1965. Fumbles prevented several scoring opportunities for the Ironmen. The Tigers played one their best games of the year, and as a result, the Big Red Machine” had to come from behind in the final minutes to win. Murphy bulled over on a fourth down play and Valentine converted for the victory points. Portsmouth West, ranked eighth in the state, downed Jackson, 30-14, in the season's finale to even our record at 5-5. The Ironmen went ahead early in the game, but failed to contain Wests' fine offensive backs. Again, mistakes were the difference in the game, as Postsmouth went ahead to stay in the second half. The 1970-71 lackson High School Basketball Team finished a brilliant season with an outstanding record of 14 wins and only 6 losses. This record represents the 3rd best in the history of J.H.S. The Ironmen put together a sharp shooting offensive and a tenacious aggressive defensive attack to defeat Oak Hill, and Meigs twice, Gallipolis twice, Logan twice, Ironton twice, Wellston twice, Vinton County, Portsmouth East, and Lancaster. The only teams to defeat the Ironmen were the League champions Waverly Tigers, the always-tough Athens Bulldogs, Greenfield-McClain High School, and the fired-up Chillicothe Cavaliers. Statistics showed that the Ironmen broke many school records this past season. A few of the records broken were foul shooting and field goal percentage, total points scored, total rebounds, defensive average per game, and several more. Coached by Dave Fisher in his 12th year as head coach, this year's team was led by six seniors. From these six, five seniors usually came the starting lineup who seemed to work together like a Big Red Machine.
