During high school he undergoes many victories and defeats in both classroom and the athletic field. The defeats taste bitter and are long remembered. Victory is sweet. It always leaves a lingering taste in your mouth for which every man yearns. Victory! Victory is wonderful feeling. Almost the same sort of feeling that you get when you have done something good for someone. A feeling that cannot be put into words. A feeling that is worth working for. A feeling that we had when we finished this yearbook. We hope you will enjoy this yearbook of pictures of yourself and your friends. Our theme is The Train of Education . A train that runs on a track that is represented by the faculty, as a strong foundation that keeps the heavy train on the right path to learning. The Seniors are the locomotive that keep the train moving while the Juniors, as the coal car, refuels the locomotive. The Sophomores, with their crane, are ready to give the Seniors and Juniors a lift when there is any trouble. It is followed by the Freshmen, as the caboose, with their red lantern to warn of any danger, and to give signals to the locomotive. Close on the heels of The Train of Education comes the Junior High represented by a handcar quickly catching up to the main train. Someday the handcar will take the upper classmen's place. And thus, The Train of Education rolls down the endless track into the future. 5 Dispatcher MR. DAUGHERTY. DISPATCHER Superintendent of Schools. Mr. Kermit Daugherty, is an important cog in the workings of all the education trains in the city of Jackson. Without his direction there would be many mix-ups in the education system. A native of Jackson County, he earned his A. B. at Rio Grande College and his M. A. at Ohio State University. He has completed additional work at Kent State University and at Ohio University. His broad experience and training make him a fine administrator. Anna Nail, who is Mr. Daugherty's secretary, is a very important part of the school office. She does her job very effectively. Trainmaster i MR. MELBRA THORNTON. TRAINMASTER Mr. Melbra Thornton. Principal of Jackson High School, has charge of directing the movements of the faculty and student body. There is no man with as many worries as the principal, the trainmaster. Mr. Thornton graduated from Cadmus High School in Gallia County. He received his A. B. from Rio Grande College. Later, in 1933. he received his M A. from Ohio State University. He has proved himself a great educator and friend of the students. Carol Jean Johnson, who is Mr. Thornton's secretary, types tests, and plans schedules throughout the school year and summer. She always has a pleasant smile and greeting when you enter the office. 7 ARZELLA BAKER Attended—Rio Grande. Ohio State, Ohio University. Received—A. B., M. A. Teaches—English. Music and script were from the original Broadway production Annie Get Your Gun by Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers, and Oscar Hammerstein II. Annie Oakley, played our own Mary Esther Gordon, a shy awkward little girl from Darke County, Ohio, who tries throughout the whole play to dazzle Frank Butler, the tall, broad-shouldered, and completely handsome champion sharpshooter of the world. Frank Butler is played very capably by Rodney Warner. Frank and Annie have a shooting match in Cincinnati in which Annie defeats Frank and makes Frank notice her for the first time. The play progresses with trouble brewing between the two rival Wild West Shows of Buffalo Bill and Pawnee Bill. Buffalo Bill, who is in financial trouble needs something new to catch the public's fancy. They decided to give Annie a spectacular stunt—to make her a star. Poor, unsophisticated Annie thinks Frank will be surprised and delighted. Instead he is outraged. He feels she has tricked him. In the midth of the congratulations and excitement, a letter arrives from Frank. He is leaving the show and is joining Pawnee Bill's Wild West Show. Both Annie and Frank are miserable at the separation, and their separate shows are both having financial troubles. Other members of the troupe try to get them back together again. Everything seems to be going wonderfully, when the old argument bursts out once again—which is the best shot. Charlie Davenport, Buffalo Bill's Manager, arranges a shooting match for the two. Chief Sitting Bull, realizing that if Annie wins the match she'll lose Frank, tells Annie you can't get a man with a gun. Annie, finally realizing this, loses the match and wins Frank in return. Another added attraction was the chorus girls who performed several times between the scenes. The play was under the capable direction of Miss Clara Leasure. Hats off to the cast and director for a wonderful performance. ANNIE GET YOUR GUN CAST 29 ANNIE OAKLEY ......... FRANK BUTLER ......... BUFFALO BILL ......... That was the day that we presented our Junior Play. The play chosen this year was Our Miss Brooks . This story was adapted from the radio series of the same name. The part of Miss Brooks was played by Linda Callhan, who did a wonderful job along with the rest of the cast. It seemed to have a knack for getting into trouble. She spent her time getting out of one mess only to wind up in another jam. Her pupils, principal, and fellow teachers all seemed to add to her picture of trouble. Her job of putting on a class play was always interrupted by some students' questions, the teachers threats, or the coach who seemed to be the sweetest to her. Congratulations to the cast and directors for a fine job. CAST MISS BROOKS MISS FINCH HUGO LONGACRE MR.
