Varsity Cheerleaders 68-69 The Varsity Cheerleaders are a group of dedicated junior and senior girls who work hard all summer until April or May of the following year. Varsity and reserve cheerleaders are chosen in the spring of each year in order for them to organize and begin practices early in the summer. During the summer, they can attend camps where they receive professional help in cheering and can win ribbons and trophies. They also can begin summer projects to earn money, paint signs, collect ads, and, if necessary, get new uniforms. The purpose of the cheerleaders is to try and rally the enthusiasm of crowds and create spirit all over. Some of the jobs include collecting ads for football and basketball programs, organizing pep assemblies, making pictures for the frames, painting signs, and decorating for banquets. In order to try out, girls must be juniors or seniors and maintain a C average. Reserves include freshmen and sophomores. This tremendous task of producing a yearbook requires the aid and assistance of several well equipped staffs. The editorial staff actually laid out the book and wrote the copy. The art staff helped also on lay-outs. The ad staff sold advertising to support the book. The members of the business staff actually sold the book and pages of the book to various school organizations. The assembling of a yearbook takes many long hours and a lot of thinking to come up with new ideas. The editor, the staff heads, and the staff members are all to be commended for the time and effort they devoted to producing this fine yearbook. The Osky Wow gives students, and especially seniors, a journal to keep, a book containing pictures of friends and events, something that is full of the many fond memories that accompany a school year. They started out the year by making name cards for the teachers in order to establish a better relationship between instructor and pupil. The next project was Homecoming. The council planned every detail from electing the queen weeks before, until the last dance was through that evening. During Christmastime, the troup paid a visit to Hope Haven and put on a skit for them while A. J. Stockmeister, playing Saint Nick, passed out presents. Their last project for the year was the Clean-Up Campaign which really helped to brighten the schoolgrounds. She, along with vice president Lynn Chapman, secretary Jenny DeStephen, and treasurer Laraine Davis, have all worked very hard to help the Ironmen with their victories. Pep Club is an important organization, one through which students can express their pride in their team, their school, and themselves. It was their spirit and enthusiasm which made any competition worthwhile. Students show enthusiasm at pep assembly. 60 F.H.A. ROW 1 (back to front, sitting): A. Rheinhart, E. Hoops, L. Merricks, R. F.F.A In the past year, the Jackson Chapter of Future Farmers of America has been busy in carrying on their many activities. They have held an annual parent-son banquet and they hosted an English exchange student, who, by the way, gave very interesting talks to many JHS students. The president, Bob Fulton, along with the advisor, Mr. Needs, attended a state legislative breakfast while many members found new ideas at the FFA officers' training school held in the Alexander High School. The Jackson Future Farmers have attended both the District 14 Future Farmers of America banquet in Shehandoah High School and the state convention at the Ohio State Fair Grounds. From the Jackson Chapter, we have one state officer, Steve Needs, South-East Sectional Vice-President, and one district officer, Chuck Brown, District 14 Vice-President. The theme of this years event was Daisy Doin's and the auditorium was covered with daisies. Hitchin Harry featured three different prices of weddings and when business got bad, Injun Joe and his shotgun recruited couples to the altar. The high point of the evening was when Kevin Rice was crowned Lil'L Abner of 1969 by Alice Smith. When asked to say a few words to the audience, Kevin replied, a few words. Thus ended a fun-filled evening for all. Kevin Rice accepts daisies as Lil Abner. Hitchin' Harry recruiting victims. You're hitched now, Gill. Harry's Hitchin' Post. The Marching Band began its long hours of rehearsal in August preparing for the upcoming football season which required much perfection in the flash and excitement generated by the precision drill shows. The band accompanied the football squad at all games, both home and away. Our band has never disappointed the fans and community due to inclement weather. The band always performs. Parade participation included the Apple Festival Parade, The Parade of the Hills in Nelsonville, River Days Parade in Portsmouth, the Christmas Parade in Jackson, and other appearances such as the dedication of the Airport and Memorial Day services. The band also performs at all school functions with various ensembles for each occasion. Also, many students participate in The OMEA Solo and Ensemble Contest held in Athens and receive very high ratings. The Orchestra was said to be the most professional sounding orchestra that has played for the musicals. Much of the success of Brigadoon can be attributed to the orchestra. The splendid attitude and dedication of the band members is certainly evident in their performances. The Junior, Cadet, and Senior Bands give two concerts yearly and capacity crowds fill the auditorium. The Jackson High School Drama Department presented the dramatic production Prince of Foxes under the direction of Mr. Clarence Rice and student director Kyle Stiffler, assistant Jennifer DeStephen. Prince of Foxes is an historical drama wirtten in three acts by James Fuller, and is adapted from a novel by Samuel Shellabaryer. The play is set in the year 1500 in Renaissance Italy, a collection of bickering states ruled by petty princes. Cesare Borgia (John Cummings) is at the height of his power and plans to form a alliance with the Duchy of Ferrara through the marriage of his sister, Lucretia (Vicki Howell) to the Duke's heir. The tale is told through Aidobrandino de Guidone (Brinton Allison), ambassador of Ferrara to Borgia's court. Andrea Orsin (Mike Gillum, the male lead) one of Borgia's lieutenants goes to Citta del Monte--home of Marc Antonio Jurono (Phil Coburn) and his young flighty wife (Lin Schneider) to do some spying. Pretending to be of nobility, Andrea refuses to follow his mother's, Mona Constanza Zopp (Susan Rupert), advice wins the trust of the Juronos by rescuing the saintly Sister Lucia da Nam (Kathy Davis) from imprisonment. Falling in love with Camilla, Andrea decides to leave Borgia's service and successfully defends Citta del Monte. 82 The grave moment of revelation--problems abound, and the situation is tense. Her cousin gives Camilla some advice. 83 Brigadoon Is a Smashing Success The cast takes a well deserved standing ovation. Mr. Lundie officiates at the MacLaren-Dalrymple wedding. Brigadoon, under the direction of Mr. Clarence Rice and student director Kyle Stiffler, was a smashing success. Brigadoon is a romantic and adventurous musical-comedy written by the famous team of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe. The play is the story of two Americans, who in May of 1968 are wandering through the highlands of Scotland on a hunting expedition and find themselves lost. Tommy Albright (Mike Gillum) has come on this trip so that he will have time to think before his proposed marriage to-sophisticated New York socialite Jane Ashton (Debby Chapman). He is accompanied by his cynical friend Jeff Douglas (Brinton Allison). As the highland mist lifts at dawn, they are confronted by a small village. Stopping to ask directions, they find all the villagers of Brigadoon are out in full force for a street fair, and the celebration of the approaching marriage of Jean MacLaren (Nancy Essex) to Charlie Dalrymple (Frank Stevens). All are dressed in traditional Scots costume and sing joyfully. But all is not well in this seemingly peaceful village. Jean's rejected suitor, Harry Beaton (Don Duffy), is very discontented and refuses to accept the good advice of his father Archie (Steve Mitchell) and Mr. MacLaren (John Cummings) to woo the girl who loves him, Maggie Anderson (Connie Gallant). Also unhappy is Jean's older sister Fiona (Patty Jenkins), who has no man yet, but is still Waitin' For My Dearie . Tommy and Jeff are tumbled into the midst of this situation. The villagers appear strange to the modern Americans, and they do not know anything about modern inventions. Nevertheless, Tommy and Fiona become immediately attracted to one another, and leave to gather The Heather on the Hill for the wedding. Jeff, in the meantime, is caught in the toils of man-crazy Meg Brockie (Mary Savey). Fiona and Tommy return to her home convinced from the morning they have spent together that It's Almost Like Being In Love . Finding some very odd names and inconsistent dates in the family Bible, Tommy and Jeff determine to discover the mystery of Brigadoon. Fiona agrees they deserve an explanation and takes them to see the schoolmaster, Mr. Lundie (Phil Coburn). Mr. Lundie explains that Brigadoon is an enchanted village. Two hundred years before, Scotland was plagued by witches. The minister of the Brigadoon church determined to save his village from these evil creatures, and so he prayed to God for a miracle. The miracle was granted--Brigadoon will live on forever as it is, but it will only live one day of every one hundred years. Each night when the villagers go to sleep, a hundred years will pass, and the next morning they wake up in a new century. In this way, Brigadoon will never be disturbed by the outside world. Furthermore, no one born in Brigadoon may ever leave--for that will break the miracle--but an outsider who sincerely loves a person of Brigadoon may stay. As Tommy and Jeff think over the story, the wedding of Jean and Charlie takes place. As the townspeople perform the wedding dance, Harry Beaton breaks away from them all, and crying out his bitter disappointment, he determines to leave Brigadoon, and runs from the square shouting that the miracle is over! The attempt to stop Harry, and Tommy's decision about whether or not he loves Fiona enough to stay with her, forever separated from the world with which he is familiar, form the exciting conclusion to Brigadoon . 84 85 Archie addresses the colorful Brigadoon townsfolk. Harry dances the traditional Scottish folk dance. School Board James J. Savey, John Wilson, Charles Tabor, Myron Davis, and E. K. Peters. Cafeteria Cooks 94 '69 Seniors 95 TOP TO BOTTOM--Cary Brown, Vice-President; Barry Schaffer, President; Mike Gillum, Treasurer; Lyla Pittenger, Secretary. Seniors Vivacious, intelligent, congenial, and lazy is this year's senior class. Leading this wonderful group this year is Barry Schaffer, senior class president. Assisting him are Cary Brown, vice-president; Lyla Pittenger, secretary; Mike Gillum, treasurer. Seniors of 1969 excel in all fields of endeavor-sports, music, plays, academics, and extracurricular club activities. Continuing the care of an adopted Korean child is only one of many senior class projects. To raise money the seniors had a delightful booth at the Apple Festival in which they sold refreshing apple cider and apples. They also presented the spring play Brigadoon. Spurred on by a fervor of spirit, many clever pep assemblies and inspiring signs were produced by the class of 1969. To close the year and to leave its final mark, the senior class, with the assistance of the class advisor, Mr. Robert Bevins, staged a talented, witty, and comical senior assembly on May 29. Attending the last school functions, fighting the college entrance examinations, seeing the last football games, and finally hearing one's name called to receive his diploma is all a part of that marvelous, frantic, never-to-be-forgotten time of one's life--the senior year. 96 Nita Addis Mary Akers Sherry Adams Brinton Allison Carla Bethel Roy Blackburn Shirley Blair Joan Boggs Cindy Bloss Babette Bower Melody Brannan Janie Buchanan Linda Burton Cary Brown David Butts Robin Byers Mark Carlisle Roger Channel Kay Crabtree Teresa Crabtree Kathy Davis Laraine Davis Robert Davis Linda Davis Ray DeStephen Kathy Dixon Kathy Dawson Janet Donaldson Sharon Dunn Nancy Essex Joe Evans Pamela Exline Peggy Farrar Beverly Foughty Robert Fulton Donna Frazier Arlis French Sandy Gahm Constance Gallant Mike Gillum Ken Glasgow Brenda Graham Helen Graham nm Kay Graham l Steve Grant Paul Green Julia Griffiths John Haley Barbara Grow Pam Hammond Linda Grow Judy Hanauer Bill Harris Brenda Hatfield Bob Humphreys Marilyn Hatten Hattie Henderson Ron Hatten Steve Humphrey Jerry Hutchison Vicki Howell Becky Hughes Kerry Hodge Helen Me Cumber Hatten Ted Haynes Margie Hunt Senior Class Song “I Gotta Be Me Mark Hutchison Gloria Israel Patty Jenkins Morgan Jones Judy Johnson Jeanne Jones John Jones Cleo Jordan Linda Jordan Sandy Keesee Rodney Kirtley Don Lanhart Carolyn McCormick Pat McCormick Jerry Mapes Ed McCarty Sherry Markham Marshall Meredith Becky Michael Tony Mills Faythe Mitchell Steve Mitchell David Molihan Margaret Montgomery James Moore Betty Morris Jerry Mossbarger Gary Murray Mary Osborne Ken Phillips Lee Peters Virginia Ragland Patty Perry Lyla Pittenger Becky Rainer Kevin Rice Robert Rice Senior Class Colors Burgundy and Pink Mark Rose Tom Ryster Mary Savey Norma Scott Louella Surlock Diane Sellers Barry Shaffer Don She ward Jane Shields Jean Shields Jeff Sinclair Clifford Sickles Karen Sickles Oscar Skaggs Rebecca Smalley Clifford Smith Debbie Smith Ellen Smith Donna Spriggs Nancy Sparks Phil Spence Debra Sprouse Mary Stapleton Steve Stapleton Kyle Stiffler Marion Stiles Janise Stockmeister Janet Swaney Larry Taylor Phyllis Tomlin Robert Valentine Tom Thompson Richard Triplett Blair Tiffany Tami Turner Mary Jane Vititoe Judy Waddington Senior Class Flower Red Rose Roger Weese Benny Watts Leonard Webb Cindy White Kathy Ward Kathy Webb Linda Webb Robert Walker Brenda Webb Pam Wilson John Wood Janet Woosley Jim Yates Peggy Yinger Bernadette Zavora Mona Zinn 113 Left to Right--Don Wallace, Treasurer; Mike Eisnaugle, Vice-President; Peggy Speakman, Secretary; Chuck Brown, President. Juniors This year's Juniors, the future, fun-loving, care-free class of '70, numbering about 250, have been very active in school life and have proved themselves to be talented, creative, and athletic, among other things. They have been given responsibilities and have handled them well. Among these are roles in both plays, seats in the orchestra, and winning projects in the Science Fair. Two will become editors of the school yearbook and of the school newspaper and many will be staff heads and members. A few have excelled in their particular sport. Also, perhaps their biggest responsibility is planning and decorating for the Jr.-Sr. Prom and banquet. We are confident that they will continue to excel in their undertakings and will be able to fill the shoes of the Class of '69. Best of luck to the future Seniors! 114 L. Albert E. Anderson V. Ask any upperclassman, teacher, or faculty member what they think of the eighth grade class and they say it is a fine addition to the Junior High division of JHS. Even though that year, 1973, seems far in the future, we all know that the eighth graders will make those four years very meaningful and successful years in their lives.
