THE OSKY-WOW STAFF SAYS....................................... The school year 1953-1954 has been a busy one for the staff as well as every student of Jackson In athletics, as well as otherfields of endeavor, Jackson High School has won many coveted honors. Individual Jackson students have taken their places among the outstanding students of the state. The entire year has been filled with activities that have made school life a pleasant, well-rounded experience. Through all the days and weeks on a crowded calendar of events,.the Osky-Wow, through its staff and photographers, have sought to record the school year in as complete a manner as possible. From the first football practice to the Junior-Senior the flash of our photographers bulbs were a part of every possible program. As each picture came from the developer, an attempt was made to classify it in the hope that more and more people, old and young, large and small, might fit a tiny niche on some page of our annual. Of course, like all best plans of mice and men, things went Oft awry and delays have made us late. Even our little iron-man artist couldn't quite finish his work, as you can see. But, with a firm reliance on the assistance of everyone, we finally made it. The entire staff hopes that you will enjoy this pictorial record of the year. To the graduating class of 1954, the staff of the Osky-Wow is pleased to say, ‘‘This was your life! We of the Osky Wow Staff are proud to present this 1954 edition of the Osky Wow to all the students. Many long hours of work have been put toward making this book a lasting memento of his school year of 1953-54. We are proud of his book, and we hope you will be |ust as proud to keep it for years to come. Congratulations to the staff, and Editor Sandy Keairns. MEMORIES This is the picture of a team. It is a picture of champions and their trophies! This is a picture of victory! It is a picture that will always live in the hearts of all of us who prayed and hoped and wished for success! This is the picture of every man on the 1953 Championship Squad. We couldn't have done anything this year, however, without the capable leadership of our advisor, Miss Mary Lucas. With her guidance our Junior Play became a smash hit, and the Junior-Senior Dance was a big success. Juniors participated in every school activity this year and set a record for classes of Juniors to come in athletic participation. The Junior Class also presented an assembly program and a chapel program. As a final touch to a wonderful year, the Jackson High School Chapter of the National Honor Society invested a large number of Juniors into its membership Tom Jenkins is president of our Junior Class; Janet Krumm, vice-president; Jim Green, secretary; and Ruth Washabaugh, treasurer. - N Janet Gatewood Janice McGinnis Max Stout 'rQ Dallas Warner Don McLaughlin Ruth Yeager Bob Gallagher C of° Po«ers0° Lois Owens °e Ski a9Qs Glenna McNeer Loretta Swain Darlene Colby 5fT | - 9 _ r“' A r • V it- ? • J •• V y ny . - Jjp - l« ,-fP  . jKfc. 5 jAjrViji • , c- Jlw • fCy p. ;J7 -v 'av3 r . 7 v - 't-5 4 T S3 _ jagr0® • fc ySQCBSSi J V -35 YV v $■ • •■ f. ; '• - •. • . 1- ■ C. icJ • _ -r % 5' $« o V L •S' r ■ ?: :' • ft 0.1«-, 1? . ml; V, . «• Li i. • V • ' , , w v . Mr. Thornton is the capable principal and counselor of every student at Jackson High School as he helps us with our schedules and many other things. Another familar face in the office is that of Mr. Daugherty, the superintendent of Jackson High School. He has the problem of making the whole school system run smoothly. Have you ever walked into the office of J.H.S.? Any time of the day Anno Nail, secretary to Mr Daugherty, and Carol Johnson, secretary to Mr Thornton, can be seen as busy as bees. Just think of all the things they have to do: writing absence slips, typing, filing, making out schedules and answering many questions from inquisitive students. When you go into the office wth a problem, you can be sure the problem wll be solved before you leave. We want them to know that we are truly grateful to them for what they have done for us. They help our school to better itself in many ways. Miss Johnson ARZELLA BAKER Attended Rio Grande, Ohio State Ohio University - Received A.B. M. A. - Teaches English, Spanish -Hobby Painting C. No longer are we the verdant young Freshmen of 53 but the gay young Sophomores of '54. We have come a long way since our Freshman year. Not only are we ready to accept responsibilities but we are looking forward to a great future. However, we couldn't have come this far without the capable supervision of our class advisor, Miss Grimes. She has helped us with many problems; our class party, which was a big success; and many other events. We have participated in all types of school activities including assembles, chapel services, and athletics. We elcted as our class officers: Larry Claxon, President; Bill Steele, Vice President; Jennie Mapes, Secretary; and Jerry Walke, Treasurer. With them we are trying to set a good example for the coming Sophomores. We are working and studying to prepare ourselves for the years to come We are looking forward to a Junior year full of many new activities and experiences. We are the largest Freshman class ever registered in J.H.S. and we are proud of this honor. This year we have a chance in many activities these are the Glee Clubs, F.H.A., F.F.A , High School sports. OskyWow and Skeleton staffs Among our activities is the Freshman Party and assembly. With the help of Mrs. Juanita Davis and Mr. Russell Jones we enjoyed putting on the assembly and we had a grand time at our party. The Freshman officers are John Rhodes, president, John Casey, Vice president, Laverne Masters, secretary, and Martha Neal, treasurer. You sure did a swell job kids. We were proud to have our Freshman candidate, Carolyn Morrison, selected as queen of the Skeleton Ball. The ball was a big success and everyone had fun. We have all enjoyed our first year in high school and hope to have even an even better one next year when we become Sophomores. 1 P 1 n r. • n i £ ' ' 1 r-i f® - N .1 ■% f m ' - . . r C I ■ ' Cl A k 1. 2. Mr. Hissom came here from St. Mary's, West Virginia. He has been with us this school year, making the bands very successful. As a member of the band, much pleasure is derived from the trips that the band takes out of town, some of which are: football games, the annual Circleville Pumpkin Show etc. The spring concert is known to all as one of the highlights of the season. ■■■■■■ As members of J.H.S., we think of our bands as being a great asset to our school. When a student is a member of the band, he belongs to one of the best organizations in the school. This has been proved by the large participation shown by our students. There are approximately sixty-five members in the Cadet Band and one hundred and eighteen in the high school band which includes twenty-two seniors. The officers of the band this year are: President, Tom Swaim; Vice-President, Fielding Massie; Secretary, Katy Goodwin; Treasurer, Lewis Davis. The members of the band council are: Nancy Harless, Mary Ann Jarrell, Bob Miller, and Arthur Stevenson. The senior members are: Bill Bruce, Judy Hurst, Vivian Leedy, Art Stevenson, Shirley Vititoe, Marilyn Eubanks, Nancy McGuffey, Joan Carlisle, Shirlee Smith, Diane Serrott, Mary Albert, Shirley Leonard, Kathryn Leonard Charles Neal Tom Swaim Fielding Massie, Ben Rowland, Bob Rowland, Eddie Woolum, Newell Rhoades, Rinalee Eisnaugle, and In addition to the Senior Band, J.H.S. is also proud of the Cadet Band, which consists of the 7th and 8th graders. The Cadet Band is under the instruction of Mr. James Hissom. In addition to playing for home football games, they also accompanied the Senior Band to Gallipolis and played with several other bands during the Apple Festival. They have done a wonderful job and I am sure you will all a-gree that we students, owe Mr. Hissom and his hardworking band a vote of gratitude. Bill Dunn The other half of the ‘‘one-two'' punch! The man with the shiny black boots and the smoothly weaving, twisting, twirl. Bill Dunn. With all the finesse of a champion, Bill has proved that two good men are better than one good man. Coupled with Louie and a bevy of majorettes, Bill has been that extra something that other bands just don’t have. When Bill opens up during a half time show, his dextrous hands and fingers make his job look so easy that even dads try twirling the rake handle as they duck their raking chores. Jackson's Band and Jackson High School are proud of their two-man twirling team. Lewis Earl Davis The 1953-1954 Jackson High School Senior Marching Band was ably led by strutting Louie Earl whose baton has been a part of Jackson's Bands for the past several years. Graduating from the Cadet Band and then quickly filling the boots of the previous Drum Major, ‘‘Louie and his spectacular twirling have become a popular feature of every half-time program during the football season. As part of the one-two Davis and Dunn punch, every Jackson Heart swells with pride when the silver flash of a whirling baton and the rhythmic toss of Louie's white shako herald the coming of the Big Red Team. Rinolee Eisnaugle No band is complete without majorettes. This year for the first time for a while, there were 8 of them. Dressed in their new uniforms, they certainly did add to the beauty of the band. Shirley Vititoe, Judy Hurst, and Rinalee Eisnaugle are the senior members of the majorette squad. Nina Davis Becky Lego Marilyn Davis Katy Goodwin There ore about 425 students in all the different sections of the Jackson High School Glee Club. The glee club gives an annual concert which was held on February 17 with about 225 students participating. The glee clubs hove on annual formal dance in the spring to which all members and their guests are welcome. The other activities of the glee clubs ore the Christmas carol sing and the Eisteddfod. The eisteddfod is an event in which boys and girls sing solos, mixed duets, mixed quartets and play piano solos. The glee club is directed by Mr. D. Merrill Davis and is a worthwhile club for all those who enpy singing. ACCOMPANISTS ; SENIOR CITIZENS Each year, from the graduating class of Jackson High, there are chosen two people, a boy and a girl, who best exemplify the characteristics of good citizenship, both within school and without. Nominated by their senior classmates, this year, were Roy Goodwin and Linda Callahan. Balloting by the entire student body confirmed their choice. Roy and Linda represent the type of character, personality and citizen that every student in Jackson High School hopes to become. W. Dillenger D. Stewart D. Buckley A. Stevenson E. Woolum B. F. H.A. The F.H.A. is an organization for the girls of J.H.S. who take home economics or who have taken it for a year or more. Two times a year there are district meetings held at the different schools which have an F.H.A. organization in this district. These meeings are held in the fall and the spring. This year the fall meeting was held at Racine and the spring meeting at Za-laski. This year the F.H.A. sponsored a Sweetheart Dance which was held February 13 at J.H.S. They hold their meetings the second Monday in each ! month. The girls hold an installation service each year for the officers. There is an officer elected from each school every year at the district meeting. This year Jackson was asked to elect a president. Joy Masters was elected to the office. For the coming year a song leader will be elected from the J.H.S. Chapter of F.H.A. The girls' leader is Mrs. George McGuffey. Mrs. McGuffey is a new teacher this year in our school and the girls enjoy her leadership immensely. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA The Jackson Chapter of the Future Farmers of America was organized here last year. There are forty boys in this organization. They hold their meetings in the new Vocational Agriculture Building the second Tuesday of every month. The boys have a special assignment each month. Some of these things are sponsoring two square dances, sponsoring a float in the Apple Festival, a booth at the Jackson County Fair, organizing a basketball team, taking part in assemblies holding father-and-son and parent-and-son banquets, and going to F.F.A. camps. One of their main jobs this year was to paint the mail boxes of the Jackson Rural District, silver. This year in the district parlimentary procedure contest, the Jackson Chapter team placed second in a field of eight contestants. President..........................Dick Erwin Vice President.....................Dean Flaker The boys' motto is: Secretary............................Jim Casey Learning to do, Treasurer.............................Ed Finley Doing to learn, Reporter.........................Jim Reynolds Earning to live, Sentinel............................Bill Henry Living to serve. Advisor.............................Ivor Jones This year a very cute girl has been named the Duchess of Jackson High School. Norma Freeland is one of the nicest girls we have in our school. She's always ready to render help in any way she can. She has lots of friends and is well-liked by the entire student body. Her heart interest is our Duke of 1954, Allen Roark. For over a year now they have been keeping steady company. Both are popular with their teachers and other pupils alike. Norma is only 5' 1 with shoulder-length brunette hair. She is very becoming with her friendly, good-natured smile. Norma has been a member of the Tri-Hi-Y Club for two years. She is a better than average student. During this last year she was also crowned Homecoming Queen. She's been a member of the Glee Club for four years. She was in the Senior Play. At the present time she is working part-time at the dime store and as receptionist in a local doctor's office. She is enrolling in the Holzer Hospital of Nursing in Gallipolis, Ohio after she graduates. Don't you think she’ll make a cute nurse? Allen Roark, our Duke of 1954, is also president of our senior class. Allen moved to Jackson when he was a sophomore Since then he has become well-known and admired by everyone. For two years he has been running the projector in various classes. During the football season, Allen followed the games making movies of them. Of course, he feels about Norma the same as she feels about him-gone. Allen is about 5'8 with blond curly hair. He was in the junior and the senior plays. Gossip has it that he wants to go on to school to study to be a doctor. We think he d make a good one with his interest in chemistry. -t Perhaps two of the most important groups at Jackson High School are the janitors and the stage managers. We would have o very hard time getting along without either one of them. The janitors see to it that we have heat when we need it, clean rooms every day, empty waste paper baskets, and many other things. The stage managers are in charge of putting up and taking down the scenery, setting up the microphones, pulling the curtains, and other small, but important, jobs. I think both groups should be complimented on the fine job they have done this year. A TRIBUTE TO OUR ADVERTISERS..................................... We, of the Osky-Wow advertising staff, realize that yearbook advertising may seem of doubtful value to those who look upon advertising as a means of advertising a product for sale.To our advertisers, however, we wish to show you what your advertisement really means in terms of goodwill and true public service. You have made possible the only pictorial record of our school life that many of us will ever have! You have given us an opportunity to develop any talents we may have in selling, art work and writing. You have renewed our faith in the fact that grown-ups are really interested in us and in our lives. You have proved that you can see the future and that you see a place in it for us and for our dreams. We sincerely thank you for your help and encouragement. We hope that we, too, may some day do what you have done and that by your example we, likewise, will encourage other youngsters in the years to come.
