The Class of '70 chose as their song A Time for Us. The daisy was chosen as the class flower and, of course, green and yellow were selected as the very appropriate class colors. This class also brought something new into J.H.S. They were the class to design their own class ring — a design to be used by the next five classes. It sets Jackson High School apart from all other schools. Last of all, the class of '70 brought Moon Juice to the space age at the Senior Booth during the 1969 Apple Festival. The Class of '70 must say farewell to J.H.S. this year, but they will add, It was good to have been here. This was the resounding chant shouted by the Jackson Ironmen Band following their first place award at the annual River Days Parade held in Portsmouth. Also, the Majorettes captured a first runner-up trophy in this highly competitive parade. Tears and a great sense of pride flowed from the Best Band on this occasion. The sweat and hours of drill had finally paid off. As always the Jackson Band played from memory during all parades and half-time shows. Mr. Crawford believes that performances should be a mental, as well as a physical challenge. Maneuvers for the half-time shows this year seemed 76 M. McCartney, M. Collins, L. Schmid, M. Williams, T. The band entertained at all football games; the River Days Parade; Parade of the Hills; Ashland, Kentucky Parade; three times in the Apple Festival Parade; and the Christmas Parade. The band provides music for the National Honor Society inductions; Local churces; Commencement; the annual Musical; and many other services. The tangible and entangible rewards of participation in the instrumental music program will have a lasting effect on the lives of all the students so inclined. 77 79 Cadet Band We're only number 2 . . . but we try just as hard. The Cadet Band began rehearsals in August in preparation for appearances at all home football games. The band performed the pre-game and half-time shows for the Reserve Jackson football games helping us to victory. The Apple Festival keeps the Cadet Band on it's toes with participation in three parades. Marching season ended with the arrival of Santa Claus in the annual Christmas Parade. Concert season began when sixteen members of the band traveled to Athens to participate in State Solo and Ensemble Competition. The school year ended with the annual Winter and Spring Concerts. A Future Homemakers of America Future Homemakers of America is the national organization of girls and boys studying homemaking in high schools of the United States and Territories. As an integral part of the homemaking program, FHA provides opportunities for students to have additional experiences in planning and carrying out activities related to homemaking. Each year, members of local chapters develop a program of work, including projects and experience which will help them work toward the purposes. The local program of work is based on personal, family, and community needs. Any student, who is taking or has taken a homemaking course, may become a member. Sitting: Gerte Driessen, J. Parks, A. National Honor Society 104 Throughout history, man has recognized and marked for special honor those who excel. Ancient and medieval universities established their honor societies. In modern times, the coveted honor of election to Phi Beta Kappa outranks all other distinctions that a college can bestow. In election to the National Honor Society, the secondary school faculty honors the attainments already made and recognizes the promise they contain of continued excellence in the cherished ideals of a school. The object of all chapters shall be to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in the students of the secondary schools of the nation. The Junior Class has been very active during the 69-70 school year. At Christmas time they sold holly through out the area. The money from these sales went toward decorations for the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet which is set for April 24 this year. This is one of their hardest undertakings and also one of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences that falls on the shoulders of the Juniors. Strange voices, strange faces, chairs all affixed in proper places. The green, green halls so cold and drab, and little hermit rooms, are now our friends. The warm cocoons To which we now repair for learning and study, will soon Be turned to others for their care and keep. The Ivy covered walls, the student halls, and even teachers, all look different now, somehow. We well recall The seats assigned to us at first, how strange they seemed But then became a friendly place from which we viewed a multitude of thoughts and dreams. The people we have grown to love will soon disperse around the globe To be together just like this, no more. The friendly paths from place to place will soon be walked by other men who in their time, with quickened pace will feel as we do now. What glorious times these days have been, the turning leaves and autumn sun a framework of our cherished thoughts in distant days to come. Hail, Jackson, Hail, and yet again, oh may your tribe increase Sweet veritas, our veritas, may searching never cease. Ken Hultgren
